Bailedbailed

I'm bailing on this one at 22%. I usually really enjoy strange, confusing novels, but this one just isn't hitting for me. The big question is: Can I still consider myself a #tob26 shortlist completist if I don't finish this one? It doesn't count as completed for the challenge on TheStorygraph, but I bet I could still justify buying myself the mug.

LiteraryinPA I think yes. You read part of the book, got a sense of its style and contents, and then decided not to finish it. That‘s way different from just skipping it. now

I have mixed feelings about this novel. The writing and the storytelling are engaging overall, but I find the structure disappointing and confusing. I don't understand why it doesn't circle back around to the adult Vera storyline. It leaves me unsatisfied. (Also, while the narrator of the audiobook puts forth a solid performance, the editing doesn't make sense to me. There are background and mouth noises I don't expect to hear.) #tob26

Bailedbailed

I‘m bailing on this one. I‘ve been trying for a week and I‘m just not into it. I may try again if it advances in #ToB26

BkClubCare I am feeling that way about Endling. It just isn't grabbing me and then I have to go back and read the first few pages again and then I am confusing myself! (edited) 2d
Lesliereadsalot I think I bailed on this one too and didn‘t even bother with a review. 2d
ImperfectCJ I'm listening to the audiobook right now. Jury's still out. 2d

Bookwormjillk @BkClubCare zoinks! That‘s my next read 😂 2d
Chelsea.Poole I listened to the entire audiobook and I‘m not sure what happened. It was certainly the wrong book for me to engage with over the holidays. I don‘t think you‘re missing much. 2d
Hooked_on_books I‘m not planning to read this one at all. I looked at it several times when it first came out because I love the cover, but early reviews made me think it wouldn‘t be for me. Based on your review, I think I made the right choice. 2d
squirrelbrain Hmmm, I bought this one, although it is a used copy. I might shuffle it to the bottom of the ToB TBR pile. 2d
sarahbarnes Hmm, good to know. I‘ve been on the fence about this one. I won‘t rush to read it. 5m

I wonder why this book is shortlisted. It‘s about an unlikable girl creating a man out of a blob she finds in an alleyway.
Also, there is a some symbolism and self-discovery but it is all so obvious. Is it a YA book? It might be. And that‘s why I wonder why it‘s on the list. Enjoyable but forgettable.

squirrelbrain It did feel a bit YA, you‘re right. 3d
ferskner The publisher pushed this so hard but everything I've heard from readers is that it's meh. 2d
BarbaraBB @ferskner I was surprised how many people liked it but it was not for me! Not really. 2d

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick It sounds weird enough that I just might give it a whirl. 2d
BarbaraBB @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick It‘s a quick and easy read! I‘d certainly give it a try! 2d
sarahbarnes Ugh. I am so uninterested in reading this and your review only solidifies that for me. Why is the shortlist never as good as I want it to be? Yes, many other books to read! 3m

I really tried but at 22% I call it quits. It‘s so much longer and I am not that invested in the story so far. Too many books, too little time 🤷🏻‍♀️

BkClubCare Yeah, I am starting to think I won't make it to Completist status for ToB this year. And that's okay. 3d
BarbaraBB @BkClubCare I won‘t even try this year! 3d
Bookwormjillk I am still miles back on the library waiting list for this one. My friend at work said I wouldn't like it so I don't know if I should believe her or read it and like it out of spite. 3d

ChaoticMissAdventures Oh no! I have a beautiful copy that has just been sitting here. It is on my short list. I think her books in this vein (Including Babel) are do a very specific reader so I am hoping I get on with this one. 3d
BarbaraBB @Bookwormjillk 🤣 Choices choices! 3d
BarbaraBB @ChaoticMissAdventures I did like Babel but I read that in print and audio is much harder for me (no native English) so I got a bit lost and didn‘t feel invested enough to find out! 3d
Hooked_on_books I have zero interest in reading this book. Babel wasn‘t for me so I‘m not much interested in her fantasy. (I did like Yellowface, though.) From what I‘ve read, her readers are not as happy with this one as they were with Babel. 3d
BarbaraBB @dabbe 🙌🏽 3d
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books I agree on that, Babel was better, but then again, who am I to judge, bailing after 22%… (edited) 3d
LeeRHarry I thought Babel was ok and I didn‘t like Yellowface so I won‘t be reading anything else from this author anytime soon. As you said, too many books too little time! 😊 3d
Flaneurette You aren‘t really missing much, I should have bailed but I persevered because some of the afterlife/hell stuff was interesting. It took me Forever to read and put me in a bit of a slump. The emotional core of this book is very YA with some show-offy, look how smart I am bits thrown in. There was some important stuff about being female in academia and monstrous men in power but I know this already 3d
BarbaraBB @Flaneurette Thank you for this post. It confirms what I expected 😘 3d
squirrelbrain I tried this in print and bailed fairly quickly. I have the audio on reserve but I don‘t think I‘m going to bother. I‘m not going to be a completist either @bkclubcare as I‘m not going to read the Bunny one. I‘m reading as many as I like the look of from the longlist. 3d
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain @BkClubCare I don‘t think I will read Bunny nor 3d
TrishB @squirrelbrain I didn‘t think you‘d like this one Helen! It‘s certainly not her best, but I did like it. Barbara- I didn‘t see you liking this either! 3d
julesG What @TrishB said. 3d
Lesliereadsalot Two losers in a row! Good luck on your next one 🩷 3d
REPollock I have similar meh feelings about this. My library loan expired and I had a lot left so I got back on the list for it but when I come back up for it, my plan is to read one chapter and if I‘m still meh, bail. 3d
BarbaraBB @TrishB @julesG We should have talked about this at Gladstone‘s 😄 3d
IMASLOWREADER love the power of dnf lol 3d
julesG We should have. 😁 3d
mobill76 Exactly what I want to know about a book. I'm too old to slog through everything on my list. 2d
kwmg40 I'm wondering if I'm the only one who actually liked this book! 😂 1d
BarbaraBB @kwmg40 And the people who read the ToB longlist en shortlisted it 😄 1d
kwmg40 @BarbaraBB Phew, thanks for the reminder than I'm not the only one! 😅 24h
sarahbarnes I wasn‘t planning to read this one and now I definitely won‘t! Onward! 😆 1m

#WeeklyForecast

I am rereading The Correspondent for #WintercampLitsy and am loving it again. Next will be either Blob or Katabasis for #ToB26 and I also want to pick up Banana Yoshimoto‘s short stories. This might be a bit ambitious because it‘s back to work again tomorrow, but we‘ll see.

The Ten Year Affair | Erin Somers

Pickpick

This ten year affair is the ultimate example of “the grass is always greener on the other side”. I thought what Somers did with MC Cora‘s imagination of an affair with a fellow parent met in baby group was brilliant. Perfectly displaying human nature to expect to have it all using a group of cringey millennials and their offspring over a decade. These people are horrible but still a bit relatable, which is uncomfortable.
#ToB26 shortlist.

Lesliereadsalot Exactly! 7d
AmyG Well said. (edited) 7d

The Garden: A Novel | Nick Newman
post image
Pickpick

Elderly sisters are locked away in an English manor house. As we read, we are becoming more and more aware of their odd situation. The vibes are cottage core creepy. And their fragile little existence is up ended by a visitor, the first they‘ve had in decades. The sisters‘ differences and annoyances are exacerbated by this new presence. Their mother‘s influence looms large, but what‘s going on outside the walls of the garden? Loved #tob26 longlist

BarbaraBB I keep thinking of this book! 1w

Good Dirt | Charmaine Wilkerson

Pickpick

Pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this. A dual narrative: one focused on Ebby, both present day and some of her past, and the other featuring an artifact from her ancestors—a jar. This object has great significance for her prominent black family and historical background…reaching back hundreds of years. A tragic loss at the beginning of the book is wound up in this object and we spend the whole book uncovering the secrets of both. More ⬇️

Chelsea.Poole I was bothered by a way too convenient coincidence and lack of communication, seems like the action could have taken place with another plot point. But I did like the storytelling, regardless. #ToB26 longlist title 1w

Confusing for the sake of it, which I try to give a chance, but this was definitely wrong book wrong time. The busy holiday season isn‘t great for puzzling happenings in fiction, at least for me & my befuddled brain. Anyhoo, twin sisters reunite after years of estrangement because one meets a woman who (either actually is or just looks like??) their long lost mother. It‘s a good set up and some memorable moments but I was happy when it was over.

Chelsea.Poole #tob26 shortlist. Maybe the judges will open up a whole new view for me with this book in their discussions. I hope. 1w
squirrelbrain Great review though! 1w
