audrey.wilson UDL strategy 4.1, vary the methods for response and navigation, Wings jumps around with who is telling the story, it also does not follow a linear timeline, because the book is not a typical story structure I would need to implement 4.1 to help my students. ESOL 1, teach questioning for clarification, also is necessary for this book.

Kcallihan Audrey, this book sounds so so cute! I definitely want to add this to my future books to read. I think that using LC‘s is a very good idea for this book because since it is a “chapter book” I think it would help for the students to debrief in small groups! 6y

ESOL 20, list the most important words or phrases you use or plan to use in a presentation (or in this case, a unit), on a transparency or whiteboard. When teaching about the space race, many challenging words are high frequency. All students would benefit from a temporary space themed word wall. 6y

Before She was Harriet by Lesa Cline-Ransome, illustrated by James E. Ransome, received an honorary Coretta Scott King Award. This biography follows Harriet Tubman through her life, portraying all the things she was before she became Harriet from the underground railroad. This book is excellent for an RA. The illustrations in this book are quite spectacular. I will use this book for my reader's theater, and it would work either way!

The material about the underground railroad follows the book and the lesson. UDL 7.2, optimize relevance, value, and authenticity allows this book/lesson.

This story is banned from most schools in America due to its apparent “sexism” and “criminalization of the foresting industry.” The Giving Tree only has two characters, the tree, and the boy. The boy grows up and continues to visit the tree throughout his life. This book can be used for RT, and a different person can narrate the boy as he grows up. 6y

Percy Jackson: The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan (F) won 2007,” Best book for Young Adults” award. I‘m sure that no one is surprised that I choose another Rick Riordan book, but I genuinely enjoy his work. In my future classroom, I intend to read The Lightning Thief aloud to my students. However, for the second book, I would offer this as a literature circle option.

audrey.wilson To Kill a Mockingbird is a staple in American literature and can be a challenging read. I would recommend this book to be used for a literature circle. I would require all my students to read the book, but have them discuss each chapter in a literature circle to enhance comprehension. 6y

audrey.wilson If this book is used in LC after every chapter, it aligns with ESOL standard 10. ESOL 10 is teach think, pair, and chare strategies in cooperative groups. The LC also incorporate UDL 8.3, foster collaboration and community. 6y

audrey.wilson I thought that having the students partake in a mock trial (it can be about anything) would be a good way to use this book, from a civics point of view, and not a racially charged point of view. To Kill a Mockingbird is often banned from schools even though it is a crucial piece of American literature. 6y

Pink and Say | Patricia Polacco

Pink and Say by Patricia Polacco is a historical fiction picture book. Pink and Say won the 1997 West Virginia Children‘s Book award. The characters in this book are loosely based on real people who fought in the Civil War. Pink and Say are two teenage boys fighting for the Union army, and they temporarily take haven at Pink‘s mothers home. They are eventually captured and taken prisoner by the Confederate army.

audrey.wilson Pink and Say works well for a think-aloud/read aloud because the language follows a heavy African American dialect. The story provides a more significant impact when read according to the author's language use. The reason this should be a think aloud is that throughout the book there are many Civil war terms and historical events require elaboration. (edited) 6y

The reason I believe 2.4 aligns with Pink and Say is because the language use and different dialects are not typically used/heard today. It is essential students recognize the existence of dialects in languages and how to read and comprehend such dialects.

Belinda the Ballerina by Amy Young is a realistic fiction children‘s book. This book shares a valuable lesson of never giving up on your dreams. Belinda is judged by her big feet at the audition for the annual ballet recital. She almost gives up on her love for dancing after being told her feet would inhibit her from being a dancer. I would use this book for storytelling in my future classroom.

There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly by Simms Taback is a classic. This poem may register as a bit dark for aware adults, it is always deemed hilarious by children. A 1998 Caldecott Honor book, is truly captivating with its dark pages and imaginative illustrations. I would use this book as a choral reading. Poems work great for improving students fluency, it would also promote engagement amoung the class!

But with the lesson Edible Estimation, this fun poem could be a great way to indtroduce measurements, weight, and volume in science. (edited) 6y

Actual Size by Steve Jenkins is a genuinely unique picture book. Actual Size is an NF with accurate size and depictions of animal, reptiles, and insects. Since this book is NF, it applies to many grade levels and can pique the interest of almost anyone! Actual Size is a beautiful book for an RA.

audrey.wilson Actual Size could also be used for an AS; Steve Jenkins is an interesting person with many books and honors. ESOL 11, place language in meaningful context, aligns with teaching the vocabulary in this book. UDL 2.1., clarify vocabulary and symbols, also aligns well with this book. Wonder | R. J. Palacio

Wonder by R. J. Palacio is the type of book you cannot put down! I read it in one day, staying up later than I‘m proud to finish this story. Wonder won the Young Readers Choice Award and was then turned into a major motion picture. This tear-jerking RF is a story that needs to be read in every classroom across America. This book encompasses so many valuable life lessons.

audrey.wilson The most applicable to the standard classroom is “just because someone may seem or look different, it does not mean they don‘t have feelings; nor does it give anyone the right to bully or isolate anyone.”This novel could be utilized in many ways but an independent reading for older grades, 4th and up, would be my recommendation. 6y

kennedimartin @audrey.wilson I also read Wonder for my second LC and I couldn‘t put it down! I agree that you could use UDL 9.2 if a student has a personal experience with possibly a sibling who has a disability or if the student themselves is dealing with coping and understanding their own diagnosis. Thanks for sharing! 6y
