Life! Like the warm life in my arms. But then there can suddenly be too much of it, too much life, and different breathlessness, different danger...

Crossing to Safety | Wallace Stegner

Pickpick

Stegner relays through brilliant, simple, and subtle details the dynamic relationship between two very different couples and their life-long friendship. A character study of loyalty, love, fear, envy, and the bonds of friendship. Relationships and friendships change us, teach us about ourselves, and ultimately make us stronger. How does one measure success at the end of one‘s life? Leaves the reader with many questions about life to ponder.

Sing, Unburied, Sing | Jesmyn Ward

Pickpick

“I like to think I know what death is. I like to think that it‘s something I could look at straight,” says thirteen-year-old Jojo, and by the end of the story, he and the reader have come full circle. With richly drawn characters, Ward links an iconic, multi-generational, present-day story of addiction, shame and guilt drawn with the inherited burden of American history. Ward‘s lyrical prose is a haunting and magical work of art.

kspenmoll Lovely review, for a beautiful book. 6y

“You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintery light. But you knew there would always be the spring, as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person died for no reason.”
― Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast

It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. - Sam to Frodo, The Lord of the Rings

You need to surrender yourself to death before you ever begin, and accept your life as a state of grace, and then and only then will you be good enough.

LunaSaintClaire I gave this 5 Stars. See my review on Goodreads and Amazon. Exquisite writing 💚 6y

What's gone before you, and what will come after,' I said instead.
'Beg pardon?'
'The past ahead. Time is like a river and you float with the current. Your ancestors set off before you did, so they're far ahead. Your descendants will sail it after.

“There are all kinds of silences and each of them means a different thing. There is the silence that comes with morning in a forest, and this is different from the silence of a sleeping city. There is silence after a rainstorm, and before a rainstorm, and these are not the same. There is the silence of emptiness, the silence of fear, the silence of doubt. ...Whatever the mood ... It is a soundless echo.” West with the Night – Beryl Markham

October is domestic violence month. My novel The Sleeping Serpent is about narcissistic abuse. Relationship abuse is more common that you expect. I hope my book elucidates the characteristics of narcissists, and the inner wounds of their victims.

My inspiration, Jim Harrison 💜 My favorite, Legends of the Fall, for the stark beauty of his sentences. They make me weep.

Tamra Have you read his poem postcard correspondence with poet Ted Kooser? Wonderful! 7y

Blessed with great reviews. Thank you.
Wickedly dark and addictive. Enticingly sinful & sexy as hell ❤ An immensely erotic, deliciously dark, and psychologically captivating new novel that dips into the dark seedy side of yoga. Proof this can happen to anyone!

My first Elizabeth Strout read. I love it, and wonder why it took me so long. ☺

tammysue Loved it too! Glad you enjoyed it!👍🏻 7y
LunaSaintClaire I just finished Olive Kitteridge, by Elizabeth Strout. Amazing writer. She takes the quotidian of the mundane world and shines a sunbeam on it though a magnifying glass until it bursts into flame. Seriously... that's how I describe it. 7y
