AnneCecilie Thinking about it after reading them all one after another, I feel that in a way they‘re all one book. The first has the dissolution of the monasteries and over the next books we see how “normal” peoples situation decreases and in the end there‘s no other option than revolt. When you have nothing left to loose, you‘ll fight for you betterment (edited) 3w

dabbe @AnneCecilie You bring up an excellent point. I can't help but wonder if Sansom had lived, how he would have carried this series forward. Would he have seen Shardlake through to his older years? To Queen Elizabeth being on the throne? Sad that we'll never know. 💔 (edited) 3w

AnneCecilie I‘m not sure, most crime series ends after 8 or 10 books, but I would have loved one final case with all three. I loved the dynamic between them in earlier books. Something was missing for me when Barak wasn‘t in them as much. I always thought Shardlake retired and moved out of the city, most have mixed that up with one of the earlier books when I talks about his dead. 3w

lil1inblue Looking back, I think Dark Fire (we meet Barak!) and Heartstone were my favorites. Tombland is my least favorite, though still a low pick. I did read somewhere online that he did want to continue the series through Elizabeth becoming Queen. I think a novel set when Mary was Queen would have been fascinating (a total flip on the religious stuff). 3w

Mollyanna I enjoyed all of them but Dark Fire was my favorite by far. We meet Barak, still have Cromwell around manipulating things, Richard Rich kind of in his place…. Plus I am fascinated by Greek fire and the potential of it. 3w

•THE MYSTERY OF THE BLUE TRAIN: Agatha Christie (last month's #christiecapers read)
•CARMILLA : J. Sheridan Le Fanu (a precursor by 25 years to DRACULA).

I hope to get both finished by the end of this readathon.

Cuilin I grew up in the Irish/Celtic mythology tradition. I don‘t think I fully understood it as a child. It was just fun stories. Now as an adult I‘m embracing the feminine power of the Brehon laws and the tuatha dé Danann. 2mo

TheBookHippie I grew up with dark fairytales and folklore and BabaYaga. I always preferred it as it was realistic and truth. Disney Princess HEA has always not appealed to me, at all. I find it demeaning to women and I feel it weakens them. It‘s a tool of the patriarchy in my opinion. 2mo

dabbe I was all in for the fairy tales with the HEA's. My parents divorced when I was 10, so I was always chasing down a male, authoritative figure--even though my mom was trying to teach me otherwise. Then, Mr. Gailo gave us Edith Hamilton's MYTHOLOGY book, and my eyes 👀 out of my socket. Such brutality! Such female wusses and bas-asses! It was then Disney no more but GRIMM'S FAIRY TALES for me. The grimmer, the better. 2mo

Chrissyreadit @Cuilin I also love Celtic mythology! and @dabbe i grew up on the blue fairy book and green fairy book and grimes fairy tales. I was the mom who did not embrace Disney- and my daughter struggled by her limited engagement in pop culture. but i really was frustrated by how princesses were always the main character and everything was to get a prince. and the mother always died- and the stepmother was always cruel… 2mo

TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit I like the colors fairy books too. My daughter only liked Lion King and then Hunchback of Notre Dame Disney of all things .. I didn‘t promote it either. She adored Pooh mostly. 2mo

ElizaMarie When I read this prompt, I initially thought of La Llorona. I know this book is going to have a part in this story - I am eager to read. Initially, it just scared me. She kills kids! But now, I feel like the kids weren't children per se, but more of an extension of herself. I feel sorrow for her, anger for her pain. Also, grew up with stories about Santa Muerte and how mainstream media misunderstands our flaca. 2mo

ElizaMarie @TheBookHippie Although I liked Disney, I didn't aspire to be the princess. I was always drawn to the villains, their story, their history. My favorite Disney movie was Alice in Wonderland, which didn't have the girl-lives-for-guy aspect of it. I agree, I felt the whole “your only worth is a man to love“ really hurt girls. 2mo

AnnCrystal 👏🏼🐝👍🏼🍫😋🐝💝...I believe the difference is that US makes chocolate extra, extra sweet compared to Europeans. At least, this is what I've been told.

My ancestral world made a chocolate drink from cacao paste, water, and chili peppers. Sometimes spices and herbs like vanilla, allspice, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper were added (depending on tribe). This was drank cold. I really want to try this one day...I just haven't had the nerve. 3mo

AnnCrystal You can try Sprouts or Worlds Market (are they still around ?? ). They should have worldwide options available.

Years ago, I tried real liquorice (the kind made from the root) from an Australian company. And my mom favorited these butter cookies from Norway. Both came from World's Market before we realized that is was eco-green to support locally made. 3mo
