Brooklyn
Brooklyn | Colm Toibin
Colm Toibin s New York Times bestselling novel now an acclaimed film starring Saoirse Ronan and Jim Broadbent nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture is a moving, deeply satisfying read (Entertainment Weekly) about a young Irish immigrant in Brooklyn in the early 1950s. One of the most unforgettable characters in contemporary literature (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette), Eilis Lacey has come of age in small-town Ireland in the hard years following World War Two. When an Irish priest from Brooklyn offers to sponsor Eilis in America, she decides she must go, leaving her fragile mother and her charismatic sister behind. Eilis finds work in a department store on Fulton Street, and when she least expects it, finds love. Tony, who loves the Dodgers and his big Italian family, slowly wins her over with patient charm. But just as Eilis begins to fall in love, devastating news from Ireland threatens the promise of her future. Author Colm Toibin is his generation s most gifted writer of love s complicated, contradictory power (Los Angeles Times). Written with mesmerizing power and skill (The Boston Globe), Brooklyn is a triumph One of those magically quiet novels that sneak up on readers and capture their imaginations (USA TODAY)."

I forgot to post this for #ReadTheUSA2020 #NewYork after I read it. This #HistoricalFiction is about a young woman named Eilis who immigrates to Brooklyn from Ireland in the 1950s in search of work.

This was so good that I read the entire book today! The story was interesting, and I loved how well Toibin wrote it in a way that you could really understand Eilis' thoughts and feelings about leaving her family in Ireland and moving to Brooklyn for better opportunities.

I‘m perfectly content to place my comfy armchair smack-dab in the center of Times Square and read Manhattan for a full year. But In an effort to track where else I may wander (and prioritize my TBR) I‘m participating in #ReadingEurope2020 and #ReadTheUSA2020. And look! I made it to Brooklyn - and I liked it, a lot! #NewYork

Amiable What a cool photo! And I loved the book, too. 🙂 3w
marleed @Amiable Thank you!! I was taking down my Hallmark ornament Christmas Village with a mass of houses sitting on my kitchen table when it struck me that I had the backdrop for the book I was about to read! So, I also grabbed my copy of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn for a pic. Maybe that will be my incentive to finally read that one too! 3w
Amiable @marleed Oh, definitely read “Tree”! I adore that book. It was one of the books I obsessively re-read as a young girl. It validated me — Francie Nolan allowed me to understand that it was perfectly ok to love books and reading and learning for the sake of learning. I‘m not sure if it would resonate so emotionally if I read it first as an adult. But it changed my inner world as a child. 3w
See All 6 Comments
marleed @Amiable It is certainly the book I‘ve wanted to read the most for the longest time and somehow haven‘t. I even have a copy on my kindle so I‘d never be able to say it was right there for the taking. I love that it meant so much to you - you‘ve inspired me! 3w
ChasingOm I have those ornaments too! My mom used to buy me one every year. 😄 3w
marleed @ChasingOm Oh fun! My husband started working at Hallmark the year the first house came out so that seemed the appropriate to start. He‘s passed away, but except for a couple missed years when travels kept me from thinking decorations, I keep adding the newest building. I have 2 walls of bookshelves in my reading room so I line them across the top of the shelves! 3w

Why aren‘t you reading this yet? I saw the movie ages ago but going through and reading the book gave me more of Eilis‘ background. From homesickness, studying, love, and loss, Eilis discovers herself but not on her terms.

Overall good read, I have to go back and watch the movie now!

My dad passed away 20 days ago. Dad loved history, and NYC TV shows, so I think he would have loved a visit to the city. I have a small urn of his ashes, and I‘ve decided to take him on little East Coast excursions with me. I was in the wrong lane and ended up on the Brooklyn Bridge. I was annoyed at first, but then realized it was 15 minutes well spent if my dad got to experience the bridge.

Some books are a treat. This one is that kind of book: immensely beautiful and full of understanding of and compassion with its characters. The description of the MC first arrival in the US gives a great idea on how beeing an immigrant must feel. The insight in the fifties decades in NY from the female point of the MC is interesting. Overall: a joy to read. Not an heavy classic, but well worth the time.

It wasn't at all what I expected! From the promo pictures of the movie I was expecting your normal romance of "girl is torn between two guys".
It was sooo good to read a story about a *woman immigrant* trying to find a better life in America. I loved Eilis character even if sometimes I was exasperated by her lack of decision. Everything *happened* to her because she was too shy or modest to say anything.
If you haven't read it yet, go for it!
