#20series20days #top20series - day 3

My number 1 favorite mystery. Malla Nunn should be far more popular than she is. Nunn gives readers a detailed understanding of apartheid South African society, across all race classes and social strata, while displaying masterful layering of clues and phenomenal skill in characterization. One of those books where at the end all the pieces just fall into place and you can't believe you didn't see it before.

MsMelissa I‘m so glad to read this. I‘m not sure how many books there are in the series, but I have the first three ready to go. I must make a point of reading book one soon. 4y
EadieB I own 2 of these books and need to read them soon. 4y
ErinSBecker The first was phenomenal. The second was pretty weak in my opinion, but 3 and 4 were very good again 4y
ErinSBecker Only 4 in the series so far. I don't know if she's continuing it or moving on to other things. 4y

Any ongoing #buddyreads I can join? I'm currently reading A Beautiful Place to Die and on a reading African Authors challenge, but I'm up for anything that's not too depressing.

runswithscissors007 Hello and welcome! (I‘m sort of new here too). I think there is a catch all #. Where you might find something! #litsyhappenings 4y
runswithscissors007 @TheBookHippie does a BOTM Buddy read. I think it is The Whisper Network currently. If you are looking for complete escapism and fluff there are a bunch of us reading one Anne of Green Gables a month. #heycarrots. There must be more but I‘m pretty new too. 😬😬 4y

shortsarahrose There is currently #PotterADay readalong where we read a chapter of Harry Potter each day. @Linsy organized it (there is a schedule on her page). Currently in the middle of Goblet of Fire. 4y
Tracyantoon Welcome! I just joined Litsy a few months ago and love it so far!! Another buddy read is #OverBookedClub run by @megnews and @sblbooks. This month is #YAApril so they are reading a YA book (tagged). 4y
Eggs Welcome to Litsy 🥳🎈🥳 4y
ErinSBecker @runswithscissors007 @Tracyantoon Thanks both! I love the Anne of Green Gables series and think I have most of them around here. I may join you on that one ☺️ 4y
ErinSBecker Another how to question - how can I follow a hashtag? Do I just need to search for it whenever I want to check in? 4y
Tracyantoon Yes. As far as I know that is the only way to follow a hashtag. Most recent will be first so just scroll if you need to go farther back. Hope that makes sense. The people here are very helpful so just ask if you aren‘t sure on something. 4y
ErinSBecker Thanks so much @Tracyantoon! 4y
ravenlee There‘s a readalong of Little Women, I think @TheAromaofBooks started that, too. #readinglittlewomen And I think @TheBookHippie is still doing a children‘s classic per month, is that right? 4y
TheAromaofBooks Yes, I am #ReadingLittleWomen right now - one chapter a day, and today's chapter is Chapter 14 - Secrets. So not too far along if you still want to join!! #HeyCarrots is being hosted by @Flingogal and @TheGirlWiththeLibraryBag - they are reading one Anne book per month & April's book is the 2nd in the series, Anne of Avonlea. There is also a group of us reading an Agatha Christie book every month in published order - #agathachristieclubr2 4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) & @ferskner usually will post some discussion questions around the end of the month. April's book is The Big Four. Those are the ones I can think of right off, although I'm sure there are more!! You can also follow @LitsyHappenings - they will post several updates a couple times a month with things that have been tagged, or you can search the #LitsyHappenings hashtag. 4y

Ok, so I've googled and hashtagged searched, but no dice. Can someone please tell me what a #bookspin is and how I can do it?

UwannaPublishme Check most recent #BookSpin posts here by @TheAromaofBooks. You‘ll get all the details there. Hope you join the fun! 4y
Foxyfictionista #bookspin is a way to get through your tbr stack. You basically number each book (it's best to have at least 20). Once a month @TheAromaofBooks randomly chooses a number between 1-20 and we all read the book that we numbered accordingly. I think she also does a second and maybe even a third number for those who want to participate. I only ever do one number but it's fun. Tag her and she'll put you on her list. 4y
TheAromaofBooks Hello!! @UwannaPublishme & @Foxyfictionista are spot-on! #bookspin is just a lil challenge I came up w/ to help people get thru the books they already want to read. Anyone can join by making their list of 20 books & tagging me. People tag me when they review their books & each review counts as an entry towards a giveaway I'm hoping to have at the end of the year. I draw the number on the 2nd of every month. Let me know if you want on the tag list! 4y

ErinSBecker Awesome! I definitely do! Please add me!! I'll put together my list today and tag you. This is right up my alley. So glad I found Litsy!!! 4y
ErinSBecker Hmmm... Logistical question @TheAromaofBooks - After a number is selected, does it go out of circulation or does everyone add another book to their list in that slot? If it goes out of circulation, I'll need to check what numbers are already out. 4y
TheAromaofBooks Great question!! All 20 numbers are in play every month. Some people come up with totally new lists every month (that would be me haha), some people just replace the numbers they read, and some people want to get through their specific 20 books, so the double up used numbers with other books (i.e. instead of replacing book 6, they make book 5 stand for both 5 and 6, if that makes sense). 4y

Charging the car and reading this new-to-me author for #ripxiv
.
It‘s set in South Africa in 1952 when the new apartheid laws have gone into effect and an Afrikaner police officer is found dead

Have you read Malla Nunn‘s books before?

Melissa_J I have several books in this series but haven‘t read any of them yet. I hope you like it. 5y
ErinSBecker I didn't realize it was a series. Yay! I've only read the first chapter so far, but I think this is going to be a real winner. 4y

Just finished this mystery set in 1952
South Africa. Fast-paced and suspenseful, with an ending that has almost too many twists.

Next-up for #24in48, I‘m getting some things done around the house while listening to The Cut Out Girl on audio.

Starting the #24in48 readathon! Here‘s my book stack for the weekend (audiobooks not shown). I‘m already partway through both A Beautiful Place to Die and Gilead, so I‘ll probably start off with those.

What are you reading today? 📚

The rain has been falling all day, but I've been transported to hot, dry South Africa and immediately sucked into this historical mystery set in the 1950's. Apartheid has just become law and the murder of a white police captain has set a small town on edge. This moment of levity made me laugh out loud. 🤓

I read a shitton of good books in January! I can't even pick a favorite so I'll link to all of them in the comments--and probably regret that decision halfway through 😂

Finished this on audio last night. This is a historical mystery set in South Africa just as the race laws were being put into place. The historical setting made his much more than a simple mystery, and it was a great, though painful at times, read.

Set on the boarder between South Africa and Mozambique in 1952 this story sucks you in until you can almost smell the volt, see the people and feel the tension between the races. The twist at the end comes from out of the blue and makes you want to smack a man who thinks he is all that. Turns out this is the first of a series and now I am off to the book store to get the next book.

DGRachel ...and another add to the TBR list. 😉 8y
