After loving Napolitano‘s 2 most recent books, I snapped this one up when it popped up at my library. It follows a handful of characters, including Flannery O‘Connor and her peacocks, in small town Georgia in the late 50s/early 60s. I think she develops characters so well and I felt the emotions of these people right alongside them. And Otis approves of peacocks as storyline!

BarbaraBB I didn‘t know she wrote more than the two we‘re always talking about! 3mo
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB Looks like her debut is out of print but is being rereleased in a couple months, so she actually has 4 books total. 3mo

I teach several of O'Connor's stories every spring, and I decided this year particularly I needed some more context and to rethink whether I was going to teach them at all. I am grateful for the penultimate chapter especially in helping me to think about these things. I believe I'm going to have to continue my research though. Aside from all that, this book on its own is quite good.

SamAnne I‘m reading her complete story collection right now. Glad to finally read more of her but oh it can be a dark place! (edited) 4y

Normally I'd be out running right now on a Saturday morning, but I'm still feeling just a little under the weather, and I see no reason to push it. This all means I get some extra reading in before I need to start running errands

A Prayer Journal | Flannery O'Connor

Flannery O‘Connor was born on this day in 1925. Diagnosed with lupus in her twenties, she was told she only had a few years, but managed to produce two more novels and 30 short stories, attempting to write for a couple of hours a day in her bed toward the end. Treatment for lupus has improved since the 1950s. She also raised peacocks. From her Prayer Journal: “Give me the courage to stand the pain to get the grace.”

1 / 25 #shortstories for 2020

• First #shortstory of 2020 complete: "You Can't Be Any Poorer Than Dead" by Flannery O'Connor from the tagged book. As usual, I detected faint whiffs of religious hypocrisy and characters rather in need of the usual redemption. I'll try to read more Flannery O'Connor this year ?? •

My Christmas books. I bought Nine Stories with proceeds from my podcast, as well as the ‘Salem‘s Lot Blu-Ray (presents for myself!). I also received two lovely blank books. Fulfilling my goals of owning and reading all works by all three of these authors. Not shown: plethora of Kindle books also earned and gifted. 🥰 #flanneryoconnor #stephenking #jdsalinger #bucketlist #christmaspresents #bookhaul #shortstories

In 1949 a promising writer from Georgia was residing in a sparse in New York City. In 1949 Flannery O‘Connor gladly accepted Robert and Sally Fitzgerald offer to live with them so she could finish Wise Blood!

In the Uncollected Letters Of Flannery O‘Connor and friends we get a better idea of how her Catholic Faith influenced her writing as well as as her opinions against Communism though she was not very vocal about... the
