Very readable but calling it All Fours lite. Maybe because I am at least 20 years past where these characters are at in life I just don‘t get it.

squirrelbrain Hmmm, I‘m still not sure I want to read this one. 🤔 7h
Hooked_on_books Oh dear. I hated AF so am always concerned with that comp. I have this one hold from the library and so will at least try it. I‘m curious now to see if I bail. 7h
BarbaraBB I am sorry you didn‘t enjoy it that much. Still a pick though! 6h

Such a bleak and depressing read. But a good one. Alice becomes mentally ill during her first year at college and it changes her and her life forever: the meds, the frustration, the shame, the friends who can‘t stay, the shattered dreams. I didn‘t always like DeBoer‘s lack of emotion in his writing but it might be the best and most respectful way to share Alice‘s story.

ChaoticMissAdventures I am having trouble getting my hands on this one, but it sounds like my type of book so I need to get onto Blackwells! 15h
sarahbarnes Okay, sold! 14h

I enjoyed this! Perhaps I needed more of a lighthearted and easy to follow story while hosting family and creating Christmas magic for my kids. Super exhausting, but being accompanied by this band of siblings during their cross-country roadtrip was a welcome addition to my own chaos. Interesting, as I read it following Lion, another #ToB26 longlist title, and both are focused on fathers.

ChaoticMissAdventures I have been thinking I need more lighthearted books in general! When people ask me for recs I rarely have anything that isn't super heavy. 20h

I loved the beginning but after the halfway point I began to feel disinterested. I listened during the holiday rush which was probably a contributing factor, so take this with a grain of salt. Plus, this is the fourth book in a quartet, and the only I‘ve read. Would I have appreciated this more having read the first three? Probably. But I suspect we‘ll never know. lol. Also, this cover! Gorgeous. #ToB26

squirrelbrain I didn‘t realise this was part of a quartet. 🤔 Like you, I appreciated the start of this but then grew more disinterested and there wasn‘t much of an ‘ending‘. 20h
BarbaraBB I liked it more than you and @squirrelbrain but I had no idea it was part of a quartet! 19h

#WeeklyForecast 52/25

To end the year in style I have started Brightly Shining. Next will be another #ToB26 read (the tagged book) and I want to read our #EuropaCollective January book (in Dutch though, couldn‘t find an English copy where I live).

Ruthiella Considering it was written originally in German, it wouldn‘t matter too much if you read it in Dutch instead of English, or? 2d
squirrelbrain I recently read The Mind Reels and appreciated it - just haven‘t got round to reviewing it yet. 2d
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella No you‘re right it shouldn‘t be a problem. It‘s just that I like the Europa Edition so much 😉 2d

BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain That‘s good to know. I didn‘t intend to read it but @deblovestoread and @Hooked_on_books review made me change my mind 2d
squirrelbrain Yes, I didn‘t intend to read it either but it‘s worth it. 2d
Hooked_on_books I hope it works for you! It‘s matter of fact rather than sympathetic to its character, which I always appreciate. 2d
tpixie @BarbaraBB I was going through my notes app and just saw you lived in the Netherlands- I was just there in October and loved it. Sorry I missed you! We went to Amsterdam, Haarlem, Delft, The Hague, and Otterlo 🇳🇱 2d
sarahbarnes Still on the fence about The Mind Reels so will look forward to your review! 1d
BarbaraBB @tpixie I‘d have loved to show you Amsterdam (where I live) but it sounds like you did find your way around perfectly and you chose some great places to visit! 1d
tpixie @BarbaraBB too bad I didn‘t see this info BEFORE I left! We ate at this great soup place by Rembrandt‘s house. Soupenzo. I bought the recipe book! https://maps.app.goo.gl/mJtCy7tk43owmyBfA?g_st=ipc 20h
BarbaraBB @tpixie Yes that is a great place and I have the book too! Such comfort soups! 19h
tpixie @BarbaraBB awesome! Yes we went twice. Lol I hope Google Translate does a good job helping me translate the recipes. 😝 19h
BarbaraBB @tpixie I was wondering indeed if they published an English edition - which they should imo! 18h
BarbaraBB @tpixie you can find some translated recipes here: https://soupenzo.nl/en/recipes/ (edited) 18h
tpixie @BarbaraBB I thought it might be a fun challenge to try to interpret the recipes! oh! Thanks for the link! 14h

A son has been living in Tokyo for twelve years when his mother suddenly comes visiting him from the US, after they‘ve been estranged for all those years. Their relationship is a complicated one, their conversations always cut short. Their past is filled with unsolved business, their current lives a search for meaning I think. The Tokyo setting is what I loved most about the book. A light pick.

BarbaraBB @Larkken His writing is so good! 2d
Hooked_on_books BW showed a lot of promise with his debut and I feel like he‘s come into his own. I liked this one. I especially liked the inclusion of photos of Tokyo, which really helped me feel immersed in the place. 2d
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books I love his writing style, so authentic and yes those photos definitely added to the atmosphere of the book. 2d

Just after I posted that I didn‘t have access to this #ToB26 shortlist title, I found it on Libby with another library through which I have a card. Anyway, I listened to this one and loved the beginning. I was so in through the first half of this director‘s life and connections but the second half didn‘t work for me. I‘m also wondering if it‘s due to the audio and my hectic life around the holidays. I may revisit this in the future.

Vera‘s grandparents left Armenia after the massacre and started anew in Lebanon. Years later Vera and her parents leave for the US when the situation in Lebanon becomes too dangerous.
9/11 brings back memories of a family leaving so much behind, not just danger and war, but also family, friends and happy memories. A thought provoking book.

The Garden: A Novel | Nick Newman

#ToB26 #23

This is a very atmospheric and disturbing dystopian book about two sisters, living an isolated life in what mostly is a walled garden and what used to be the kitchen of the mansion they lived in before. A mansion that has been shut down for years because their mother wanted that. I was never quite sure of what happened, what was true and what not. The ending is vague too yet it was a very satisfying read for me.

Hooked_on_books Very interesting! This sounds like something I‘ll either really like or absolutely hate. 😂 I have it on hold at the library, so I‘ll get to see where I come down on it. 7d
