Actual Size | Steve Jenkins
post image

Actual Size by Steve Jenkins is a very interesting NF book. This book gives visuals of animals that are the real sizes of them! It is interesting to see how big some animals are and also how small! The book also gives the measurements of these animals so this can be incorporated into a math lesson. UDL principle 2.3 and ESOL strategy 29 would supplement this book.

Olsonashley19 I would use this story as a PR before introducing a math measurement lesson. Attached is a lesson to go along with this book. http://www.lfpl.org/documents/actual%20size%20outline[1].doc #lae3414sp19 5mo

They say you learn something new everyday! I definitely did while reading this story and finding out it is true! This HF story by April Jones Prince and illustrated by Francois Roca tells the true story of the building of the Brooklyn Bridge and the testing of it's strength with twenty one real elephants! Use this book for a science lesson using this link! https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/paper-bridges/

Olsonashley19 Use ESOL strategy 17 and 12 and UDL principle 6.2 with this book and activity! This book will be great for a RA before the science activity! #Lae3414sp19 (edited) 5mo
giont @Olsonashley19 After seeing your post, I‘m definitely interested in this book! It‘s interesting how they used 21 elephants to test the bridge, I‘m sure children would find that interesting too. You also added a great resource on linking it to a science lesson, keeping that in my mind for the future! 5mo
DrSpalding You noted this as a favorite. I have not read this book and I am adding it to my stack. Very cool! If it is a true story, is it historical fiction or nonfiction? Many times they make minor changes… Which would make it historical. 5mo

With very few words and child like illustrations, this story is relatable to early elementary students. It is no surprise that this book received the Caldecott Award. UDL principle 3.3 and ESOL standard #17 would support this story during a RA.

My favorite childhood book!! This F story by Max Lucado and illustrated by Sergio Martinez tells the story of wooden people who are constantly judged by their peers. If they are seen as good or pretty they receive a gold star but if they are seen as lesser than others, the wooden people receive a grey dot. Punchinello ends up meeting his maker and is told that he is special no matter what the others think.

Olsonashley19 This book would be great as a DR so the students are able to see the effects of their judgements on others. This website gives guiding question for a philosophical discussion in the classroom. https://www.teachingchildrenphilosophy.org/BookModule/YouAreSpecial UDL principles 9.1 and 9.2 would help guide this discussion, along with ESOL standard #24. #LAE3414SP19 (edited) 7mo
