This RF RA picture book won 3 awards: the Cadlecott, Newberry, and Coretta Scott King award. This is a story about a boy that rides the bus with his grandma every sunday, but one Sunday, he starts to ask questions like “why dont we have a car?” And “why dont I have an IPad like my friends?”. During the bus ride, his grandmother responds with encouraging answers and shows him the fun in their routine every Sunday.

Brittanyradzak I would use UDL principle 1.3 to offer alternatives for visual information. I would also use ESOL strategy 3 to encourage self-talk. http://www.theclassroombookshelf.com/2015/03/last-stop-on-market-street/ there are so many different activities in this resource like defining beauty, focusing on imagery, and diverse characters! #ucflae3414f17 6y
MakennaK Wow! I love the pictures in this I can see why it is an award winner! I would have my students recreate the pictures! 6y
CaseyL I didn‘t know that this book won the Coretta Scott King award! I can see why though because it is an amazing picture book worthy of all of these awards! 6y

This is a RF RA Pura Belprè honor book and a great book for ESOL students. A girls grandmother comes to live with her family in the city from far away where she had parrots and palm trees. The problem is, they cannot understand each other because they speak different languages. They get to know each other‘s languages and the girl gets her Grandmother a parrot, named mango, to remind her of her home.

Brittanyradzak This would be great with UDL principle 2.4 and ESOL strategy 24 to embrace the culture and situations that ELL may have in their life. https://www.adl.org/sites/default/files/documents/assets/pdf/education-outreach/... this is a great resource that helps students explore other cultures, and it even includes an activity to learn another language! #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 6y
DrSpalding What a resource from an unlikely source. ESOL strategy 24 is just right. Several peers have read this book too. Was it highlighted in the CMC? 6y
Teresaj I would love to read this book! Definitely plan to read 6y

The One and Only Ivan is a F LCNewberry award-winning novel. This is an amazing story about a gorilla named Ivan who was so comfortable living behind glass and being watched by humans all the time. Then Ruby, an elephant who was taken from her family, comes along and changes everything for Ivan. I would use UDL principle 3.2 and ESOL strategy 2 to promote small group discussions about the critical features, big ideas, and relationships.

Brittanyradzak https://www.novelstudies.org/downloads/The_One_and_Only_Ivan_Novel_Study_Preview... wow! Such a helpful website. This resource gives you so much as a teacher. It gives the students a chance to do predictions before they read, vocab, questions, language activities, and extension activities. I would definitely implement this in my classroom! I love how it gives the authors biography too. #ucflae3414f17 7y

The Story of Ferdinand | Robert Lawson, Munro Leaf

The Story of Ferdinand is a F RA picture book written by Munro Leaf and illustrated by Robert Lawson. This is a book about a bull named Ferdinand, who would rather sit and smell the flowers than fight like everyone else. I would use UDL principle 9.3 to develop self-assessment and reflection. I would also use ESOL strategy 2 to promote cooperation. I would discuss with the students if you would be like Ferdinand or the other bulls. #ucflae3414f17

Brittanyradzak https://tc2.ca/pdf/TheStoryofFerdinand.pdf this resource gives a lesson plan that focuses on background knowledge, jumping to conclusions, and synthesizing ideas. It gives students a chance to explain how a bull “should” be and how Ferdinand is. It also has the students gives advice for the 5 men who took Ferdinand to fight. 7y
MorganH This sounds like an adorable story for any classroom! 7y
emilykwilkins This seems like a great addition to any classroom library! 7y

Where the Sidewalk Ends is a P AS book written by Shel Silverstein. I feel like everyone should have this book! Where the Sidewalk Ends is filled with heart-warming poems and drawings. Its hard to find just one UDL principle and ESOL strategy for all of the poems. I would chooseUDL principle 3.2 to highlight patterns, big ideas, and critical features. ESOL strategy 6 would be best because poems can be a little tricky to comprehend.

Brittanyradzak http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/calendar-activities/where-side... this is a readwritethink resource that gives a activity and more resources to help with his poems. http://www.shelsilverstein.com/learning/ this is a great resource that gives event kits for poetry workshops. This is a classic F RApicture bookby Esphyr Slobodkina. This is a story about a peddler selling caps and tricky monkeys. This book is a great RA I think everyone should have in their classroom library. I would use UDL principle 2.3 and ESOL strategy 30 to identify and connect with math. I would use the different colored hats to create addition and subtraction math problems. Diagrams and drawings would help to visualize the addition or subtraction.

Brittanyradzak There are so many resources for this book, i had a hard time picking just one. http://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewResourceLesson/Preview/30825 this is a lesson plan directly from CPALMS that gives to ideas about math and language concepts. This resource also includes detailed information accommodations, summative and formative assessments, and a extension activities that go along with “Caps For Sale”. #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 7y

The True Story Of The 3 Little Pigs is a TL S picture book written by Jon Scieszka. This story tells the story of the 3 little pigs, but from the wolf‘s side of the story. I would choose UDL principle 3.1 and ESOL strategy 30 to use compare and contrast between the original vs the wolf‘s story of the 3 little pigs.

Brittanyradzak https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/true-story-3-l... this website is a great resource for this book. It focuses on the different points of view, asking students to contrast the points of view between this story and the original. This resource also gives the students a chance to write to A. Wolf. Lastly, the students can act out the different stories of the 3 little pigs. #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 7y
DrSpalding Point of view and comparing/contrasting the multiple versions of the book are skills students must master to be proficient readers! Super ideas and resource! 7y

Players in Pigtails is a HF RA picture book written by Shana Corey. This book is about the rising of women‘s role in baseball during the war, and how that made a big impact on how girls were viewed back when no one thought women could play sports. I would use UDL principle 3.2 and esol strategy 50 to learn more about women‘s suffrage in America.

Brittanyradzak http://www.shanacorey.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Shana-Corey-Educators-Guide... This gives many different activities and lesson plans that would be very useful in a classroom. It gives students a chance to explore writing their own HF book. This resource provides NF questions and comprehension questions. It also gives mini lessons that highlight the alliteration and onomatopoeia‘s used. #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 7y

National Geographic Kids: Rocks and minerals is a great NF IR to have in a classroom library. Having all of the National Geographic Kids books would be an essential to my classroom library. I would use UDL principle 3.1 to try to connect with background knowledge about rocks and minerals. I would also use that background knowledge to build upon by connecting it with a lesson(ESOL strategy 4) with this book as support. #ucflae3414f17

Brittanyradzak https://educators.brainpop.com/lesson-plan/rocks-and-minerals-activities-for-kid... This resource gives really good activities that you can use in the classroom. It gives students a different perspective of rocks and minerals which are easily accessible to students. Activities focusing on learning about rocks and sediment can be done with a quick walk outside. There are many aspects of rocks that students can observe like color and texture. 7y

Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes is a great F RA picture book that everyone should have in their classroom library. Pete walks through strawberries, blueberries, mud, and water, which ruins his white shoes. But Pete keeps on walking along and singing his song because its all good! I would use UDL principle 9.3 and ESOL strategy 3 to show that things may go wrong in life but do we cry? Goodness no!

Brittanyradzak http://assets.readcommoncore.com/resources/Pete_the_Cat%20TG.pdf this is a great resource for all of the Pete the Cat books. There are many activities related to I Love My White Shoes. There is a positive thinking, moral of the story, sorting(which can be included in math), and color fun. I love Pete the Cat, and there are so many resources available for all of the books! #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 7y

Because of Winn-Dixie is a F LC Newberry Award winning novel by Kate DiCamillo. This is a heartwarming novel about a little girl who is new to Naomi, Florida who finds a stray dog and names him Winn-Dixie. Little does she know, Winn-Dixie becomes her bestfriend and teaches her so many lessons about life. I would use UDL principle 3.2 and ESOL strategy 30 to highlight relationships in the text and maybe relate them to their own.#ucflae3414f17

Brittanyradzak http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/characters-becaus... this is a great resource for “Because of Winn-Dixie” that really focuses on the characters in the story. This book is a Biography written by Mordicai Gerstein! This Caldecott award winner would be a great RA. Its about a man who is a daredevil but i guess wanted a bit more of a challenge, so he decided to careful plan walking in between the twin towers. I would use UDL principle 3.1 to give them an introduction of what the twin towers. I would also use esol strategy 29 an supply to students with different informational resources on the twin towers.

Brittanyradzak http://corkboardconnections.blogspot.com/2012/09/honoring-911-delicate-balance.h... this is a great resource that doesnt only focus on one topic. It focuses on ELA, math, science, and the topic of 9/11. It has discussion questions, compare and contrast, measurements, center of gravity, and the discussion of 9/11. I think this is an amazing resource to have with this book! #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 7y

One of my favorite books! “The Polar Express” is a Caldecott award winner and a F RAbook writtenby Chris Van Allsburg. This is about a boy who boards a mysterious train that takes him all the way to the north pole! Thisis a great RA to read near the holidays. I would use UDL principle 9.1 because it shows to stay true to what you believe in. I would also use ESOL strategy 4 to connect this story to knowledge of what they believe in. #ucflae3414f17

Brittanyradzak https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/polar-express-... this is a great resource. It gives a lesson plan of having the students write what they would want if they were him and they could choose the first gift of christmas. I would love to see how creative they would get. There are also lesson extentions of students writing their own story, but instead of santa, they use the tooth fairy, easter bunny, etc. 7y
AndreaC I love the movie and the book! This is a great story to read during Christmastime. If it‘s the week before Christmas break I think it would be fun to read the story and have the kids watch the movie as a treat! 7y

“Dont let the pigeon drive the bus” is a F RA Cadlecott award-winner. This is about a bus driver that asks you to watch his bus and not to let the pigeon drive. The rest of the book is the pigeon trying to convince the reader to let it drive. I would use UDL principle 7.1 to highlight their choices. I would also use esol strategy 2 to encourage small group discussions of why they would or wouldn‘t let the pigeon drive.

Brittanyradzak https://www.kindergartenworks.com/kindergarten-teaching-ideas/writing/dont-let-t... this is a great resource for kids to get creative. Press here is a really fun New York Times bestseller fiction RAbook by Hervé Tullet! The story is 100% interactive and really helps with folllowing directions and listening skills. I would UDL principle 8.4 because this book is mostly about listening but a big part of it is also the feedback that we can receive from it. I would use ESOL strategy 14 because this book requires alot of directions that may be difficult for the student the first time.

Brittanyradzak https://www.chroniclebooks.com/landing-pages/presshere/images/PressHereActivityS... this is an amazing resource for different problem solving and creative activities for your students! A boy finds an abandoned book about redwoods, he soon finds out about the strange things that happened when she reads the book. I would use UDL principle 2.1 andESOL strategy 5 to help with challenging vocabulary #ucflae3414f17

Brittanyradzak http://jasonchin.net/educators/educational-resources-for-redwoods/ this is a great resource from the authors website about the different activities like compare and contrast, life cycle of a tree, tree hunt, tree mural, circular stories, and fact vs fiction. Where the wild things are is a classic F RA picture book written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak. This Cadlecott award winner is a story of a boy named Max who was sent to his room and this imagination grew, and grew into a forrest where the wild things lived. The wild things loved Max, they made him their king and did everything together. The UDL guideline i would choose for this book is 1.1 and ESOL strategy 2 to promote students‘ imagination.

The book with no pictures is a F RA book and New York Times Bestseller, written by B.J. Novak. This explains how a book with no pictures can be no fun at all, until you read on. It continues with silly comments like “boo boo butt” that the reader HAS to say because thats the rule of a book! I would use UDL guideline 7.1 because this book can be a fun way for students to get creative. I would use ESOL strategy 16 to integrate their creativity.
