OMG this book is SOO boring. I can not believe that this is still a classic and how many times the movie has been remade. UGHH.

Overall I may not have enjoyed this book, but I did find it interesting. And parts of me see why others like it, and why people use it for character studies. For me, this will never be a book I recommend, but it will be a book I argue and debate.

LibrarianRyan Full, ie Long review on GR and LT. 4y
MaGoose I read this one eons ago, but remember not liking it all that much either. 4y
tpixie @LibrarianRyan I loved it years ago, but when I saw the audiobook was 11 hours, now I don‘t know if I want to commit to a book that I‘ve read that I know will be a slow moving read (because it‘s old)! Instead I‘m listening to (edited) 4y

LibrarianRyan @tpixie I wold have relished 11 hours. The free unabridged version from PRH was 18 hours. If it wasn't for a challenge, I would NEVER have finished it. 4y
valeriegeary I'm reading this for the first time... Trying to... I'm having trouble wanting to pick it up after I set it down again. Moments of it are lovely and then other times it feels so preachy and old fashioned. 4y
RvnclawWhovian I started this one and haven‘t picked it back up 😕 4y
LibrarianRyan @valeriegeary I can not tell you how many times I have picked this up and put it down. many, many, many times. I only finished it because it was free and for a challenge. 😓 4y
LibrarianRyan @RvnclawWhovian don't blame you 4y
ljuliel No offense to those that like it, but I think it‘s SAPPY. Thanks, Ryan, for speaking your mind. 😁 4y
LibrarianRyan @ljuliel always! 😃 😄 4y
Laughterhp I bailed on this book like 2 years ago 😬😬 and have no desire to pick it up again 4y
Scochrane26 I read this during a recovery from an accident. I didn‘t have much to do, & a friend was great & brought me dvds & books. Like many classics for me, it was just ok. I wasn‘t sure if I didn‘t love it because the book is boring or because I was already bored. I haven‘t seen any of the movies but do want to see the current one, mainly because of the actresses in it. Think this will be the rare case of liking a movie more than the book. 4y
Hooked_on_books Apparently Alcott herself wasn‘t a fan of it, so you‘re in good company! 4y
Librariana So...... I haven't read this... and I genuinely don't know if I even want to! I'm familiar with the story... and I guess in my mind that's enough to justify going and picking up modern retellings of this classic (and others!) ? I read the graphic novel "Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy" and found it to be ok, especially for a younger audience. I did go ahead and pick up 4y
Librariana We'll see how the ⬆️ linked title turns out. Is that something you'd consider reading, Ryan? A modern retelling of a classic or even a graphic novel version of such? @Hooked_on_books - Holly, I had NO idea Alcott felt that way about her own work! 4y
LibrarianRyan @Librariana I would read a retelling. And a GN. I love to see how they stand up to the original. 4y
Cinfhen I just read it and thought it was pretty good considering it was written in the 1800‘s! 4y

Well I guess I expected something a little more Christmas-y from this Christmas classic! This was an Audible freebie from 2013 that I only just listened to, so while I appreciate lightening my digital TBR, I guess I had higher hopes for this novella. The story is sweet enough and well-performed and it‘s my #PublicDomain for #Booked2019! #WinterGames #ReadNosedReindeer 26pts #AudioColoring

Cinfhen Wow!!! You‘ve been an Audible listener a long time 🤗I just really got into audiobooks this year but they are quickly becoming my favorite medium. Do u have any recommendations??? 4y
TorieStorieS @Cinfhen I joined in 2012, but got more invested the following year! I have a few super favorite performers- Caroline Lee is a great Australian performer, Kirby Heyborne is terrific- Macleod Andrews is also great!! You‘ve inspired me to make some best of the decade/year posts so more to come! 4y
StayCurious Excellent! +21 for holiday read! 4y

BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m amazed at how many audiobooks I have that are OLD. My mom and I were early adopters of audio books. Back when we joined Audible we had to download files and burn them to CDs! Today‘s methods are a gazillion times easier! I also rented audiobooks on cassette from a little neighborhood shop back in the early 1990s. 🤪@Cinfhen 4y
TorieStorieS @BarbaraTheBibliophage Wow!! I didn‘t know that was how Audible started! I do have a few audiobooks on CD- but the format really is at its best today, I think! I appreciate being able to easily go back 15 seconds and the way your place is impeccably saved!! 😃 4y
Cinfhen That‘s crazzzzy @BarbaraTheBibliophage you REALLY ARE an #OG 😘😘 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @TorieStorieS For sure, the technology has improved a ton! 4y

Looking forward to a cosy, quiet day after Christmas Eve festivities. I ate my weight in ravioli and 7 fishes. I‘m cheating with my #publicdomain pick for #booked2019 just cause I can. Merry merry, Happy happy.

alisiakae Sounds delicious! 4y
Cinfhen Not cheating being strategic 😉 4y
eanderson Lol! It‘s easy to eat your weight in ravioli!!! 4y

MicheleinPhilly @Cinfhen I realized I only have a week left and started to panic. Just downloaded Kindred graphic novel for my last prompt. 🤓 4y
MicheleinPhilly @eanderson Whenever someone asks my aunt, “May I bring a friend, co-worker, significant other? Will there be enough food?” she just laughs like, “Are you new here?” 4y
Bookzombie I may have to steal your idea about being strategic. It‘s getting down to the wire for me also! #Booked2019 4y
MicheleinPhilly @Bookzombie How many prompts do you have left? 4y
Bookzombie 2 and a half. I‘m in the middle of one. Then have public domain and Muslim author or main character. If I don‘t let time get away from me, I should be okay. I also need to post several that I have completed. Procrastinating is kind of my thing. 😂 4y
MicheleinPhilly @Bookzombie Well I knocked this one out in about 6 minutes. ☺️ 4y

One of my Christmas traditions is a rereading of A Christmas Carol and Tim Curry's narration was fantastic in this one.

#Booked2019 #Autumn #PublicDomain

It‘s one thing to read historical fiction by a contemporary author, but it‘s quite another thing to read fiction written in another era. If the language and morés of the past fade to the background, you‘re probably reading a classic. This book is not that, even though both Agatha Christie & Dorothy Sayers gave it high praise. That those writers liked it is the reason that I always wanted to read it, and this ⬇️

gradcat ⬆️ (cont) prompt gave me the impetus for getting after it. While the story is good enough, the plot is extremely convoluted and the language very stilted. I had trouble keeping up with the goings-on in this mystery novel, mostly because of the myriad doings of the murdered businessman in his financial and marital affairs. I won‘t pan the book—it‘s too well written for that—but I will put it at the very lowest end of the so-so category. ♥️ (edited) 4y
Cinfhen That was the nicest negative review I ever read 😘 4y
gradcat @Cinfhen It‘s so hard for me to pan a book! I need to toughen up!! 😂 4y
