Devotions: The Selected Poems of Mary Oliver
Devotions: The Selected Poems of Mary Oliver | Mary Oliver
Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Mary Oliver presents a personal selection of her best work in this definitive collection spanning more than five decades of her esteemed literary career. Throughout her celebrated career, Mary Oliver has touched countless readers with her brilliantly crafted verse, expounding on her love for the physical world and the powerful bonds between all living things. Identified as "far and away, this country's best selling poet" by Dwight Garner, she now returns with a stunning and definitive collection of her writing from the last fifty years. Carefully curated, these 200 plus poems feature Oliver's work from her very first book of poetry, No Voyage and Other Poems, published in 1963 at the age of 28, through her most recent collection, Felicity, published in 2015. This timeless volume, arranged by Oliver herself, showcases the beloved poet at her edifying best. Within these pages, she provides us with an extraordinary and invaluable collection of her passionate, perceptive, and much-treasured observations of the natural world.

I'm such a mood reader. I usually have several books going at once because I never know what I'll be in the mood to read. Trying to decide between some more Mary Oliver poetry & our #mgbuddyread book for this month. One thing I didn't have trouble deciding on was my birthday freebie from Starbucks 😉

Megabooks I know the struggle only too well! 1mo
mrp27 Happy Birthday!! 🎉📚📚🎂 I just finished Invisible Emmie, I liked it! 1mo
Lmstraubie @mrp27 Thank you 🙂 I opted for the poetry, but I'm off this week so I'll get to Emmie too. Looking forward to our discussion 🙂 1mo

Hands down, this is the best poetry book I‘ve read in years. I‘m incredibly impressed. I only wish I had read her poetry earlier. She has so much depth and wisdom, and there‘s a quietness in these poems that both calms and inspires me. Highly recommended! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!!! #poetry

wanderinglynn If you liked her poetry & love dogs, I recommend her 2mo
slategreyskies @wanderinglynn I actually just drove to one of our county‘s library branches that I‘d never been to before just so I could check out that book. I got that one and also Felicity. I‘m excited that you liked that one. I expect to read it this weekend! :) 2mo

Mary Oliver, I adore her. Cried when I heard she passed last month. #literarylove #maryoliver

Lynnsoprano As part of our Unitarian service the Sunday after she passed, two of our members did readings from her work. I‘ve heard it said that if Unitarians has a patron saint, it would be Mary Oliver. 4mo
vkois88 I'll have to look into her work... I'm not a huge poetry person, but I've heard so many people praise her writing that I'm intrigued 4mo

As a Christmas present, my wife bought me two custom-made suits. On the inside lining near the pocket, I chose this quote by Mary Oliver.
The whole quote is:
Instructions for living a life:
Pay attention.
Be astonished.
Tell about it.
(You can read the full poem here http://alturl.com/cxdt9)
With her passing, I am deeply saddened and feel like we have lost something very special. Her wisdom, insight, and deep love for the world will be missed.

When reading the NY Times article about Mary Oliver‘s death, I was struck by how much I LOVE the accompanying photo. It feels like she‘s looking right into me (& bringing me the peace of sitting on a comfy couch, in the sunlight, with my hand resting in a slumbering dog‘s curly fur). I think I‘m going to print it out & put it in my office. It, along with the photo of Vonnegut above, are what I consider to be the #bestauthorphotos. Show me yours!

A Reader's Corner Highly Recommended read. There is no living poet I love more than Mary Oliver. Her poetry is so beautiful and always makes me feel good. If you can read Mary Oliver and still say you hate poetry - I just can't even. This is a book I will read from every day and so should you. Buy this book, read this book, discover the beauty of nature, and the beauty of poetry written by a master of language.

Evidently I‘ve been living under a rock, and only today realized this was happening! I‘ve strayed away from poetry and need to get back into it. Since April is National Poetry Month, it seems appropriate to jump back into it with this challenge. I have several poetry books by Mary Oliver, but I‘ve never read anything by Alice Oswald or Tracy K. Smith. Looking forward to it! #poetrychallenge2018
