Husband Material | Alexis Hall
Wanted: One (very real) husband Nowhere near perfect but desperately trying his best In BOYFRIEND MATERIAL, Luc and Oliver met, pretended to fall in love, fell in love for real, dealt with heartbreak and disappointment and family and friends...and somehow figured out a way to make it work. Now it seems like everyone around them is getting married, and Luc's feeling the social pressure to propose. But it'll take more than four weddings, a funeral, and a bowl full of special curry to get these two from I don't know what I'm doing to I do. Good thing Oliver is such perfect HUSBAND MATERIAL. This book is every bit as snarky, heartwarming, and hilarious as the first one. I also loved the homage to Four Weddings and a Funeral.

I‘m having mixed feelings about the end. I‘m definitely leaning toward positive feelings. But I think I need to reread this one down the line to sort those feelings. Ultimately, here‘s what I came away with:

*This book made me laugh a lot.
*It made me smile even more
*And it left me thinking.

Any more details than that feel like spoilers. And if you want those spoiler details, I‘m happy to chat about them in the comments with spoiler settings.

julesG I agree to your three points. It made me think, too. And laugh! 2d

I…..do not know what to think. I quite enjoyed most of the book, but the ending really threw me. The banter and the wit was great, and I loved revisiting the lively characters, but I was a wee bit disappointed in the ending.

Preorder Swag! Particularly loved the adorable tea tin. Also it has autographed book plate sticker and Activity Book filled with quiz, puzzles, scrambles, etc.

As for the book: My most anticipated books of summer. Few days before release, I saw 2 Star Review of ARC from someone whose opinion I trust. Then I saw that it was a riff of 4 Weddings & a Funeral, so I guessed how the story would end. So I was expecting the worst. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig For the most part I really enjoyed. Even when characters relapsed into bad behaviors. Alexis Hall said he want to write about the after, which isn't done much in Romance. ⬇️ 1w
Crinoline_Laphroaig Reality is people have set backs. Long term relationships aren't all sunshine and roses. That being said the arguing over the Rainbow Balloon Arch and what it stood for got tiresome. Anyone in a long term relationship will tell you, that you have to learn to compromise. Also there was never any discussion of the Big Things: Children, House or Apartment, Life Goals, etc.
⬇️
1w
Crinoline_Laphroaig I didn't expect Luc & Oliver to get married, I know how 4 Weddings & a Funeral ends. But at the end of Ch 39 everything seems to have been resolved, and then BOOM, they both suddenly change their minds. Especially Oliver? It just comes out of the blue. And the thing is I totally get what he is saying about marriage. If this conversation had come a bit earlier in the book it would have worked for me. Putting it in the last 20 pages was jarring. 1w
Crinoline_Laphroaig
I'm fairly generous when it comes to stars. This was definitely more than 3 for me but not a solid 4. There so much I liked in this book. I literally cheered during the Funeral Section. And I love Luc's mom she is such great example of how to parent a grown child.

⬇️
1w
Crinoline_Laphroaig This felt like it needed a To Be Continued at the End. My rating would have been lower if I hadn't know there is going to be a Book 3. And since we are talking RomCom's I'm reminded of that Scene from Love Actually when the say the fate of the party hangs on the next song. The fate of this book hangs on the outcome of the next. 1w

Oh, I just loved this gorgeous, funny, warm-hearted romcom! And I thought it handled the dysfunctional family situation (very like one I‘ve been involved in) and the issues that arise from it incredibly well. It‘s a refreshing change for the conflict in a romance to arise from genuine differences in experience, personality & outlook and have it discussed as dealt with like adults (well, for the most part). #romantsy

Nutmegnc I was laughing by page 2! 2w
sherri Ooh! I keep seeing this one but your mention about genuine differences and handling things mostly like adults has sold me. Stacked! 2w
CarolynM @sherri 🙂 But you will need to read Boyfriend Material first, where there is less maturity on display. 2w

I've never read a more frustrating book in my life omg I probably have a 100 new white hairs, I'm so glad I don't want to get married bc THE DRAMA. It's been two years since BM and everyone around Luke, friends and exes, are getting married. His big 🧠 idea? Maybe it's time for him and Oliver to get married too but as they start to plan, they both start to see some of the worst parts of each other. Great banter, growth, domesticity, and surprises

4/5

This was every bit as fun to read as Boyfriend Material. Luc and Oliver are two years into the relationship and surrounded by friends and exes getting married. I enjoyed seeing the growth of both characters. I found the ending very satisfying, even if I wish there had been an epilogue.

#ARCAugust

Started today and so far it's been interesting, I'm actually not sure how I feel about it. There's a lot of the stuff I still lived in book one, but I feel like I'm not sure where I'm going. I mean, I hope it's going to where I think it is but there's just been so much action that I was surprised when I saw I was only just over the 30% mark #augustARC #queer #gay

Sweet, funny. As good as book 1. Luc and Oliver are still growing together despite the wacky situations. So many weddings. The inner insecurities, friends and families all contribute to make their journey to happiness an entertaining read. ☂️

Happy Book-Birthday! 🎉

The sequel to Boyfriend Material is not just as good as the first book, it's better. Knowing the characters already, it's seeing them grow and struggle and overcome obstacles so much better. There were lots of LOL moments for me.

My thoughts about the ending are in the comments under the spoiler tag.

#ARC #NetGalley #MountARC

julesG The structure of the book follows that of a well-known British rom-com film. It made the ending obvious, but it's the best ending for Oliver and Luc. 2w
CarolynM Currently reading 😀 I‘ll come back to you spoiler comment when I‘ve finished. 2w
writerlibrarian I'm passed 50%. It's really, really funny. 2w
CarolynM Just finished. Loved it of course. I agree about the end and it fits with what AH has said about his own world view, which I think is why it feels so right. 2w

Aw, man, this was exactly what I needed. I laughed my arse off. I delighted in all the romcom references. (See spoiler tag below for one Thing, though.) I got the most massive kick out of revisiting all these characters and seeing how they‘ve grown since BOYFRIEND MATERIAL. And I had absolutely HEAPS of emotions about it all, because this book is both hilarious and thoughtful about relationship trajectories and queer identity and tough families.

xicanti Now, a spoiler that‘s really only a spoiler if you‘ve seen the movie in question: 3w
xicanti the biggest reference totally gives the ending away, but the HOW is the kicker here, and Alexis Hall delivers a GREAT how. Which is clever and referential in itself, really, since the reader also knows where any given romance will end but not HOW the characters get there. So, even if you‘re all, “This is the same structure as that one movie, so obvs they‘re gonna go there,” you can still squee over the very Luc-and-Oliver way they get there. 3w
julesG It was obvious, but so well executed. Really liked how Hall made it Luc&Oliver-esque 2w

‘Tis only right and proper to eat scones while one laugh‘s one‘s arse off/has deep emotions at a very British romcom.

Y‘all know I always wonder if direct romance sequels will pull it off, and so far this one delivers. It pushes everyone in new directions and references a ton of film roms, com and otherwise, while it does so. I‘m hooked.

The 5-Part structure recalls FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL, too; hopefully sans funeral. I like these people.

Huge fan of Boyfriend Material. In this sequel, we see Lucien and Oliver going strong for two years while their friend group moves on to marriage and families. As the couple evaluate their commitment to one another to decide the meaning of 'marriage', both still must deal with their lives, careers, and daddy issues before figure out if the either want to become 'husbands.'
