This F book written and drawn by Maurice Sendak is an obvious pick for the classroom. Turned into a major motion picture and awarded the Caldecott, this text is great for RT with an advanced reader as the narrator. The whimsical story is an imaginative outlet all kids seem do enjoy. UDL 8.3 foster collaboration and community. EL 3 encourage self-talk (positive thinking) for ELL's reading the script. #ucflae3414f17

This B of Alan Rabinowitz life beautifully illustrated by Catia Chien highlights the struggles Alan had as a child communicating with a stutter. Animals were the only thing he could talk to normally and made a promise to have a voice for them some day. This story would be great for AS, especially if there are quieter students in the classroom. UDL 9.2 facilitate personal coping skills and strategies. EL #28 provide biographies of men and women

Wonder | R. J. Palacio
post image
Pickpick

I cannot say enough good things about this RF novel, Wonder, by R.J. Palacio. It's clear to see how this New York Times Best Seller is spreading like wildfire through classrooms and is coming out a major motion picture. This book can influence classroom community by making students think twice about inclusion and diversity. The most effective strategy for this book is LC so students can share on their thoughts and connections. #ucflae3414f17

farynantenucci I chose the UDL 8.3- foster collaboration and community and EL #2- promote cooperation to accompany this novel and they go well with LC. I also found this excellent classroom resource http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DuzIunuPMpI/UG9yySCreLI/AAAAAAAABBY/tnPjP0cpXto/s1600/... that allows students to create a written piece from very unique and fun prompts related to the novel. Mirette on the High Wire | Emily Arnold McCully
post image
Pickpick

Mirette on the High Wire is an excellent historical fiction choice for RA that won the distinguished Caldecott Medal in 1993. The story is about a young girl living in Paris who teaches herself how to tight rope walk and becomes the pupil of a very famous rope performer, Bellini. It's a sweet inspirational text that teaches the moral lesson of never giving up and finding a role model to look up to. #ucflae3414f17

farynantenucci https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/mirette-highwi... This website has a great activity for this book called "Who Are Our Heroes?" It takes students through listing their goals and interests, and doing a mini research project to find a hero in history that aligns with them. This works perfectly with the book as Mirette found Bellini as her hero. 7y
farynantenucci The UDL strategy I chose to go with this book is 3.1- activate or supply background knowledge. Students would benefit from this because the book takes place in Paris and has some French language in it and it would be helpful for students to review this information ahead of reading. 7y
farynantenucci The ESOL strategy I chose was #20. This ties into the UDL strategy as well because listing important words and phrases from the book before reading, that students may not be familiar with can support them through the text and keep them engaged. 7y
DrSpalding This is a wonderful book selection. Your UDL/EL strategies are spot on. This is a wonderful book to expose students to a historical time period! 7y
