Nemesis Games | James S.A. Corey
The fifth novel in James S.A. Corey's New York Times bestselling Expanse series. Now a Syfy Original series, coming December 2015! A thousand worlds have opened, and the greatest land rush in human history has begun. As wave after wave of colonists leave, the power structures of the old solar system begin to buckle. Ships are disappearing without a trace. Private armies are being secretly formed. The sole remaining protomolecule sample is stolen. Terrorist attacks previously considered impossible bring the inner planets to their knees. The sins of the past are returning to exact a terrible price. And as a new human order is struggling to be born in blood and fire, James Holden and the crew of the Rocinante must struggle to survive and get back to the only home they have left. I found it interesting that only now do we get these perspectives that we see in this book. Also holy crap it blows the status quo right outta the water.

And that's my fourth bingo... #BookSpinBingo

You know, when I complained about Cibola Burn being a little too much like the status quo not changing at all, I didn't expect the answer to be... well... this. Holy cow.

I have no cool about this book. It hits differently on a reread but the focus on consequences and showing the Roci crew directly (rather than through Jim) just leaves me with all the feelings every time. Plus the emphasis on our human need to relate to the world by creating narratives; and showing us the narratives these four create to cope.

Just finished book 5 today! 🎉🎊🎉 I love this series so much, I actually think it's one of my fave sci-fi series ever! 🚀❤ I love how intense and action packed each book is, as well as heartwarming and filled with excellent character development and found family dynamics! Each book has a big HOLY SHIT! moment that always takes me by surprise and has me racing to the end, and this was no exception! 💕📚💕

Just finished book five of the Expanse series (I forgot to post a review of book four). This one was exceptionally tense, as a rogue faction of the OPA takes action against the powers that be. Worse still, the crew of the Rocinante are separated when things get dire. Everyone is in serious jeopardy at some point. I couldn't stop when this one ended; the next book is downloaded and ready to go. What will happen next?

This series continues to impress - it has great characters, fascinating politics, and a narrative that keeps me eagerly turning the pages. I think even readers who aren‘t much into Science Fiction would find a lot to enjoy about this series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I can‘t believe it‘s only 6pm! It feels so much later. Since it‘s not, I‘m going to take advantage of the next few hours to make more progress on this book.

No Christmas Nordic mug for this shot. Since the book I‘m reading is set in space I figured I‘d go with a Star Trek mug (even though being set in space is the only similarity between the two) 🪐✨

LeahBergen Have your new Nordic mugs arrived? 2y

I spent the morning and early afternoon braving the crowds to get more of my Christmas shopping done. I‘ve done most of my shopping online this year to avoid crowds, but stocker stuffers are a little harder to purchase virtually so I had to head out.

I‘m now taking it easy with my book and a cup of delicious Christmas tea (Oh Christmas Tree by Tealish - it‘s delish 😋)

BookNAround I am really sucking wind on the stocking stuffer front this year because I‘m never out just stumbling across good little things. ::sigh:: 2y
TrishB I‘ve told the kids the sticking fillers may be a bit thin this year! 2y
LeahBergen I‘ve bought everything online this year other than some Xmas chocolate from the drugstore. 😆 2y
See All 13 Comments
MsMelissa @BookNAround Exactly! I‘m comfortable going to the bookstore, which has some cool stocking stuffers, but I‘ve been staying away from the busy bigger box stores, which is usually where I buy the non-cool stocking stuff. So I went today and let‘s just say I don‘t want to go back! 2y
MsMelissa @TrishB Are you still locked down? We are in a restricted zone, but our level of restriction isn‘t very high - everything‘s open but we need to wear masks and stay 6ft away from other people, and we are not supposed to socialize with others outside of households. It will be just my husband, daughter and I for Christmas this year. This will be the first time in my life I haven‘t spent Christmas with any extended family. 2y
MsMelissa @LeahBergen Honestly, given Alberta‘s current situation I can‘t say I blame you. Ottawa has managed to handle things well (fingers crossed it stays that way), but if that wasn‘t the case I‘d be buying absolutely everything (stocking stuff included) online! 2y
TrishB That‘s the restrictions we are in, but the shops have been bonkers (big ones open 24hrs) as only opened on Wednesday. I am trying to stay away as much as possible. Plus we don‘t have a car and I‘m trying not to use public transport! 2y
TEArificbooks And another cute Nordic mug! I love your mug collection. 2y
rabbitprincess I am really hoping everyone can keep up the good work through the holidays! I am doing my part by not going home to see my parents. First Christmas away from home 😓 I have your book ready to go but need to go to the post office in the middle of a weekday to avoid too many crowds 😬 2y
MsMelissa @rabbitprincess Me too! The holidays really worry me. It peeves me off the number of people who completely disregard the rules around socializing outside of one‘s household! Don‘t worry about the book. If you feel better waiting until after the holiday rush I have lots of other books to keep my occupied 😊 2y
MsMelissa @TrishB I can understand not wanting to use public transit! I guess the shops are probably even busier than they otherwise would have been since they were closed for a month! We haven‘t had to close much down since we opened back up after the first lockdown last spring. 2y
MsMelissa @mdm139 Since David‘s Tea finally released some Christmas/winter Nordic mugs last week I may have a few new ones coming my way 🤣 2y

I‘m going to take a break from binge-watching Star Trek: Enterprise on Netflix and actually do some reading. I‘m staying with my space-based theme though 🪐✨.

Despite my love of all things outer space, I‘m not a big Science Fiction reader — too much of it is too hard science-y for my tastes. Corey‘s The Expanse series is fabulous though! This one is book five.

LeahBergen My husband has been loving Star Trek: Discovery. 3y
MsMelissa @LeahBergen I think I‘m going to wait until more seasons have been released before I start watching that one. With the advent of Netflix and similar platforms I don‘t like having to wait for shows to be available so I‘m better off waiting until I can watch a show all at once. If only I wasn‘t so impatient 😂 3y
Ruthiella I also often prefer hard sci-fi in film format! All the jargon goes down easier for me when I have actors and a scene to look at. 🚀 3y

Lucy_Anywhere Have you read the Vorkosigan series? One of my fave sci-fi series with great characters 3y
MsMelissa @Ruthiella Exactly! 3y
MsMelissa @Lucy_Anywhere I‘ve not heard of that series. Who is the author? Any other recommendations are most appreciated ☺️ 3y
Lucy_Anywhere Lois McMaster Bujold - I think the first book is Shards of Honour. I also liked Aftershocks by Marko Kloos - it‘s a political sci-fi set after a huge conflict which is not something I‘ve come across much in sci-fi! 3y
MrT I love the dirt of this book series, the flawed characters and that space can kill you 3y
MrT The opposite to Star Trek's gleaming ships and wonderful almost godlike technology. I'm on book no.6. 3y
MrT I also recommend the Becky Chamber's trilogy. 3y
MsMelissa @Lucy_Anywhere Thank you! I look for the series. I‘ll also look for the Kloos book. I love the idea of political sci-FI. 2y
MsMelissa @MrT Yes, that‘s one of the things I like about the series too. I‘m usually more of a gleaming ships fan (I adore the Enterprise of the recent reboot films), but there is something about this series that sucks you right in. 2y
MsMelissa @MrT I have read the first book in Chambers‘ trilogy. I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading book two. 2y

Everything about this book was in line with where this series has been going and can‘t be faulted for leaving the epic protomolecule behind for an equally epic inner planets storyline. This is 31/2 stories in one with super backstory development that, like I said doesn‘t feel out of place. Yet, like the Empire Strikes Back, when this comes to the end you really only feel set up for the next one- certainly not a bad thing at all!

After 16 hours of #audiobook goodness, I‘m back loving #TheExpanse. Book #4 seriously discouraged me, but this installment has restored my faith. Surprisingly, I liked how the crew of the Rocinante split up allowing us to learn more about some back stories. Need to get on some of the novellas too for more character development. Loving this world again so much that I‘m planning on finishing this series in 2020, assuming book #9 releases this year.

Started audiobook 5 of The Expanse two days ago. Liking it much more than #4 in series. Actually just started watching season 4 of show and I‘m optimistic that TV producers might improve upon the book...words I never really thought I‘d put out into the universe.

imyril Book Four drove me to despair - so frustrating! ...but Nemesis Games is my joint favourite of the series. Hopefully it keeps working for you :) 3y
DogMomIrene @imyril That's such great news! I stopped reading after 3 because I didn't want to listen to a different narrator. When they got Jefferson Mays to read book 4, I was so thrilled, but followed by despairing disappointment. Watching the show has made me remember how much I love the characters, so YES, so excited that 5 is your fave! 3y

I had a fun essay to write for my Library Management class today! Pick a literary character that you consider to be a leader and discuss what qualities make them one. I chose James Holden from the Expanse series because he always rises to the occasion and handles tough decisions, even if he necessarily doesn't want to be the one in charge.

Which character would you guys choose and why? 💕📚

DaveGreen7777 She may not exactly be considered a leader, but I immediately thought of Nynaeve from the Wheel of Time series! While her role as a Wisdom in her village is more of a consultant than that of an official leader, it always stood out to me how she takes it upon herself to go after the missing villagers and try to protect them, even putting herself at risk to save them. She may have not been elected a leader, but Nynaeve certainly acts like one! 4y
Branwen @DaveGreen7777 You know what, friend? YOU ARE SO RIGHT! I didn't even think of Nynaeve for this, but now that you bring it up she really is such a perfect choice! I love how she always seeks to protect her 'villagers' even if it means becoming an Aes Sedai to do it! 😍💕 4y

Despite being over 500 pages, it felt short. If I had to describe it, I‘d say it‘s a mid-series reset. All of the rules have been changed, the pieces rearranged.

As soon as I got to the second chapter and saw that all the perspectives would be from the members of the crew, I knew things were about to go very, very wrong for everyone. I definitely nailed it with that guess. I like that these books explore how humanity changes but also fails to change in the face of incredible discoveries. This book really got to the heart of that theme. It was stressful all the way through, but in the best possible way.
