Step Aside, Pops
Step Aside, Pops: A Hark! A Vagrant Collection | Kate Beaton
The New York Times bestseller, featured on the Washington Post best of 2015 list!Somewhere in my heart is a folder titled Things I Did Not Know I Wanted and it is full of Kate Beaton comics... Sharp, charming, and weird, Step Aside, Pops is a fine sampling of Beaton's work, and I can't recommend it enough. NPRNobodys ever gotten so much comedy out of omitting punctuation. New York TimesIda B. Wells, the Black Prince, and Benito Jurez burst off the pages of Step Aside, Pops: A Hark! A Vagrant Collection, armed with modern-sounding quips and amusingly on-point repartee. Kate Beaton's second D+Q book brings her hysterically funny gaze to bear on these and even more historical, literary, and contemporary figures. Irreverently funny and carefully researched, no target is safe from Beaton's incisive wit in these satirical strips. Beaton began her infectiously popular web comic, Hark! A Vagrant, in 2007 and it quickly attracted the adoration of hundreds of thousands of fans. It was an unequivocal hit with critics and fans alike, topping best-of-the-year lists from E!, Amazon, Time, and more. Now Beaton returns with a refined pen, ready to make jokes at the expense of hunks, army generals, scientists, and Canadians in equal measure. With a few carefully placed lines, she captures the over-the-top evil of the straw feminists in the closet, the disgruntled dismay of Heathcliff, and Wonder Woman's all-conquering ennui. Step Aside, Pops is sure to be the comedic hit of the year: sharp, insightful, and very funny.

I forgot how much I loved Kate Beaton‘s comics! This was an absolutely delightful collection that made me giggle and also immediately google a few of the historical figures I didn‘t recognize. If you like history, literature, and pop culture jokes you have to check these comics out! Pictured above are two of my fave strips from her “Femme Fatale” section.

Rereading some Kate Beaton this morning. I don‘t always get it, but I have a hunch that if you read through her stuff and looked up the references you didn‘t understand, you‘d end up will a decent education in the humanities by the end.

Clwojick @TricksyTails Thanks so much! I'm excited you like my posts, I tend to post A LOT of pictures📚😂☺️ let me know if you have any recommendations. I'm always looking for more graphic novels to read.... though I mostly only get them at the library seeing as how I fly thru them so quickly, and I hardly ever do re-reads. 6y
TricksyTails I mostly get them through the library as well and only purchase ones I'll likely reread. Unfortunately, I've recently moved to an area with a very sad library. So, I'm living vicariously through your posts! 😆 I'll keep scrolling through your posts and see if there's anything I can recommend that you haven't read yet. 6y
Clwojick @TricksyTails I have a main library less than a five min walk from my work, so I'm there atleast three times a week, but I can't wait until next Friday! I think I'm going to spend the day the the library across town. I have to go to take some pics for wedding planning purposes because we're getting married there next sept, but They have a MASSIVE selection of graphic novels, so I'm pretty pumped! 6y
TricksyTails 😍 You are soooooo lucky! I wish I could walk to the library. A GOOD library. I'd never be home. Spam your posts with all the goodies you find next Friday! You're getting married at the library? How wonderful!! Congratulations! So many good things happening. ☺️ 6y

Often on Saturdays my husband does math tutoring in a library across town from the one I frequent. Unexpectedly got off of work and decided to join him and check out the graphic novel section. Hopefully I can get through one or two of these before we leave, but now I'm fully stocked for our rainy weekend! #bookhaul
