Complete Cartoons of The New Yorker
Complete Cartoons of The New Yorker | Robert Mankoff
19 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
The book that Janet Maslin of The New York Times has called "indispensable" and "a transfixing study of American mores and manners that happens to incorporate boundless laughs, too" is finally available in paperbackfully updated and featuring a brand new introduction by Adam Gopnik. Organized by decade, with commentary by some of the magazine's finest writers, this landmark collection showcases the work of the hundreds of talented artists who have contributed cartoons over the course ofThe New Yorker's eight-two-year history. From the early cartoons of Peter Arno, George Price and Charles Addams to the cutting-edge work of Alex Gregory, Matthew Diffee and Bruce Eric Kaplan (with stops along the way for the genius of Charles Barsotti, Roz Chast, Jack Ziegler, George Booth, and many others), the art collected here forms, as David Remnick puts it in his Foreword, "the longest-running popular comic genre in American life." Throughout the book, brief overviews of each era's predominant themesfrom the Depression and nudity to technology and the Internet, highlight various genres of cartoons and shed light on our pastimes and preoccupations. Brief profiles and mini-portfolios spotlight the work of key cartoonists, including Arno, Chast, Ziegler, and others. The DVD-ROM included with the book is what really makes the "Complete Cartoons" complete. Compatible with most home computers and easily browsable, the disk contains a mind-boggling 70,363 cartoons, indexed in a variety of ways. Perhaps you'd like to find all the cartoons by your favorite artist. Or maybe you'd like to look up the cartoons that ran the week you were born, or all of the cartoons on a particular subject. Of course, you can always begin at the beginning, February 21, 1925, and experience the unprecedented pleasure of reading through every single cartoon ever published in The New Yorker. Enjoy this one-of-a-kind protrait of American life over the past eight decades, as captured by the talented pens and singular outlooks of the masters of the cartoonist's art.

An early Charles Addams .Since he does so many people I guess is why this stood out .Flipping through the first anthology of New Yorker cartoons published in 1950.

#oversizedbook #riotgrams published in 2004 , this beast is 11 and a fourth inches wide 13 and and a fourth inches tall .And of course the name complete is obsolete since the New Yorker is still published . Yes, I love the political articles , the poems , the fiction, but anybody who won‘t admit they skim for the cartoons first is probably fibbing.😄

Suet624 I cut out the cartoons and tape them on the envelopes of letters to my friends. 😁 6y

The New Yorker heard our cries last week & decided to bless us with some less visually scarring cover art this week!

How many of us have done this. #LitsyConfessions, let's here them. 😂😂

For my confession, I don't need to be on a treadmill to trip over my damn self from reading a book. Lots of people about a month ago thought I'd be catching Pokemon but my nose was buried in a book on my phone. 😂

moranadatter So I had to go look up last week's cover. *shudder* I tend to use audiobooks, which should be safer, but I may have fallen off a treadmill at the gym because my hand got caught in my headphones' cord. 8y
Broke_Girl_Reads @kmdartist you're not alone! Once I pulled my phone off onto the treadmill with me and it shot off and into the person behind me 😂 8y
Onioons He's no Sandra Bullock, is he 😊 8y

moranadatter @Broke_Girl_Reads Yikes! Was the other person okay? 8y
TheSloanRanger I always take my tablet to the gym. Half hour warm up on the bike goes a lot faster and seems to hurt less when I'm reading! 8y
JSW Currently on a treadmill 😂 8y
katedensen I do audiobooks on the treadmill :) 8y
Broke_Girl_Reads @kmdartist yes, thankfully they had good reflexes and were able to sort of catch it! 8y
JessieReadsInBK Loooove this cover! 8y

I can't win today. What the actual fuck is this The New Yorker?! I need to sleep tonight! 👸🏼

Does anybody have any eye masks I can borrow for the rest of the night so I don't run across anything else visually scarring?!

#FunFridayPhoto We currently don't have a coffee table - too many littles running around our house for that - but I still have my favorite coffee table books. I bought way too many of them when I worked at a bookstore years ago. It was tough to choose between my New Yorker book or my stack of Audrey Hepburn books. I went with the cartoons.
