Blackbird House | Alice Hoffman

With incantatory prose that sweeps over the reader like a dream, (Philadelphia Inquirer), Hoffman follows her celebrated bestseller The Probable Future, with an evocative work that traces the lives of the various occupants of an old Massachusetts house over a span of two hundred years. In a rare and gorgeous departure, beloved novelist Alice Hoffman weaves a web of tales, all set in Blackbird House. This small farm on the outer reaches of Cape Cod is a place that is as bewitching and alive as the characters we meet: Violet, a brilliant girl who is in love with books and with a man destined to betray her; Lysander Wynn, attacked by a halibut as big as a horse, certain that his life is ruined until a boarder wearing red boots arrives to change everything; Maya Cooper, who does not understand the true meaning of the love between her mother and father until it is nearly too late. From the time of the British occupation of Massachusetts to our own modern world, family after familys lives are inexorably changed, not only by the people they love but by the lives they lead inside Blackbird House. These interconnected narratives are as intelligent as they are haunting, as luminous as they are unusual. Inside Blackbird House more than a dozen men and women learn how love transforms us and how it is the one lasting element in our lives. The past both dissipates and remains contained inside the rooms of Blackbird House, where there are terrible secrets, inspired beauty, and, above all else, a spirit of coming home. From the writer Time has said tells "truths powerful enough to break a readers heart comes a glorious travelogue through time and fate, through loss and love and survival. Welcome to Blackbird House.

One more, probably my last for September‘s #aam.
This is a cute collection of short stories revolving around a cottage and its various inhabitants over several generations. Really sweet and the audiobook was only about 6hrs but I found myself less interested as Hoffman brought the stories closer to modern times. Some of the enchantment was lost for me with the last few chapters. Still recommend 3.75🌟

Now to finish that other blackbird tale…

#AuthorAMonth I enjoyed this short interconnected novel revolving around a house by the sea. Each chapter focuses on a new inhabitant, some are descendants others are newcomers. Each chapter is richly crafted & written with Hoffman‘s tender prose and skillful style. It‘s a quick listen, read by numerous narrators, which made this book really enjoyable. #AudiblePlus perfect for a Fall day 🧡

I wasn‘t going to pick up an Alice Hoffman this month @Soubhiville but than I saw this audio in my Audible library and thought, why not?!?!! I‘m REALLY enjoying this interconnected short story collection 💕Multicast narration and really good stories so far. Each character that resides in the Blackbird House is whimsical and compelling. Alice Hoffman is a truly gifted writer and storyteller 🙌🏻 Solid companion for running errands today 😁

MidnightBookGirl Hoffman can be a bit hit or miss for me, but I love her Owens family series, and this cover is calling to me. Plus I love short stories! 5mo
Cinfhen I‘m loving it @MidnightBookGirl I should say each chapter is a glimpse of an inhabitant that lives in a house by the sea for over 20O years. The stories are linked by the house, the mysterious blackbirds that live outside the house and some inhabitants are relatives of the original owner. It‘s short and it‘s a multicast narration, which I love ❤️ it‘s free from #AudiblePlus 🎧🙌🏻 5mo

I am so sad! The writing is beautiful, the story is fanciful and emotional... There really aren't many reasons for me to bail on this book except that it just isn't quite my cup of tea.

Traveling a lot to see my grandchildren, I don‘t stay over anymore due to covid and I am working so we wear masks and stay outside , my daughter is pregnant with her third a little girl this time💖
So I am not usually an audio person but it‘s great on these rides. Loved this book what a wonderful string of stories all set around a small farm house near Cape cod over the coarse of two hundred years, beautiful prose and stories of loss and love

Loved it! I really enjoyed the format of how each story was seperate but still tied to each one and some of the characters carried over.

myellenbee I'll have to check it out. I love short story cycles and Alice Hoffman, sounds like a good combination. 1y

No, I haven‘t read Atonement or seen the film and I don‘t know how or why 🤷‍♀️

Scochrane26 I just read Atonement a couple of years ago & haven‘t watched the movie. The book takes awhile to get into (or it did for me), but it‘s good. 2y
ElaineR The film of Atonement was rather wonderful but never read the book (I tend to either hate or love Ian McEwan books so scared to try 😕, don't get me started on On Chesil Beach 😡). If nobody speaks of remarkable things was not really for me. The Alice Hoffman sounds really good actually. Nice haul. 2y
TrishB @Scochrane26 @ElaineR I‘ll keep my fingers crossed 🤞🏻🤞🏻 2y

TheLudicReader I love Atonement. My son and I just had a big talk about it yesterday because he read it in AP English a couple years ago and calls it "the most well constructed book" he's ever read. I call it a gut punch. 2y
BarbaraBB I loved the McGregor. I have given it to everybody for a while. But that was ages ago. I am curious to see what you think and if it‘s still such a great read. 2y

KarenUK @cinfhen 😂😂😂! BFF status in tact! 2y
KarenUK But I agree with @LeahBergen ... I do hope you love Atonement! (And the movie really is a wonderful adaptation, whatever Cindy says!) 😂 2y

I really like the way Alice Hoffman writes. Her stories tend to be a little bit too tinged with sadness for my liking, but they are haunting and melancholy in a beautiful, poetic way. This set of short stories centers around one house – Blackbird House – across the span of many decades. I enjoy that common thread through her stories. Sometimes the stories end abruptly and leave the reader hanging. I didn‘t feel strongly compelled to keep reading.

Cinfhen I tend to LOVE her historical fiction, not so much her magical realism. I really liked 3y
TNbooklover66 Pretty cover. What ereader are you using that has such pretty color covers? 3y

#BookNLunch! A great way to use up last night‘s leftover mango rice and veggies. Added an egg, some sesame oil, and turned it into a delicious fried rice dish! This has been another production of #MrBookBookBabeKitchen. Happy reads & happy eats!

My friend asked me to #buddyread this book with her. She said it‘s a great summer read. Do you agree?

I enjoyed this little book so much. It's a series of stories all connected and surrounding a small New England farm from the 18th century through present day. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Quirkybookworm I‘m afraid to purchase this one due to her books being a hit or miss mess! Lol 4y
toofondofbooks @Quirkybookworm I really enjoyed it. I also listened to the audiobook which was narrated by lots of diff authors. It's really like a collection of short stories, but they are all related and about this one home/farm and its owners through generations. 4y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I listened to this on audio and I'm so glad I did. The 11 narrators brought each interwoven chapter/story about a house/land in New England to life across 11 time periods generations. Fantastic.

I wasn't afraid. I had read the Odyssey and I knew there was no way to escape your own fate. I knew that every monster had a beating heart, even those with scales, even those with flame-hot breath that could light the eelgrass on fire, even those whose faces were too terrible to see.

Lovely interwoven vignettes, following the lives two centuries of residents of the same small farmhouse on the outer edge of Cape Cod. Hoffman's prose is as lyrical as ever, with hints of magic underlying the everyday.
