Curse of the Pharaohs
Curse of the Pharaohs: second vol in series | Elizabeth Peters
22 posts | 58 read | 12 to read
Join our plucky Victorian Egyptologist , together with her devastatingly handsome and brilliant husband Radcliffe, in another exciting escapade When Lady Baskerville's husband Sir Henry dies after discovering what may have been an undisturbed royal tomb in Luxor, she appeals to eminent archaeologist Radcliffe Emerson and his wife Amelia to take over the excavation. Amid rumours of a curse haunting all those involved with the dig, the intrepid couple proceeds to Egypt, where they begin to suspect that Sir Henry did not die a natural death, and they are confident that the accidents that plague the dig are caused by a sinister human element, not a pharoah's curse

Veggie dog mummies, tun-not pasta salad, & blueberry car cakes for Eliot tomorrow 🥙 goes with the theme of another excellent Amelia Peabody mystery 🕵️ I guessed the murderer immediately (as did Amelia) but still enjoyed the why & how 📚ready for more! & excited for their precocious son to join them in the next installment

Chrissyreadit Looks delicious! 2y
StaceGhost @Chrissyreadit my husband already ate the remaining mummies lol 2y

This precious face passed away in February. He was the best reading buddy ever and I miss him terribly. Curling up with a book just isn't the same without him. 😔 His name was Ramses after Amelia Peabody's son in the tagged series. Love you so much, Little Man. 3/5/10-2/28/22 💔

Trying book 2 in the Amelia Peabody Series as an audiobook. Read book 1 a few years ago, and to be fair wasn‘t overly impressed, but first book in the series so thought I‘d give book 2 a try given the recommendations on Litsy.

wordzie Sounds 😎 5y
Shemac77 I‘ve read the entire series three times and loved them every time; however, I can definitely see it not being everyone‘s cup of tea. 5y
DGRachel I love this series. I read them all in print and have been slowly rereading via audio narrated by the incomparable Barbara Rosenblat. I only have a couple left and I‘m saddened by that so I keep putting off the next one. Ridiculous, I know. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y

LeslieO I love these on audio! Barbara Rosenblat is so good! @DGRachel Don‘t you love her Emerson voice? 5y
DGRachel @LeslieO She‘s so phenomenal that I seriously forget I‘m listening to just one person and not a full cast! 5y
Ruthiella @DGRachel @LeslieO I totally concur! Barbara Rosenblat is AMAZING! One of the few cases where I prefer audio over print!❤️😀 5y
LeslieO @Ruthiella @DGRachel I listened to the Mrs. Pollifax books because of Barbara! 5y
EadieB Must get the audio for these books! I own a bunch of the books but sounds like Audio is the way to go with these! 5y

I‘m flying through this series because these books are just so much fun! They have substance but they‘re light in tone, which can be so refreshing sometimes. Amelia Peabody Emerson is clever, humorous, and very human, which makes her a fun heroine.

I love these books! Amelia Peabody as a detective and her narration are so entertaining. I love all the little witty comments about womanhood and her husband throughout. Peabody is one of my favourite characters of all time!

Another fun adventure in the deserts of Egypt with Emerson & Peabody. I liked that this one brushed against the contours of the discovery of King Tut‘s tomb, though it didn‘t go as far as to preempt that. I loved the contrast of the sensibility of Amelia against the cliches presented of Victorian women, and just watching Emerson & Peabody play of one another is always a delight. These are great refreshers between other reads & just fun times.

#smugmarrieds The Emersons may be my favorite married couple in all literature. #junebookbugs

PurpleyPumpkin That's a great pick! I've been having trouble coming up with something - forgot about these two! 7y
leslieisreading I listened to the first two on audio a couple years ago and loved them, but the series kind of dropped off of my radar. I need to listen to the third soon! 7y
Shemac77 I loved this series! And may have read it in it's entirety three times. 7y

DGRachel @Shemac77 @leslieisreading I've read them all in print once and listened to all but the last two or three in audio. I'm slowly going through them in between other things. 7y
Shemac77 You've inspired me to restart the series! 7y
DGRachel @Shemac77 That makes my heart happy! Yay! 7y
Andrew65 @DGRachel I read the first one and only really thought it was okay, not read another since. Do they get better than the first one? 7y
DGRachel @Andrew65 I personally love them, but I don't know that the later books are better than the first. If you didn't care for the first one, you probably won't care for the rest of the series. There are some things that happen later, some plot points that go across several novels that actually drive me nuts, but overall, I love the characters, so I forgive those things. 7y
Andrew65 @DGRachel I had been looking forward to reading the series so much and was just disappointed with the first one. Usually we seem to have enjoyed the same books. This was my BRIEF notes on it 'A bit disappointing this one. On the front it says a murder mystery but no-one was murdered! A bit too pedestrian for me. 2.5 Stars., ' 7y
DGRachel @Andrew65 Well, they're quick reads, so I say grab the second one and give it a shot. If you don't enjoy it, then you'll know the series just isn't for you. 😁 7y
Andrew65 @DGRachel I agree, always like to give a series 2 books. You have tempted me. 😊 7y
batsy I enjoyed this series, especially the early books. The later books become a bit of a convoluted mess, imo. Perfect choice for #smugmarrieds. The Emersons do drive me nuts in that respect 😁 7y

I listened to this book on our road trip to Lake Tahoe this week. Also I knit some more of these blue striped socks.

I love all the Amelia Peabody mysteries! They are great to listen to with the family. The reader does all the accents and voices too.

After a mediocre first installment, I wanted to read the second book as this series has many high reviews. Unfortunately this book was as tedious and predictable as the first - with an annoyingly similar storyline.

So many of my friends LOVE Amelia Peabody, and I get why. She's spunky and funny, and her banter with Emerson is lots of fun. But she frustrates me. I get tired of a character who has so little self-awareness or willingness to admit when she's wrong! Add in several unfunny stereotypes played for laughs... and I wasn't really feelin' it on this one.

As if I didn't have enough on my reading plate at the moment... this one just got auto-checked out onto my Kindle! More Amelia Peabody is a good thing, though...
