The Director: A Novel | Daniel Kehlmann
post image
Mehso-so

Just after I posted that I didn‘t have access to this #ToB26 shortlist title, I found it on Libby with another library through which I have a card. Anyway, I listened to this one and loved the beginning. I was so in through the first half of this director‘s life and connections but the second half didn‘t work for me. I‘m also wondering if it‘s due to the audio and my hectic life around the holidays. I may revisit this in the future.

Vera‘s grandparents left Armenia after the massacre and started anew in Lebanon. Years later Vera and her parents leave for the US when the situation in Lebanon becomes too dangerous.
9/11 brings back memories of a family leaving so much behind, not just danger and war, but also family, friends and happy memories. A thought provoking book.

The Garden: A Novel | Nick Newman

#ToB26 #23

This is a very atmospheric and disturbing dystopian book about two sisters, living an isolated life in what mostly is a walled garden and what used to be the kitchen of the mansion they lived in before. A mansion that has been shut down for years because their mother wanted that. I was never quite sure of what happened, what was true and what not. The ending is vague too yet it was a very satisfying read for me.

Lesliereadsalot A very good story right? It would make a good movie! 2d
Bookwormjillk @Soubhiville I was thinking the same 2d

sarahbarnes I‘m glad you liked it! @Soubhiville it does have that feel. 2d
squirrelbrain Glad you enjoyed it! I‘m only about a third of the way through. 2d
Hooked_on_books Very interesting! This sounds like something I‘ll either really like or absolutely hate. 😂 I have it on hold at the library, so I‘ll get to see where I come down on it. 2d

#WeeklyForecast 51/25

I will hopefully read these three books during the holidays. Still a lot of #ToB26 to be read but also another installment in the Matilda Darke series, which I have been enjoying a lot.

TrishB Good plans 👍🏻 5d

The Ten Year Affair | Erin Somers

#ToB26 #22

Yes it‘s a book about a ten year affair but it‘s also not. And it is certainly not as predictable as you might suspect. To me it is much more a book about growing up and becoming a mother and leave the city where you were young and all seemed possible. I really liked it.

Hooked_on_books I liked this, too. I think anyone who has gone through phases in their life in growing up in relationships(which is everyone) has something to relate to in this. 6d
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books Yes it certain felt relatable at times. 6d
Lesliereadsalot Got this one coming up. So glad you liked it so I know I will too! 5d

ErikasMindfulShelf I‘ve read about half but have no desire to pick it back up. It‘s been a month since I stopped reading. 5d
AmyG I liked this one, too. I flew right through it. Yes @Hooked_on_books it was relatable in one way or another. (edited) 5d
merelybookish I have grown to like it more after reading it as it has stayed with me .Somehow it seems appropriate to me that her most interesting, complicated and honest relationship ended up being with another woman. 5d
BkClubCare Hoping to start this one today! But I also have Blob from the library, so... will see which grabs me. 5d
sarahbarnes I wasn‘t initially interested in this because it seemed obvious, but you‘re selling it for me. 5d
squirrelbrain Looking forward to getting to this (when it‘s published in January! 🙄) 5d
BarbaraBB @merelybookish So true. The affair - existing or not - was not what the book is about 5d
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes It‘s less obvious and I liked it but it‘s not a favorite of mine 5d
Cathythoughts Sounds good. Stacked 👍🏻❤️ 4d
youneverarrived I can‘t wait to read this. Love Switzerland 😍 4d

I liked this well enough but agree with Helen. I would have liked it to circle back to adult Vera for the conclusion. It was a quick, easy listen.

I picked this one up last summer and so would have read it regardless, but I‘m so glad #TOB26 nudged me to do so now, because I loved this one. From the unusual structure to the brilliant tonal shift at the narrative‘s peak to the slightly trippy cover, this was very much a book for me.

Lindy I really enjoyed Endling as well. 🐌 6d
sarahbarnes Really liked this one too. So creative. 6d

BarbaraBB I didn‘t like it as much but anyone O trust did so I feel I should reread it. 6d
squirrelbrain I thought it was great, although the ending was weaker than the rest of the book. 6d
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain I thought the ending really worked. I think the ending for the women fit the situation they were in and the absurdism of the ending for Pasha fit much of the tone of the book. It‘s different, so I can see it not working for everyone. 6d
merelybookish I went in expecting to LOVE this book which probably set it up to disappoint me. I liked it but I felt it dragged in the middle. That said, I appreciate any book that challenges typical narrative structure! 5d

We Do Not Part | Han Kang

This book was haunting and just short enough so that the confusion of not knowing exactly what was going on didn‘t make me want to quit. It touched on the generational trauma of the Jeju massacre, which is something the world doesn‘t know enough about. Grateful for books that share hidden history. #TOB26

Bookwormjillk @squirrelbrain I think I almost do too after studying some reviews. I might re-read it at some point. 6d

⭐️⭐️ My first from the #ToB26 shortlist, and it‘s a no from me. It started off a little reminiscent of All Fours in that a middle aged lady is having a narcissistic midlife crisis and making questionable decisions that make me not like her at all. Then it sort of morphed into something less interesting and more self indulgent on the author‘s part. I was going to give it a so-so but realized I actually kind of hated it. 🤷‍♀️

monalyisha Well, I *was* interested in reading this. But I don‘t know if I can handle something MORE self-indulgent than All Fours. 🙈😂 7d
fredthemoose @monalyisha I don‘t think it was more self indulgent than All Fours—the second half became less like All Fours in that it was less about the MC being a destructive narcissist, but I found the second half self indulgent on the author‘s part. Meandered all over and lots of breaking the 4th wall with “if this was a tragedy it would go like this…” I couldn‘t wait to be done. 7d
fredthemoose @monalyisha more self indulgent than All Fours would be a real feat… 😂 7d
monalyisha @fredthemoose I was impressed! Or frightened. It‘s hard to tell. 7d
BarbaraBB I didn‘t think of All Fours when reading it, but I get your comparison. I liked both books 😀 but reading your review I understand why you didn‘t. 7d
