#MayMontage Day 7: This is clearly a #DiscussionBook - found my copy at Daunt Bookstore in London. Literally had to hunt it down since Foyles and Waterstones have run out of copies. 💕📚

Eggs Beautiful bookstore 🤩🤩 11mo

I think this one would be a great #discussionbook I personally did not care for it. You either love it or you‘re disgusted by it, I am the latter… probably for personal reasons 🤷🏻‍♀️ Did you read it? What did you think?

#MayMontage

TrishB I didn‘t read it. 11mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @TrishB you didn‘t miss anything! The opinions on this one are so strong! 11mo
EKonrad Such a hard book to rave about because of the content. But I did think it was beautifully written. 11mo

TrishB I just didn‘t feel comfortable with the content so didn‘t bother. 11mo
Julsmarshall Beautifully written and a thoughtful take in human relationships, but the content is difficult and upsetting for many. 11mo

Did a buddy read with a friend back when Oprah announced this as her book club pick. Our opposing views led to one of *the* most spirited discussions about a book I ever had.

Talk about a discussion book: this one caused such an uproar in my district and high school that multiple “discussions“ occurred at board meetings until we now have a literature list that no teacher is allowed to deviate from. Discussions also resulted in my school's principal being fired, two English teachers having letters in their file, and the English chair losing her position. #grr

SamAnne Wait, what? Good grief. 11mo
dabbe @SamAnne Oh, yeah. Here's just one news clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uA3XYFRxCbM 11mo
Amiable Oh, yes —this book scared the poop out of me! The thought that your entire life and reputation could be destroyed by the time you got off an airplane —yikes! 11mo

SamAnne Oh, so infuriating. We are going to end up with kids completely unprepared for life. 11mo
Amiable @SamAnne @dabbe The irony is that this book is about cancel culture—which that parent who didn‘t read the book would know if she had actually read the book. 🙄 And these are AP English students! If your kid can‘t handle college-level material —which may come with more adult conversations, don‘t sign them up for college-level classes. 11mo
SamAnne @amiable @dabbe exactly. Oh, the irony. 11mo
TheBookgeekFrau I have this on my TBR shelf. I think you just moved it up next in line 😂 11mo
Bookwormjillk What? I read this book a few years ago and can‘t remember what the heck would cause such a controversy. 11mo
ChelseaM6010 Oh my goodness 🫣🤦‍♀️ so frustrating 11mo
dabbe @SamAnne @Amiable @TheBookgeekFrau @Bookwormjillk @ChelseaM6010 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks
Talk about a book that gets people discussing! 🤣 This is a nationwide issue, and we Littens have to keep fighting the good fight! The ultimate irony is that by taking that book off of our list we ensured that many high school students who would have NEVER read it, now have. #lovethisgroup 💙💚💙
11mo
dabbe @Bookwormjillk The author dared to quote verbatim some of the absolutely horrific social media messages sent by some uncivilized people; hence swear words, unflattering references to genitalia, racial slurs, ... unfortunately what we all see/read/hear/feel every day. 11mo
Bookwormjillk @dabbe lol as a parent of a high schooler I guarantee these kids probably hear much worse on the bus 11mo
Amiable @dabbe The thing that strikes me is how necessary the discussions are that arise from reading this book. People like to talk about their First Amendment rights. But what does that mean in practice? The freedom to say whatever you want doesn‘t mean you are free from the consequences of expressing your words. Students —and adults—need to learn how that works. And this —a book about using social media— is the kind of book that kids can understand. (edited) 11mo

I picked this as a #DiscussionBook because I didn‘t like it and it seems everyone else in the world did. I felt I wasn‘t smart enough to follow. I kept trying to figure out the half death. Maybe it was in there but I heard the author say he added the half to differentiate the book from The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. #MayMontage

These are some of the books I used to write my senior thesis about Buffy The Vampire Slayer and whether she is the feminist icon our society believes her to be (Note: I absolutely love Buffy and I‘m a huge fan but there is a lot about the show that is harmful to young girls about beauty) I remember having an amazing discussion with my class when I presented my thesis.

#MayMontage #discussionbook I read this book in 2010 as I was leaving Ireland for the second time. The interesting thing was all my Irish friends and family had one very strong opinion about the ending, and all my American friends had an equally strong, but different opinion. I was conflicted so some good discussions were had.

Eggs Brilliant!! 11mo
AmyG I loved the movie. This is my doublespin book this month. I have always meant to read it. 11mo
Cuilin @AmyG Enjoy. Let me know what you think of the ending. Did Eilís make the right decision? 11mo

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Beautiful 😍 11mo
Vansa Do elaborate on the discussions. What did your Irish family think of it, and why did your American family disagree? I thought the book presented why she took her decision beautifully 11mo
Cuilin @Vansa okay so my friends and family in Ireland thought Elís had a way to be successful in Ireland and that many who left didn‘t have that opportunity; she was leaving when she didn‘t have to. I guess they saw emigration as a needs based situation rather than a desire for change. Using the familiar lens of the homesick diaspora they thought happiness was homeland. My US friends saw more financial opportunities for her if she left. 11mo
