The New York Times bestseller- "A beautifully written, thought-provoking novel." -#1 New York Times bestselling author Kathryn Stockett. In 1940, Iris James is the postmistress in coastal Franklin, Massachusetts. Iris knows more about the townspeople than she will ever say, and believes her job is to deliver secrets. Yet one day she does the unthinkable: slips a letter into her pocket, reads it, and doesn't deliver it. Meanwhile, Frankie Bard broadcasts from overseas with Edward R. Murrow. Her dispatches beg listeners to pay heed as the Nazis bomb London nightly. Most of the townspeople of Franklin think the war can't touch them. But both Iris and Frankie know better... The Postmistress is a tale of two worlds-one shattered by violence, the other willfully nave-and of two women whose job is to deliver the news, yet who find themselves unable to do so. Through their eyes, and the eyes of everyday people caught in history's tide, it examines how stories are told, and how the fact of war is borne even through everyday life. Watch a Video

Bailedbailed

I feel so guilty lately for bailing on so many books this year. I think I'm in a reading slump. I've noticed that when a new library hold comes in for the Alex Cross series by James Patterson, I get super excited and then incredibly bummed when I can't read the next book. But anyway, I bailed on Blake's book. #imsorry

SaturnDoo Although I liked this book, it's totally ok to bail on something you aren't enjoying. Reading slumps happen to all of us, I just recovered from one myself. Just keep reading whatever is making you happy. 🤗❤ Maybe the books you are bailing on right now, may peak your interest again when the mood is right. Good luck to you. 7mo
Sweettartlaura I have a higher number of DNFs this year already than any before. But I feel less & less guilt about it: the more I read, the better I am at discerning what works for me. Feel no guilt - life‘s too short to read boring books 😉 7mo
WorldsOkayestStepMom @Sweettartlaura truth!!! I'm trying to learn to be more gentle on myself and this is a great first step! 7mo

WorldsOkayestStepMom @SaturnDoo 💖💖💖 you're so right! I get it in my head that if I didn't like something once I never will again. But I've proven myself wrong on that theory so many times! 😂😂😂 7mo
Weaponxgirl @Sweettartlaura same here! I now have a good sense for if it‘s a book I‘m just finding challenging and will get something out of at the end or if it just isn‘t for me or if I‘m in the wrong mood. 7mo
Weaponxgirl Never feel guilty for bailing if it isn‘t working it isn‘t working, they can‘t all be winners and the only way we find out is to try them out. 7mo

I‘ve had this book on my shelves for almost 9 yrs, & it finally called to me. A WWII novel which takes place in 1940 and 1941, before the U.S. enters the war. We follow a few characters in a small Cape Cod town, including the titular character, as well as an American female war correspondent reporting on the Blitz in London. Their lives intertwine in unexpected ways. Explores themes of duty and loyalty, & whether one trumps the other.

I run a community book club at the school where I teach. It's for students, parents, grand-parents, siblings, alumni, staff or anyone connected to our school. Tonight a parent gave me three file boxes of books for my classroom. Actually, one box will go to my classroom and two will go to the used bookstore. I'll get credit and buy books my students will actually read. These are ones I've pulled out to read before they go on my classroom shelves.

Sills I love this idea I'm always looking for ways to share books and inspire my students and families to read. What grade do you teach? 2y

Mehso-so

This story was a parallel view of 3 different women's experience during WWII, A reporter, the postmaster and the wife of a doctor who went to Europe to support the cause. Sadly, I found this story to be meh... While I enjoyed the reporter's part, especially her experience around the plight of refugees and victims, everything else fell flat for me. the title was based on the postmaster character, but I felt her character was the least developed.

I'm really enjoying this book so far but it changes POV so much my head is spinning. In every writing class I've ever taken it was hammered into me to never change POV without a scene break. This is really allowed? 😳 I'm kind of shocked. I've seen it in other books but it's subtle, or at least every few pages. This one changes every other sentence. Someone talk me off the ledge here... #sayitisntso #writingrules

I love writing but fear this past year I lost the reader in me. I mean, the deep down, true book geek I've always been. I miss her. I went to the library today and strolled. I can't remember the last time I was so content and happy. Came home with these gems (thanks to all of you for recommending them 🙂). I vow in 2017 to be a reader again. And not just to learn to be a better writer, but to get lost in words and worlds like I used to...
