I wanted to love this book, but it just felt very flat in its storyline. Perhaps it was because I was listening to the audio version, which I do only here and there, but it just lacked the thrill I was expecting. Some points were exciting, and I enjoyed the different characters in Emmanuelle‘s village, but it just wasn‘t what I was hoping it would be!

I started this book and it hooks you right away but I paused and now feel unsure about the wisdom of immersing myself in a village where there is widespread deprivation and psychological gloom...too much, at this moment.
Maybe next week when the smoke clears! His writing is GOOOOOORGEOUS and so spare. Sharp.
pickThis was a different story of WW2 for me. Set in a French village, it dealt with the troubles of ordinary people and how they endured. Very moving portrayal of the liberation and the sacrifices made by the Allied forces. Very good! 🤓

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 Emma is a talented baker in a small village in France during the occupation. She discovers ways to help feed the people of her village and to resist and fight back against the enemy. Emma is plucky and brave but she doesn't believe the Allies will ever come and free them or that God still lives them. Then one day in June that all changes. A good WW11 read.
pickI would rank this between a pick and so-so. The first half of the book was wonderful and unique about Emma, a young baker in France in 1944 who bakes bread for the occupying troops and manages to also make bread to sustain her neighbors. Halfway through the book it started to feel like the same thing over and over. However, I kept reading because I really was invested in Emma and what happens to her.
Spending some time at a local coffee shop and trying to get some reading in today. Hope everyone is having a great Monday! 💜

Kiernan does an admirable job fictionalizing a small French community in the lead-up to D-Day. Emma is forced to bake baguettes daily for German soldiers while becoming a silent resistor of Nazi occupation.

The protagonist, Emmanuelle is a baker in a small French village during WW2, and the story follows her trying to keep her fellow villagers fed and alive during the German occupation of her town. pickSetting is World War 2 Occupied France so you know it's going to be sad. I made sure not to read it before bed. Didn't want those visions in my head while trying to sleep. Emma is such a strong young woman. Smart and Resourceful. I would have liked an epilogue. Would have been nice to know the effects of her experience on rest of her life.

pickWhat an amazing book. This is one of those books that makes me want to meet the author and say thank you. The main character is a fully formed human being - she has flaws, she has hope, she despairs... Such a lovely thing, this book.
I'm so glad I read Last Hope Island just before this book. I have a much, much deeper understanding of the occupation of France and the relationship between the Resistance and the Allies.
Picked this up at the Goodwill store for $1.87!!

pickThis book was beautiful and heart breaking and hopeful and just lovely. Kieran did an amazing job bringing the story of Emmanuel and her village during the Nazi occupation of France to life. Another great WWII era read. My reading buddies were right long side me as I finished this one up today.
