House Across the Lake | Riley Sager
100 posts | 101 read | 1 reading | 51 to read
The New York Times bestselling author of Final Girls and Survive the Night ("a master of the twist and the turn"*) is back with his most unexpected thriller yet. *Rolling StoneCasey Fletcher, a recently widowed actress trying to escape a streak of bad press, has retreated to the peace and quiet of her family's lake house in Vermont. Armed with a pair of binoculars and several bottles of bourbon, she passes the time watching Tom and Katherine Royce, the glamorous couple living in the house across the lake. They make for good viewing--a tech innovator, Tom is rich, and a former model, Katherine is gorgeous. One day on the lake, Casey saves Katherine from drowning, and the two strike up a budding friendship. But the more they get to know each other--and the longer Casey watches--it becomes clear that Katherine and Tom's marriage isn't as perfect and placid as it appears. When Katherine suddenly vanishes, Casey becomes consumed with finding out what happened to her. In the process, she uncovers eerie, darker truths that turn a tale of voyeurism and suspicion into a story of guilt, obsession and how looks can be very deceiving. With his trademark blend of sharp characters, psychological suspense and gasp-worthy twists, Riley Sager's The House Across the Lake will shock readers until the very last page.

That was bat shit and banana pants crazy and I kind of loved it. The twist was totally unexpected and had me questioning Sager‘s sanity 😂😂 But it ended up working 🤷‍♀️

vivastory I know that some people dislike this one, but I loved it. Completely agree with you 👏 4mo
5feet.of.fury The twist in this one was very decisive, but I also really liked it. 4mo
CBee @vivastory I saw that you loved it too! The last one I read by Sager wasn‘t great (Survive the Night) so I wasn‘t sure what to expect, but I loved it 😂🤪 4mo
CBee @5feet.of.fury when the twist happened, I was like, wait what? But I was invested enough to keep going and I‘m glad I did 👏🏻👏🏻 4mo

If you‘re looking for a thriller where you won‘t be able to guess the twists and ending, you‘ve found it. There‘s left field and then there‘s switching sports entirely. While it was a decent read, the major shift is so out of … context? Or … idk… just out there that it‘s like you picked up a different book.

This book was everything I thought it would be….but with a twist? Enjoyed it!!!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️ three stars because the ending was kind of all over the place….imagine there being two possible endings to a book…only to discover both possibilities are correct?

Not my favorite Sager book, but will make for a good book club discussion.

I also didn‘t care for the narrator so if this book interests you I recommend the print.

This took a weirdly unexpected turn, and I am really impressed that the author managed to pull it off, but the novel worked.

I recommend the audio book on this one. The narrator is Bernadette Dunne, and she's got a great voice.

If a book is going to have magical realism, I like to know from the outset. Throwing it in at the end like that felt… well, sort of ridiculous. I genuinely didn‘t care about any of the characters after that point. I just wanted to finish. It was fine up to that point. If I‘d known magical realism was a component from the beginning, it would‘ve been fine.

Happy Sunday! Wow! Did not see that ending coming! Was a bit down as I thought I had figured out the mystery fairly early on. Couldn‘t have been more wrong had a I tried! LoL I wasn‘t overly fond of Sager‘s previous two books but this one more than made up for it. Nothing like good mystery/thriller and hot chocolate on a chilly rainy Sunday. Florida can‘t decide which season we‘re having. #Sundayfunday

It's not my favorite of his, but ok. A solid 3 🌟 . A widowed actress with a drinking problem is banished to the lake house to straighten herself out and get out of the spotlight. She does anything but stay out of trouble. Rear Window vibes as she spies on her famous neighbors across the lake. A typical Sager thriller with a touch of paranormal.

Joined a book club that has 80 people so this book has been on hold for several weeks. Should take me 3-4 days to read this and our first meeting is on Feb 15. I do not like book clubs but a friend asked me. We‘ll see how I like it (the book club I mean) lol. My poor friend bought the book on kindle, she got tired of waiting.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Let me know how you like it (book club) I‘m going to my first one February 28th!! 1y
Ladygodiva7 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Sure I‘ll let you know, “it‘s at a bar and while discussing the book, also playing a few fun games with prizes and enjoying an optional book themed cocktail/mocktail for $5 or less!” 1y
Ladygodiva7 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks the book club was fun, funny talking about the book and the WEIRD turn of events in that book. Might do it again next month 🙃 1y

The first chapter immediately has you raising questions and eyebrows. This book seemed promising!

Thinking okay. This is a pretty good storyline about a serial killer we are trying to identify. Only for it to get super weird at the last 100 or so pages turning into a almost paranormal thriller?

Loved the storyline up until that point, then I thought I lost interest and that killed the vibe of the book for me.

MMFinck Agreed. If a book is going to have magical realism, I like to know from the outset. Throwing it in at the end like that felt… ridiculous, if I‘m being honest. 9mo

I visited my parents this weekend and my dad and I spent a while geeking out over books. I really appreciate that my dad is such an avid reader and we find it fun to share mysteries and thrillers with each other. This time, I borrowed this bunch. Any suggestions of where to start?

Amusingly, there were 3 books I thought of borrowing first until- thanks to Litsy- I saw I‘d already read them. 🙄 I do that a lot! 😋

I loved it. So hard. Not Survive the Night hard but close. Casey Fletcher, widow and problematic drinker has been sent to her family‘s lake house to recoup/detox after the death of her husband. She saves the life of her model neighbour who is stuck in an unhappy marriage. Model neighbour disappears. Casey keeps drinking and makes questionable decisions. I thought I had figured out the twist but had not.

5feet.of.fury This was one of my fave Sager‘s & was one of my fave books from last year! I loved the twists. 1y

#12booksof2022
On the 9th day of Christmas I pick The House Across the Lake for my #September2022 best book.
I am a big fan of Sager and this book did not disappoint. It went off the rails towards the end in the mist delightfully unhinged way. So much fun to read.

I know it's an #unpopularopinion but I LOVED this one when I read it in July & all of you haters won't make me change my mind. 😝 Sager has flirted with supernatural elements in all of his previous books, but at the end he has always had a rational explanation for them. HATL was exactly what I have been wanting him to do for a few books now.
@andrew65

Leftcoastzen I read it the same month you did ! Liked it a lot , when the supernatural crept in , I was like ,hey, wait a minute, but I think he made it work. 1y
vivastory @Leftcoastzen I completely bought it. I wouldn't nec want it to become a staple for him but I think that he did a good job & it made the rest of the story make sense 1y
batsy I love this! This is how I felt about Cormac McCarthy's The Passenger; haters can't make me hate 😆 I need to give Sager a try! 1y
vivastory @batsy My aunt gifted me The Passenger a couple of weeks ago. I'm really looking forward to it! I have heard wildly mixed things. Are you planning on reading Stella Maris soon? 1y
batsy @vivastory Yes, I am! I've placed a hold at the library. That's a cool gift from your aunt 🙂 Have you read some of his others and are there any that stand out? The Passenger was my first time reading him. 1y
vivastory @batsy The only other one I have read is The Road, it's actually probably one of my favorites I've read of the past few years. I have a few on my shelves though. I have high hopes for them, especially Blood Meridian. 1y
batsy @vivastory The Road seems to be a popular choice! That's probably going to be my next one after Stella Maris. 1y

Hello little photo bomber...Pretty sure if Yoshi could read, he would agree this plot was bonkers (as the author said himself). It was a quick read. A bit repetitive at times. You definitely don't see this ending coming.

This was Sager‘s most “Goosebumps for Grownups” yet but the ‘twist‘ made me want to bail entirely. I didnt - bc I hoped he‘d redeem this wonky plot that read more like two very different books with more than a few plot holes. He didn‘t. I can only suspend disbelief so far. This is his worst novel by far (and I‘ve read all of them).

5feet.of.fury Survive the Night was the toughest for me, but I can understand your POV on this one 😂 1y

Riley definitely writes very entertaining books, that‘s for sure! This was a fun read with twists I never saw coming. One of the only complaints I have was the repetition. Like we get it, the character is an alcoholic, we don‘t need a new drink every page. Lol it got kind of annoying after a while. Other than that tho, I really enjoyed this one!

BookwormAHN I agree, I got rather tired of that myself 😸 2y

This book would be another hit for me (cause I love Riley Sager), if it weren‘t for that random twist. I can get behind the whole, entire plot and what happened but for that one thing that just ruined it for me. Don‘t get me wrong, I understand why it happened but there are more creative ways (or not as creative) to get from point a to b. Other than that, I loved the book.

A modern update of Rear Window about an alcoholic actress grieving the loss of her husband who drowned in the lake at their vacation home. Naturally she takes refuge there and starts to spy on her neighbors.
A suspenseful page turner with plenty of twists and turns(one of which annoyingly appears out of the blue) that will keep you guessing until the end.

🎧 📚 If this book didn‘t go completely off the rails in the final 2 hours I might have DNF‘d it.

It might be the best Sager book (I‘ve read them all).

The MC had just the right amount of snark for the 1st 1/2 of the book but around 72% I‘d had enough & was looking forward to her death.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👇🏻👇🏻

Twainy The MCs flaw that needs to be beat is made light of, justified & by the end of the book a supernatural aspect vies with her flaw recovery for Top billing.

So how do I rate this roller coaster of a story? It made me hate it and love it … the only negative is how the MCs flaw is handled.
