How big is a crocodile? What about a tiger, or the worlds largest spider? Can you imagine a tongue that is two feet long or an eye thats bigger than your head? Sometimes facts and figures dont tell the whole story. Sometimes you need to see things for yourselfat their actual size.

This NF picture book by Steve Jenkins is great for RA, students can learn information about these types of animals on the pages and the illustrations make you see their actual sizes! I love how exact measurements is displayed as well. It would definitely be fun to read and engage students. #ucflae3414f19

This NF this a fun picture book to share with the class in a RA. The fun facts about animals and how big or small they are will build the interest of young readers. This would be great following up learning about animals after a science lesson on animals. For an ESOL strategy, I would sit in a small group with the students and go over the facts again for comprehension, not memorization. #ucflae3414

YesseniaN UDL principle: Promote understanding across languages (2.4)
As a classroom activity, I would suggest having the students do some research either on the computer or at a school library on an animal and have them write at least three facts and draw a picture. http://www.houghtonmifflinbooks.com/readers_guides/pdfs/JenkinsGuide.pdf

“Actual Size“ by Steve Jenkins is a book that describes many different animals large and small and everywhere in between. Every page has wonderfully colored illustrations viewing each animal in their actual size. This book is tagged as NF and would definitely entertain teachers and students alike. Students can compare the animals in this book to the animals they have personally encountered in their everyday life. #UCFLAE3414F19

Tinks I can see this being a great addition to any elementary classroom library and having this be utilized with many lesson plan activities would be educational within all subjects. Actual Size by Steve Jenkins is a great non-fiction literature book for children. This book gives information of different animals and shows the creature in its actual size! This book would be a great choose for a children read aloud. During a read aloud the teacher can go over different vocabulary words pertaining to the text and children can also relate to seeing some of these animals in the book. #ucflae3414f19

This is a great book to do a RA with your students. This book has actual size pictures of real animal parts. This book has the measurements of all the animal parts in the book. UDL strategy 3.3 could be used along with Ell strategy number 17. Students will be able to see the size with the measurements right next to the picture. #UCFLAE3414SP18

KaitlynN I love this book! I think it‘s such a cool concept to show animals at actual size in a way that kids can interact with it. I mean I wouldn‘t want a 3rd grader THAT close to a great white shark! 2y
DrSpalding Make sure you include a resource. Your writing style is enticing. Be sure to align EL strategies and UDL principles 2y

Actual Size by Steve Jenkins- Non Fiction (NF)

Fascinating book, great for student #interactions during the reading. Actual size represents various animals and their different sizes! It states exciting and interesting facts about different animals we may know of or may have seen at the zoo. The physical dimensions and names of the animals can be a fun activity for the students to participate in during and at the end of the story.

DrSpalding Be sure to use your rubric. You need one more post. Five were required by yesterday. 2y

This nonfiction picture book includes picture of animals and/or body parts in their actual size. It states facts about each animals picture. This is a great read for students that are interested in animals and it helps give students and idea of how small or large these animals are.
Although there are no awards shown on the front cover this book has won many awards including: (comments⬇️)
#UCFLAE3414SP18

kylamarie5 NCTE Orbis Pictus Non-Fiction Honor Book, Int'l Reading Assoc Children's Choices 2005, Booklist Editor's Choice Children's Book, NY Public Library 100 Titles for Sharing, and ALA Top 10 Sci-Tech Books for Youth 2004.
This is the website i found the awards on! https://www.the-best-childrens-books.org/Actual-Size-lesson.html
2y
kylamarie5 The teaching strategy that I aligned to this text is a shared reading (SR). I would read this book with my class and have them look at the pictures since the book is large enough for the class to see. After the reading i would have students would go back to their desks and do activities that go along with the book. These activities can be things like centers or independent work. The link provides more information about shared reading activities⬇️ 2y
kylamarie5 UDL: 2.1- Clarify vocabulary and symbols
2.5- Illustrate through multiple media
9.1- Promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation
EL: 12- Teach to two objectives, language and content
16- Integrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities
2y
DrSpalding Make sure your amazing resource hyperlinks. You can‘t go wrong with RWT. Nice EL/UDL alignment. Obviously this book is excellent for read aloud but can be used in many ways to incorporate literacy and math. 2y

Actual size is such a fun NF to incorporate in any classroom. It is a book that shows you the ACTUAL size of things. For example the actual size of an alligator‘s mouth or a birds beak. This book is a Orbis Pictus Honor! This would be a cool RA during a math lesson to show that learning sizes does not have to be boring. #UCFLAE3414f17

MeganMc https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.brighthubeducation.com/lesson-plans-grades-1-2/... this website brings you to a fun math lesson. The lesson teaches students how to measure things and in the activity it asks you to compare the measurements. Incorporate fun activities like this to math lessons is so so important for students. 2y
MeganMc The UDL is 1.3 offer alternatives for visual learning. This is because in the lesson it provides visual pictures and length diagrams to help students measure. The EL is 4 link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge because we are providing them with animals and objects that they are familiar with. 2y
AJones I just bought (another one of my bargain buys for $.59) and read this book. I enjoyed the author‘s attention to details. The Pygmy mouse lemur was so cute. Thanks for sharing this interdisciplinary lesson. 💖📏📖 I cannot wait to share it with my students. 2y

Actual Size by Steve Jenkins is an enormously fun NF '05 Orbis Pictus award winning SR book! Sometimes you just need to see things for yourself and this book does just that. Each turn of a page, you get colorful pictures with interesting facts and physical dimensions of each animal. Towards the end of the book, there is an illustrated index that shows the scaled-down version of each animal accompanied by even more fun-filled facts! #ucflae3414f17

JanaLL The shared reading strategy mentioned above can be used in the extension lesson: https://www.brighthubeducation.com/lesson-plans-grades-1-2/128829-2nd-grade-meas...
