The Godmothers
The Godmothers: A Novel | Camille Aubray
109 posts | 17 read | 2 reading | 15 to read
Big Little Lies set in World War II era Greenwich Village! An irresistible, suspenseful novel about four women who marry into an elegant, prosperous Italian family, and then must take charge of the familys business when their husbands are forced to leave them during the war. Meet the Godmothers: Filomena is a clever and resourceful war refugee with a childhood secret, who comes to America to wed Mario, the family's favored son. Amie, a beautiful and dreamy French girl from upstate New York, escapes an abusive husband after falling in love with Johnny, the oldest of the brothers. Lucy, a tough-as-nails Irish nurse, ran away from a strict girls' home and marries Frankie, the sensuous middle son. And the glamorous Petrina, the familys only daughter, graduates with honors from Barnard College despite a past trauma that nearly caused a family scandal. All four women become godmothers to one anothers children, finding hope and shelter in this prosperous family and their sumptuous Greenwich Village home, and enjoying New York life with its fine dining, opulent department stores and sophisticated nightclubs. But the womens secret pasts lead to unforeseen consequences and betrayals that threaten to unravel all their carefully laid plans. And when their husbands are forced to leave them during the second World War, the Godmothers must unexpectedly contend with notorious gangsters like Frank Costello and Lucky Luciano who run the streets of New York City. Refusing to merely imitate the world of men, the four Godmothers learn to put aside their differences and grudges so that they can work together to protect their loved ones, and to find their own unique paths to success, love, forgiveness, and the futures theyve always dreamed of.

Pickpick

Finished last Sunday for #SundayBuddyRead but I failed to get a review post up. I would say that mafia stories aren‘t my thing so I likely never would have read this if @TheBookHippie hadn‘t picked it but I really found myself caught up in the stories of the 4 godmothers & their life in NYC from the 1940s, through the war years and into the 1950s. It made me watch the first 2 films in The Godfather saga (I am slowly slugging through the 3rd) & ⬇️

DebinHawaii …had me Googling & looking for more info which is always a good sign in historical fiction. It‘s not perfect, I felt the ending was a bit rushed & wrapped up too neatly in some cases but I enjoyed the ride & the always interesting Sunday book discussions. 6d

It's a business travel kind of week so my days feel extra long but it's nice to get on the road and see a couple new-to-me hotels I've never visited before. Luckily I know the managers, so the transition is easy.

Finally finished The Godmothers. Going to start Ghost 19 and hopefully get to the other two this week, as well.

But for the #SundayBuddyRead I would never have picked up this book, but so glad I did as this was an excellent read. I especially enjoyed the section covering the Second World War Years. Would really have liked to know what happened following the end of the main story and the death of the Godmothers. Thanks @TheBookHippie for your work on the read and for choosing the book. Recommended.

Her other book I am planning for January 2024 yes I know that sounds absurd. BUT I have plenty to read until then…🤣👀

As always thank you so much for SUNDAYS!!!
Next week SIMONE !!!!

vlwelser I love that you're already picking books for 2024. And now I know not to read this in the meantime. 💙 2w
TheBookHippie @vlwelser 👀🤣😘 I always look for good discussion or what I think could be without reading too much about the book 😅😵‍💫 sometimes that backfires as we well know 😫 thankfully we have fun no matter what. 2w
vlwelser Sometimes the bad ones are almost more fun discussion wise. But obviously I prefer to actually read good books. It all works out. 2w

mcctrish Oh thank you for saying that! I was totally going to find this and read it ❤️❤️ 2w
TheBookHippie @mcctrish ♥️♥️♥️ trying to make ya all wait 🤣♥️ 2w
TheBookHippie @vlwelser BAD ones are memorable that‘s for sure. 😝 we had one that was so bad with so many people sleeping with so many people I had to make a literal charts and diagrams and post them to our discussions so we all knew what we were doing. @Andrew65 and I still bring it up it was 😵‍💫 and found out later accurate 👀. (edited) 2w
vlwelser Oh. I read that. It's novelized fact. Ish. I'm glad you all had fun with it. 2w
DebinHawaii I have had this one on my Kindle for ages & didn‘t realize until I read the author notes that it was by her. Now, I‘ll wait even longer to read it so I can do it with the group! 🤣🤣🤣 2w

Filomena forces her hand and get the girls to school together Nicole and Teresa.
To protect them.
I COULDNOT believe what I was reading from Aime…….ugh STILL a man for happiness?! REALLY?! UGH.

Aime and Filomena off to see Strollo
Trade the book for their lives
They hope.
This part made me 🤮so not a fan of Aime … you?

AmyG Amie and Lucy were my least favorites. 2w
Sargar114 Amie was my least favorite. She continuously doing things that I hated. That scene with the wiretap was the only redeeming factor for her. 2w
vlwelser @AmyG 💯 2w
See All 15 Comments
vlwelser It felt like Aimee was just there to call in her favor. I love that Filomena sticks up for Nicole consistently. Not sure that would have worked on Lucy. 2w
mcctrish I was so frustrated with Aimee ( again) with this school issue! Thank goodness Filomena got her in line 2w
Bklover @TheBookHippie Hey, I have fallen behind, but am still reading this. My neighbor offered to help me paint my kitchen and living room, so we have been working on that constantly. I‘m really enjoying this book, but will probably stop following the discussion. ❤️❤️❤️ 2w
TheBookHippie @Bklover oh painting help -how wonderful !!!! No worries a few are behind and still posting a week late so do whatever works for you♥️!!! I‘m so glad you‘re enjoying it. 2w
DebinHawaii Aimee‘s response to sending Nicole to school (& the affair of course) really annoyed me. Like @AmyG she & Lucy we‘re my least favorites. (edited) 2w
Catsandbooks I'm glad Filomena pushed Aime into letting Nicole go to school. Aime was my least favorite character as well. 2w
Karisa Yeah, Aime dipped lower here for sure. Then seeming jealous of your own daughter‘s success! Really? That part made me pause. There must be people out there like that, but I don‘t know of anyone who‘d wish for less for their kids 🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 2w
TheBookHippie @Karisa my mother 👀😝. One of my daughters friends mom too😫so ridiculous 🤦🏻‍♀️. 2w
Karisa @TheBookHippie 😲 😢 🤬inexcusable! I‘m so sorry 2w
TheBookHippie @Karisa It is. I made the mistake of being born female. 🤣 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Maybe Nicole would've been better off with Lucy & Frankie. 😂 UGH. Given the closeness of the family and their previous endeavors, why wouldn't Aime want Nicole to join Theresa at school? Money couldn't be the true issue, right? 2d
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick NO. I wondered if it was lack of control or worried that she‘d be smarter than her -who knows it was weird though. 2d

Pollock

Petrina seeing Richard after selling her Polluck!!

AmyG I knew she would get back at him. This was awesome. 2w
Sargar114 Richard was such a tool. Cue eyeroll 2w
vlwelser One last little dig. Perfect. 2w

mcctrish Yes!!! Richard was a pill! Enjoy your choices 😆 2w
DebinHawaii Yep, she was well rid of him. Asshat! I was glad she ended up with someone who appreciated & supported her. 2w
Catsandbooks This was a great scene. Really show Richard how much he messed up 2w
Karisa Loved that Petrina had her happy outcome over Richard moment! The Pollock was the only part that had me hesitating of Petrina‘s judgement/taste in art though 😅 I‘ve always thought of his work as a sort of “emperor‘s new clothing” effect 😂 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Richard was a massive dipshit. I was glad Petrina was free of him and her new beau seemed like a good guy. (It felt timely to call him her beau.) 2d

Final thoughts ?????

AmyG I really enjoyed this book, the story, the women, the mafia (ha). It always a good sign when I fly through the sections. 2w
Sargar114 I really enjoyed this one as well! It would be so fun to see this adapted for tv. What a unique perspective on a mafia story! 2w
Sargar114 Also that top middle pic could be a good cover as well! 2w
See All 16 Comments
vlwelser So glad you found this. I hadn't heard of it. I don't know if it's a complete lack of expectations but I seem to enjoy your hidden gems the best. 2w
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 ♥️📸 seriously who picked that cover 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2w
TheBookHippie @vlwelser SAME. 😅🖤 However I love reading about this era of the Mafia it fascinates me👀. 2w
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 I agree it would make a great series! 2w
mcctrish @vlwelser the hidden gems are the BEST!!! Sometimes the dialogue between characters got me, it was basic but not always - inconsistently which just made it stand out more I guess. It feels like ages ago when everything was mob related so this was fun to read and remember all those movies and characters. I will bring up Ray Liotta again ❤️❤️🤣🤣 2w
LaraReads Overall really enjoyed the book. And especially enjoyed the discussions. Some of the events in the book were predictable and strangely convenient. But for the most part I liked being a part of this fun & fascinating family. And seeing how powerful these women could be! 2w
Deblovestoread It is always a good sign when I am anxious to read the next section. The mafia, Bonnie and Clyde all of this time has fascinated me as well. 2w
DebinHawaii Another great hidden gem pick! I really enjoyed it. I thought the final section seemed rushed but otherwise it was a very good read & of course, there‘s the always impeccable hosting by @TheBookHippie & the BEST discussions with the group. I have never been a huge mafia book/movie person but it is pretty fascinating & it got me to rewatch The Godfather 1 &2 & even start The GF 3 (although I am being slow with that one). 2w
Catsandbooks Excellent pick!! I enjoyed this one and agree that it would make a great show or movie! 2w
Karisa Fun read! Once again a book that would have never been a blip on my radar that I thoroughly enjoyed thanks to #SundayBuddyRead and @thebookhippie. 👏👏👏@Sargar114 @Catsandbooks I‘d watch this as a show for sure! 2w
TheBookHippie @Karisa ♥️♥️♥️♥️ this one was fun! 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I liked this one. It wasn't really on my radar until you had brought it up and I don't typically go for mafia stuff, but this one was a pleasant surprise. Things wrapped up a little too neatly & conveniently, but I was rooting for them to come out on top, so it's all good. 2d

Which was your favorite godmother ??

AmyG Filomena for sure. They were very lucky she married Mario. She was very smart and savvy. 2w
vlwelser I'm going to be the odd one out and pick Petrina. She has all these setbacks and manages to consistently sort herself out. And doesn't act bitter about it. She also fights for what she really wants and doesn't seem to worry about the little stuff. Also trendsetter. 2w
vlwelser I could easily pick any of them and make a case for it tbh. 2w
See All 11 Comments
Sargar114 @AmyG I agree, Filomena for sure. 2nd for me is Petrina. 2w
AmyG @Sargar114 Yes, second Petrina. Agreed. 2w
mcctrish I started off loving Lucy and I guess I still do, no one was taking advantage of her again so if that made her abrasive, best make better choices, Filomena rocked it though. I do agree with @vlwelser Petrina did always sort herself out ( I loved the scene when she asked her brothers if they remember the summer of Mario and her response to their memories- men are dumb) 2w
Deblovestoread Filomena and Lucy but I‘m glad Petrine got it together and proved herself. 2w
DebinHawaii Filomena then Petrina. Aimee lost it for me with the betrayal & I was annoyed with how Lucy reacted about the baby & how she treated Nicole, however I was okay with both of them at the end. 2w
Catsandbooks I also started out loving Lucy but Filomena quickly took over. She was my favorite followed closely by Petrina. Petrina stood up for herself and didn't take crap from the boys. Lucy ended up OK but Aime 🤮 2w
Karisa Is that Lucille Ball for Lucy? 😊 Filomena and Petrina tie for me as a well. Strong and smart for the win! 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I think Filomena, the Petrina, then Lucy. Aime didn't show much growth or strength and I'd choose their daughters before Aime. 2d

Nicole. Epilogue. 2019.
THE GOLD COINS!!!
Filomena ended up being the last to go…..
Thoughts on how they turned legit?

ALSO corruption everywhere as Filomena said. Mafia is way different now.
Thoughts?

📸another cover option …

AmyG They turned legit because she passed on her book…was it to Strollo? 2w
vlwelser I like this cover best. They should put you in charge of the design department. 2w
Sargar114 @AmyG I believe so. Cause Aimee called in her favor from tipping him off on the wire tap. @vlwelser I agree on this cover. Filomena was the youngest I think so it makes sense…but she‘s also a survivor 2w
See All 17 Comments
TheBookHippie @vlwelser 📸♥️ 2w
TheBookHippie @AmyG Such a strange way to get out! Probs the handing over of power. 2w
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 📸♥️ why wouldn‘t it be four women ?! 2w
mcctrish Did they put one woman in the cover because there was one left standing at the end? But it was the story of the 4 of them so I‘d rather it was a photo of 4. This is a great pic 2w
AmyG I thought the cover was awful. I am guessing the designer didn‘t read the book. 2w
Deblovestoread I agree! That cover did not do the book justice. 2w
DebinHawaii It‘s a pet peeve of mine when covers have nothing to do with the book or get something “wrong”-like one woman instead of four or have the character looking completely different from the way they are described! 🤬 2w
DebinHawaii On the turning legit part, I thought it was maybe a little too easy but they did have that Strollo favor/connection by Aimee I guess. I think it was fitting that Filomena was the last of them. 2w
Karisa The gold coins reminded me of Russian Doll. . . Only trusting in the most real/tangible items for wealth. When you‘ve been through as much as that generation did, who can blame them?! 😂 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick The ending was a little too neat overall. Sure, the godmothers may not have had the physical power, but they saw opportunities and assessed which ones to take. They were smart. I was glad that the Strollo connection ended up being one rather of respect and not him strong-arming the women, like I was afraid would happen. Filomena was the youngest and strongest of the generation, so it makes sense she would be the final one alive. 2d
TheBookHippie @Karisa LOVE RUSSIAN DOLL. 2d
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick it was a little too neat, but I still was very happy for it🙃😂. 2d
Karisa @TheBookHippie It‘s so good! I‘m looking forward to the new detective series with Natasha Lyonnetoo! 2d

Then

Then he ‘sees‘ the light. 👀😅

Do you like the real mob added in this story ?

AmyG I liked that they were placed in historical stories about the mob. This part was one hell of a story. 2w
Sargar114 I loved their relationship 💙. Of course Chris gets sense knocked into him by a boss, boys 🤷🏼‍♀️. I loved how they intertwined real mafia members, it added so much flavor to the story. 2w
vlwelser I sort of loved this. Lucy can be pretty fierce. I kept wishing Chris would get his act together. And also using real stories as the backdrop made this more believable. Even though reality was also hard to believe. 2w
See All 13 Comments
mcctrish I was getting a bit frustrated with Chris 🤣 like he found his path and then wanted some excitement 😳 but this big dinner would make for a fantastic scene in a show, the chaos of the kitchen getting ready and the chaos outside as police showed up and all the mobsters ran into the woods! I did love the real life mob stories intertwining in this book. 2w
Deblovestoread I was afraid Chris would never get it together and always be the one to worry about. The double whammy of a biological father who abandoned him then terrorized him and trying to find his place in the family he feels a bit outside of with this information…. 2w
DebinHawaii I had been annoyed with Lucy & this scene made me like her more again. And finally with Chris—I wondered what it would take for him to get some sense. I liked the real mobsters & historical figures being intertwined in the story. It made for lots of Googling. 😉 2w
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I love the Googling👀😅 2w
TheBookHippie @Deblovestoread ME TOO!! I was so scared for him. 2w
Catsandbooks I liked the real mob members in the book. I think it made me more interested in the story 2w
Karisa @vlwelser I agree! Having real people in the the background made the book better. Their real stories certainly give fiction a run for its money! 2w
Karisa @DebinHawaii Yes! I found myself liking Lucy again a bit in this section. Chris was maybe the luckiest character in this book. His choices were so dangerous but he was saved by his family everytime. 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick This scene was pretty funny. Chris is still young enough that I get that he'd be itching for some excitement. Cool that he found his calling a s a cook. I kind of imagined the Benny Hill music as Lucy is trying to drive this catering van while looking innocent. But ugh...middle aged women pose no threat and are largely ignored. Yay, she says weakly, full of sarcasm. 2d

Pippa a ballerina
Gemina gorgeous
Clubbing
Pippa gets her closure and the last of the men that killed her grandma is now dead, from her shooting him! HOLYCRAPOLA.
Thoughts????
Gemina and the whole Anastasia thing
GOOOD GRIEF!
That was intense!!
Good grief!

What did ya think ?!?!

Sargar114 The Pippa thing was another neatly tied up bow that I was okay with. I‘m surprised they didn‘t mention how he smelled in this scene to kind of trigger the memory more given how important it was earlier. That scene with Gemma and Anastasia was wild! Didn‘t see it coming. Given how neatly everything else tied up, it made me a little sad Gemma didn‘t end up with George. 2w
AmyG Alot of things just fell into place in this book. Lucky for them, I guess. It all seemed believable but very convenient. 2w
vlwelser I loved these girls. They do their thing no matter what their crazy parents are up to. 2w
See All 11 Comments
mcctrish Pippa has always been a force to be reckoned with, I loved this scene! I have to admit the Gemma/Anastasia should have gone sideways and it would have been totally because the parents aka men/dads didn‘t want to bother her pretty little head with real life concerns. Their mom ran the Book, they had a freaking real life role model to show them women can run the show BUT NO! (edited) 2w
TheBookHippie @mcctrish EXACTLY 💯 2w
DebinHawaii @mcctrish I kind of thought it would go sideways & turn into Gemma getting killed or injured in a “paying for the sins of the fathers (& mothers) kind of thing. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I‘m glad it didn‘t but I did think there would be more fallout from them trying to get out of the business. 2w
mcctrish @DebinHawaii I did worry about that ( but I was so certain all the men would be sacrificed that it wasn‘t front and centre in my brain) 2w
Catsandbooks Those scenes were intense but I'm glad everyone ended up OK! I loved Pippa and Gemma 2w
Karisa The Pippa scene made a lot of sense. The brother still out for revenge against the family. Priest-place-putter Pippa was ready for it since she was a kid! The Gemma scene seemed way too convenient with the timing and Filomena walking in for me, but the book stayed true to the roller coaster ride twisty plot till the end! 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I agree with @DebinHawaii that the Gemma/Anastasia scene should have absolutely gone wrong. I wished the girl no harm, but the family was able to get clean a little too easily. This last section was generally too fast & unrealistic for my preferences. I do think there should have been a callback to the gross cologne before Pippa took the brother down. 2d
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I totally agree where was the cologne? 2d

Filomena hearing Rosemaria warning her.
IS this what makes all her decisions this year?

Sargar114 RosaMaria seemed to signal significant change in Filomena‘s life. Her death got Filomena to America. And this warning essentially gave the family their chance to break away. 2w
AmyG I think Rosemaria has always been with her. She owes her life to what happened in Italy. 2w
mcctrish The trauma of being left behind, the author did a good job with that! RosaMaria befriending and guiding F made life turn around with care, knowledge and then opportunity. F was such an even keel, she paid attention always and could react 🔪 however needed. She makes this book 2w
See All 8 Comments
LaraReads @mcctrish I agree! She was my favorite character! Just such a strong woman. And yes, maybe because she had such a guiding force through Rosemarie. It was so fun reading all about her strength & plans. 2w
DebinHawaii Filomena was my favorite character as well-so smart, strong & brave. She made the best of a tragic situation with RosaMaria & it made sense that she remained her “guide” in life. 2w
Karisa I kept re-remembering that in everyday life, Filomena would be called by Rosamaria‘s name. Only the family knew her secret. That would be a constant reminder to Filomena of her strong, smart cousin. That dynamic seemed to shape her early on 2w
mollyrotondo Loved Filomena!! She was my favorite! It was really beautiful that she always carried her cousin with her throughout her life and had her cousin guiding her. Definitely helped Filomena remain strong and a rock for that family. 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Filomena learned her resilience from Rosamaria. She was young when she was traded in for debt repayment. Having Rosamaria take her under her wing during that pivotal time in her life really left an impression on Filomena. I like that she was a voice that stayed with Filomena through the years, almost like a guardian angel. 2d

Petrina and Mario how sad.
It seems they just couldn‘t get back to anything ……Realistic I think. You?

Sargar114 I may have missed the discussion on this initial reveal, but this was the twist that made the most sense to me. I was wondering why Petrina was considered such a wild child when she seemed like she had such a good head on her shoulders. Pregnancy makes sense to send her away, especially at the time. 2w
AmyG I can understand why they keep their distance. That generation doesn‘t seem to be very communicative. 2w
vlwelser He probably feels a little bit betrayed by her. But he doesn't cut her out totally. He just needs some distance. 2w
See All 9 Comments
mcctrish This makes the most sense to me, and I can imagine that it would take some time to wrap your brain around going from being a sibling to a nephew/son. He was part of a whole and now he‘s more of an only except he has a half sister who is a lot younger ( seems like a huge age gap but probably isn‘t ) (edited) 2w
Deblovestoread This family secret seems the most real to me and I think it would take a minute to adjust your thinking to the new relationship status even if you understand the reasonings behind it. (edited) 2w
DebinHawaii I think it is realistic in how it played out for them. He would have felt the betrayal & it would be hard to switch her role in his mind & heart. I agree with @Sargar114 that this was the best twist in the story & explained so much about Petrina. 2w
Catsandbooks I felt bad for Petrina because she loved Mario so deeply but it seems they never got back to having a close relationship. 2w
mollyrotondo This was really sad but definitely realistic and understandable. He was a young adult once he learned the truth. It would be so hard to except your sister is really your mom. That‘s not something you just accept without confusion and questions. It was a great twist and handled very realistically 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick While realistic, this made me sad. I hoped it would reveal that Petrina & Mario had gotten close again in time, once he realized it wasn't Petrina's lack of love for him that separated them, but her parents making the choice. 2d

https://www.whitehousehistory.org/teacher-resources/jimmy-carter-and-the-iranian...

Sargar114 Another conveniently tied up ending. 🤷🏼‍♀️. Whateves, it got us this story haha 2w
AmyG I remember this very well. I was relieved when he didn‘t get the job. Ha, yes, very convenient. 2w
vlwelser This was just weird. Like the author couldn't figure out a million other ways to tell the story. And then she doesn't even follow through. 2w
See All 10 Comments
mcctrish I like that the author tied in real life things to her story, it made it fuller. I feel like she spent more time researching The Mob than current events but in her defence the whole point of telling us the story was the background check soooo…. It just felt wrapped up quickly imo but the sexcapades with Aimee and Frankie bugged me more as a plot device 2w
Deblovestoread I remember the yellow ribbons, too. It was a convenient way to end the story but realistic by tying it to an actual event. 2w
DebinHawaii Yes, I remember the yellow ribbons for the hostages too. I thought the “wrap up” of the job for Nicole‘s husband & a few other things was a bit hit-or-miss for the author. For me, although I still really enjoyed the book, this final section felt rushed. (edited) 2w
Catsandbooks @DebinHawaii I agree the ending felt really rushed like quick tie this up in a neat bow 2w
Karisa @DebinHawaii @Sargar114 This author certainly knows how to keep storylines moving! I enjoyed it too but sometimes makes it a little harder to suspend disbelief. Too convenient 😅 2w
mollyrotondo @DebinHawaii @Catsandbooks definitely felt the ending was rushed. I thought it was such an easy move to say oh the background check won‘t happen now so don‘t worry. I feel like the reason for the family history lesson should have been less dire if she wasn‘t going to follow through on this background check plot. 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Once it was revealed that the background check was a non-issue I literally yelled, “Bah! Cop out!“ LOL The real-life situation tie-in (and the mobsters) was a nice touch, but once we were near the end, a few things about the overall story felt to tidy. Like there had to be a better reason to go into the story or a chapter on getting their names cleared or something. I didn't research & was only born in '79...was this the Argo situation? 2d

So. Nicole. She knew.
Think the decisions of The Godmothers or ACTUALLY Lucy, served her well. A better outcome?

📸me trying to find better cover pic for this book 👀😂

Sargar114 I missed Nicole knowing. I stayed up late to finish though so lol. I agree, the cover would be better to have 4 women. I think this would make such a great tv show! Imagine the wardrobe and all the storylines they could dive into! 2w
AmyG I was happy all worked out. Especially the part where her husband didn‘t have to worry about any backround checks….so her past didn‘t matter, in a sense. @Sargar114 I love period pieces….and agree that this would make a good movie or series. (edited) 2w
vlwelser I already said this. But I think that being raised by Aimee was better for Nicole. 2w
See All 13 Comments
vlwelser And I also really dislike that cover they chose. 2w
mcctrish @vlwelser I‘m not sure I‘d have ever picked up this book because of the cover 🤣🤣 and I think this would be a great series @Sargar114 I‘m just sad it‘s too late for Ray Liotta to be in it 2w
DebinHawaii Yes, like @vlwelser I also mentioned that I think Aimee raising Nicole instead of Lucy was better—especially with Filomena looking out for her. (It did annoy me that Aimee wasn‘t going to let her go to the gifted school with Theresa.) And yes, the cover is not a good one. Like @mcctrish I probably would not have picked it up & checked it out because of it. 2w
Karisa Oh yes! This image suits the book much better. It‘s about all four, not one in the spotlight! 2w
Karisa I liked Aime less in this section. Even though she grew as a character, she became so hardened without Johnny. I guess it was realistic though. Glad that Lucy came to her senses and let Nicole stay with her mother. That would have been horrible for Nicole to have been used as punishment like that 2w
TheBookHippie @Karisa I feel we should let them know we‘ve found a better cover pic 🤣👀. 2w
Karisa @TheBookHippie 💯👏👏👏 And remind them to have Netflix consult us when casting begins! 🧐🤭 2w
TheBookHippie @Karisa seriously !! It would make a great series!! 2w
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie 😂 I definitely think this is a better cover. The real cover doesn‘t fully capture the book. I was very happy Nicole was raised by her real mother. That was ridiculous of Lucy to propose. 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I wonder if Nicole did the math about her birthday and where he dad was at the time she would've been conceived and put two and two together? Did eveyone really think Johnny was all frail in the hospital, saying “hop on“ to Aime and she just did?! I mean really?! Anyway, my biggest gripe is that, with Johnny dead, and Lucy insisting Aime stay away, Nicole was without a father-figure. Being near Frankie & Mario could've provided that. 2d

Mario
Frankie, Chris
As Mario ducked a man followed Frankie out…
Mario makes it home ..
Chris
AND FRANKIE!
And woe … what a story my heart!!!
Did you think they‘d be dead?!
Good riddance Eddie
I don‘t even care if it‘s realistic I was just happy they were home 😅
You?!

Sargar114 When he was followed, I was sure he was dead! I agree, wrapped up a little cleanly but also happy they made it back. 2w
AmyG At one point I thought none of the men would return home. I, too, was happy they returned home. I grew to like this family and wanted good things to happen to them. 2w
vlwelser I thought for sure Frankie was done here. I don't care if it's unrealistic. I prefer this ending. 2w
See All 10 Comments
mcctrish Totally thought Frankie was dead! My brain was like “there goes # 2” because I really thought they all died 2w
Deblovestoread I‘m glad it didn‘t go the direction I was expecting and that they made it home. (edited) 2w
DebinHawaii I definitely thought the men were all done for. I liked this outcome—especially getting Mario back. 2w
Catsandbooks I'm glad they all made it home too! 2w
Karisa I thought Frankie was a goner at least twice this book! It‘s like the author‘s way of reminding us how dangerous their family‘s job is and how the guys are ready to step right back in to their roles once back. The scene was an efficient way of showing how much Mario has changed. 2w
mollyrotondo I would have been totally fine if we lost Frankie. I really hated him and I hated how Lucy just melted for him even though he was a jerk and a cheater. I also wasn‘t crazy about Mario murdering Eddie. But I was so happy Mario made it home. 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick When they said Mario ducked, I thought for sure Frankie was a goner. But Mario was alert and the guys got home alright. A little too cleanly wrapped up, but I'm glad they got there. I hoped for a little backlash with Frankie from the cheating. I was happy that life in Ireland with Eddie caused Christopher to get his head in a better place and he wasn't going home to live that thug life. I was really hoping/expecting just Mario to make it home. 2d

Aime has a GIRL …
Nicole
LUCY tells her to say it‘s Johnnys. She also gives her terms. Threatens her…
Just wow.
Was Lucy justified ?
Aimee. Thoughts
Filomena Nicole‘s godmother. To protect her. Smart?

Sargar114 Knowing what we know about Aimee, it was a caught up in the moment sort of thing and likely wouldn‘t have happened under different circumstances. That being said, it was still quite the betrayal and definitely understand the betrayal she felt from both of them. To keep the peace in the family it seems to have been the right call to say Johnny was the father. 2w
AmyG So many secrets. One can understand Lucy‘s anger. And yes, Filomena wanted to be Godmother to keep an eye on Nicole. I think I liked Filomena the most. (edited) 2w
vlwelser I think Nicole is really the one that lucked out here. Lucy is just bitter and insecure. Thankfully she seems to sort herself out later. 2w
See All 9 Comments
mcctrish I mean Johnny is going to know it‘s not his, right? This was a very weird section for me. Aimee and Lucy were thick as thieves at the beginning being the ‘new girls‘, all of the abuse Aimee suffered with her first husband, it just made no sense to me 2w
Deblovestoread This whole part annoyed me. They were suppose to have each other‘s backs but Aimee was weak. How could anyone trust her after that? 2w
DebinHawaii Not pleased with what Aimee & Frankie did-I hate cheating, but Lucy is my least favorite character & think her threat about sharing the “big secret” was wrong. Also imagine if she had pushed the issue & became Nicole‘s mother especially when Nicole revealed how Lucy treated her so distantly when she was growing up. Also, I am surprised Frankie didn‘t put 2 +2 together knowing Johnny‘s condition & the timing of when he slept with Aimee… 2w
Catsandbooks Both parties we're in the wrong here. Aime cheating and Lucy threatening her. I was upset that Lucy said she was going to take the baby and Aime was going to just let her. Like really you're gonna take a woman's baby from her and you're just going to let her?!?! I think it resolved in the right way though. I'm glad Filomena was the godmother too. 2w
mollyrotondo So I can‘t stand Aimee and I hate Frankie. So I don‘t blame Lucy going off the rails. But definitely didn‘t agree that they should keep more secrets. They should tell Frankie and Lucy should leave Frankie because he‘s the worst! But I‘m glad Filomena was there for Nicole and I‘m glad Nicole‘s real mom raised her because that was so wrong of Lucy to first insist Aimee give her her child just for appearances sake. Just not right at all. 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick They all lived under the same roof, minus Johnny at the time, so this entire incident felt contrived just for further drama. I get that Lucy felt doubly betrayed, but practically shunning Nicole is bad, too. Frankie took another man's baby into his care for Lucy, she should have been kinder. Aimee is still a doormat and, though she's shown moments of strength, she's still my least favorite. Thank goodness for Filomena being named godmother. 2d

Fantastic pick by @TheBookHippie for #SundayBuddyRead. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Historical fiction about 4 smart, strong women who are sisters-in-law, and part of a mob family. They all have secrets - big ones. And, they all have a fierce love and loyalty to their family. The characters are fictional, but many of the gangsters with whom they interact were real. Fascinating.

TheBookHippie @vlwelser Right? How is this wrapping up in that short of pages?!?! 3w
vlwelser I may just need to finish this except I have another really good book going. 😂 book nerd problems. 3w
Sargar114 If any of them survive I think it‘d be Mario, but I‘m not so sure. I‘m hoping at least Chris makes it home. 3w
Sargar114 @vlwelser I have the same problem right now!!! 3w
DebinHawaii I hope Mario makes it home to see the baby but I have my doubts. It will be interesting to see how it does all wrap up but I am ok holding until next Saturday to read. 😉 3w
Karisa I‘m thinking Mario and Frankie will make it home. I think the bio dad will keep Chris (with Chris being on board with that). If it‘s being true to the time period, wouldn‘t the guys go back to being in charge after the war and most the women go back to working in the background sidelined. Thanks for your service, now back to kitchen?🤮😢☹️ 3w
TheBookHippie @Karisa Yup 🤮🤮🤮🤮 3w
julieclair I'm betting Mario makes it home. Not so sure about Frankie or Chris. 3w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'll be surprised if any of the guys make it home at this point. They just seem destined to die young & with spaces in the crypt mentioned for Mom, Pop, & the sons...doesn't look good. I really do hope that Mario can at least make it home to see his daughter before that happens. This storyline with Chris and Frankie being in Ireland is a little weird. Not that there's 20 pages left, but there's quite a bit to wrap up, and time jumps ahead. 3w
mollyrotondo I actually do think the rest of the guys live. They might not be in charge but I definitely don‘t think we are getting off that easy with the whole Frankie drama 🙄 2w

DebinHawaii Yes, I think we will see more from him & it‘s probably smart to be in his good graces. 3w
Karisa @Sargar114 It does show Aime is getting more savvy. Will they still need friends like Strollo and Costello if the ultimate goal is going legit? 3w
TheBookHippie @Karisa 🤷🏻‍♀️ Gangs protect people who aren‘t members for various reasons -mafia as well but 🤷🏻‍♀️ - I‘m interested to see where it all goes… 3w
TheBookHippie @LaraReads “friends” 3w

The women have a plan to go legit
Johnny is for it
And has plans as well
Johnny reading all the greats at the sanitarium
He tries to tell his boys a different way
Breaks out of the sanitarium and of course….dies

Family crypt…ominous…. Foreshadowing ?

LaraReads Very sad he couldn‘t impart that wisdom onto his boys! He was trying so hard, but they just wanna be a couple of wise guys. 💔 Don‘t know how all of that is going to end up! 3w
kspenmoll It is very sad he came to the realization in the end that an educated life is important, vital to move away from the Business. His boys were too young & too schooled in mobster ways to understand & accept his wisdom. 3w
AmyG I had a feeling he would die. I think all the husbands die or disappear eventually. 3w
See All 13 Comments
vlwelser This is convenient in a way. He never finds out his wife betrayed him for example. 3w
Sargar114 @AmyG I‘m thinking that too 3w
Sargar114 I‘m glad Johnny had this change of heart and got to communicate it to his boys. I hope that being their last interaction with their dad that it‘s more impactful but I worry about the end result @LaraReads @kspenmoll 3w
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 Me too. Was it too little too late? 3w
Deblovestoread I agree @vlwelser . At least he didn‘t die with a broken heart knowing about his wife and brother. 3w
DebinHawaii @AmyG I agree! They will all die or disappear. And good that he didn‘t know about the betrayal. 3w
Karisa @vlwelser Yeah, the timing was all too convenient for me. Sad but dramatic 3w
julieclair I'm hoping that as the boys mature, they'll realize their father's last words to them were good advice, and they will heed them. Especially since the godmothers will most likely encourage them to do so. 3w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick The boys are about 4-5 years old. Are they really so versed in the mob ways that they are spurning education? This was a little far-fetched for me. I would think that there are elements of the family business that they aren't privy to just yet and are too young to connect the dots. I was actually a little bummed that there was no drama with him finding out his wife is pregnant by his brother. If you're going to give me drama - give me DRAMA! 3w
mollyrotondo I knew Johnny wasn‘t going to make. He was in that sanitarium for so long and they kept saying he looked worse and worse. But it‘s a shame he couldn‘t have realized the importance of an education earlier so his boys could have steered away from the mob influence. It‘s terrible he dies and his wife I walking around with another man‘s baby. That‘s way too much drama 😆 2w

TheBookHippie @mcctrish @AmyG Whoops -I shoulda posted it was truth-it was common knowledge to me growing up it was even used as a saying 👀👀👀👀🖤🤣😱 3w
Sargar114 In a way it showed a little naivety on their part; but then ultimately worked out in their favor giving them some legitimacy and loyalty. 3w
DebinHawaii I think it was a good move on their part. I don‘t think you ever really want to ask a favor but given the threat & Petrina‘s knowledge of him, it was probably the best thing they could do. 3w
Karisa I‘m still wondering if that move doesn‘t come back to haunt them. If Costello goes down or if he wants something in return later for his taking care of it… These guys are all so scary. 3w
julieclair I agree, @Karisa , I'm fearful that visit will have repercussions. 3w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick These guys are ruthless and I can't say which one would be more dangerous. One way or another, danger is on the horizon. I did laugh at the Vic Damone thing. I didn't read into it, but funny that he claims it actually happened. He would've been about 16 at the time. It's a funny picture to think about. 3w

kspenmoll Not sure how they will leave the business behind & become legit, but if any women can, it will be these united women! 3w
AmyG @kspenmoll I am curious, too, if they actually become legit. I am thinking not…only because the goddaughter‘s husband and the backround checks. Who knows? (edited) 3w
See All 11 Comments
vlwelser I thought it was cute. But maybe just a way to move the narrative along. 3w
Sargar114 It was a bit cheesy for my taste, but I appreciate the sentiment. I genuinely am hopeful they are able to legitimize. I think they do since the beginning of the book is the younger family member learning the family history 🤞 3w
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 Made me want to yell “YA-YA” for the Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood! ✊🏼 (edited) 3w
DebinHawaii It will be interesting to see if they can turn completely legit. I keep thinking of the Michael Corleone quote from G3 “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.” 3w
Karisa @DebinHawaii Yep, didn‘t the Corleone family try to go legal through gambling in Nevada too in the movies? Hopefully Filomena et al are better at keeping their hands clean 😅 3w
julieclair I liked the secret-telling meeting because it broke down barriers and united them. I don't know if they will ever be able to become completely legitimate, but I do think their children will, because of their mother's efforts. 3w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I did find this a little contrived - they each have one big secret so let's get it all out on the table - but at least they all know what they're up against and what could potentially be used against them. I hope they can go legitimate. It might be known to the more contemporary generations that they have mob ties in their past, but I hope they are firmly kept there and that these women can go on the straight and narrow. 3w
mollyrotondo I was relieved all the secrets were revealed amongst the women. That was really holding each woman down. But I wasn‘t crazy about the blood pact or whatever they were doing lol I do hope they are able to legitimize the business although I wonder if everyone just splits off and does their own thing instead. 2w

mcctrish Oh my!!! 3w
LaraReads Nope! That guy…nope! 😱 3w
kspenmoll Love how the author incorporated real “ Godfathers” in her book! 3w
See All 9 Comments
AmyG He is one scary guy. 3w
DebinHawaii Very scary & now in addition to knowing a big secret, he has a grudge against the women & the family. 😱 3w
Karisa So creepy! They were brave to go to the top guy about him. Will there be consequences for that? 3w
julieclair Such a scary guy. Great article! To think he joined the army in WWII and worked to keep the NYC docks safe! Unbelievable. 3w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Not that I follow mafia history, but it's funny to me that I recognize the names of his cohorts but not his. I thought he might have been fabricated. We haven't gotten a last name of this family. I wonder if there are elements similar to a real life crime family or just tiny elements of mafia life mixed with stereotypical Italian family traits. 3w
mollyrotondo Uhh this is what I‘ve been worried about throughout this book. Which big shot in the mafia were they going to annoy 😬 2w

I‘m liking Petrina more, you?

mcctrish I am! Using her strengths and getting on with things, I‘m so glad she and Filomena are friends 3w
LaraReads Oh, for sure! She has become one of my favorites! From being so aloof to really trying to bring the godmothers together like a real FAMILY should be! 3w
kspenmoll Her growth once out of her marriage is wonderful to watch- I too am glad she & Filomena have become friends. 3w
See All 13 Comments
AmyG Petrina seems to have come into her own. I wonder if, some how, she gtes back at her ex someway. 3w
vlwelser 💯 3w
Sargar114 I agree, I really like her. Really coming into her own. @kspenmoll @mcctrish I was also thrilled when she and Filomena became friends. 3w
Deblovestoread I think being able to be honest about Mario and getting out of her marriage has given her room to find herself. 3w
DebinHawaii Yes! I like her a lot now—she is smart & she & Filomena are a great team! 3w
Karisa @AmyG Exactly! Petrina deserves better and is really growing into her role. The family should‘ve always included her in the leadership (maybe they would have but that husband and his world got in the way) 3w
julieclair I'm liking her so much more now than I did at the beginning. It's great to see her coming into her own. And good thought, @AmyG , I hope she finds a way to get back at her ex and his family. 3w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I've liked her throughout - just thought she was stifled because of that useless husband of hers. Glad that she is stepping up to lead the family (as she should). If not for having Mario, she might have been in the thick of things all along. But I'm happy that she's close with Filomena and being a leader. 3w
mollyrotondo I‘m really like Petrina too. She has raised a strong daughter and is really shining now that she‘s no longer in that heartless marriage. I really think she can help move the family is a better direction. 2w

Aime in Frankie‘s bedroom 👀
Then of course pregnancy…
“Men are just men
From now on children first”-Filomena
Thoughts?
And who will end up with the baby now?

mcctrish I legit said “ WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!!” 3w
LaraReads Yes! I have no words! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ 3w
kspenmoll Agree! “Men are just men” 😱🤮 3w
See All 24 Comments
AmyG Alot of drama, this family! 🤣 3w
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll 🤮 my grandma said men follow their peckers through life women follow their hearts but some women follow peckers 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️😵‍💫 3w
vlwelser Amie needs to get her shit together and stop being a doormat. 3w
TheBookHippie @vlwelser SERIOUSLY 😝 shut your legs 😬 3w
Sargar114 Aimee is my least favorite of the women and this part definitely cemented that. Ugh!!! 3w
Deblovestoread Not a fan of Aimee at this point. 3w
DebinHawaii Yes! I yelled at her too. Almost a book throwing moment but … Kindle! 😉 And of course you knew she would get pregnant so a double betrayal of Lucy. And the “…it just happened because we were sad” defense is no defense at all. 🤬 3w
DebinHawaii @TheBookHippie Hah! What your grandma said! 🤦🏻‍♀️ 3w
Karisa @TheBookHippie 😂😂😂 3w
Karisa Was this plot line even necessary? Maybe just to drive a wedge between Lucy and Aime? But Lucy vowing to take the baby (again)—the whole thing oh my too far! What a rollercoaster! 3w
TheBookHippie @Karisa it‘s so common so probably why this story is in there… 👀 3w
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii just happened … so you tripped and fell on it? 👀🤦🏻‍♀️ 3w
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii grandma was a hoot and a half. 3w
TheBookHippie @Karisa grandma was 💯. 3w
julieclair So stupid. Both of them. I couldn't believe it. 3w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Your grandma & my grandma would have gotten along great! 😂 Why does it seem like all the female characters in books are in heat, only cheating when they're ovulating!? Now that Johnny died, he's spared from the truth & if they are all living in the same brownstone compound, Amie could still be a part of the child's life. But is Frankie long for this world? Will it even matter in another couple of chapters? This is a large wedge between women. 3w
TheBookHippie @julieclair 💯💯💯💯😡 3w
mollyrotondo I really don‘t like Aime so Frankie and Aime are my least favorite characters. I do not agree with Filomena that we just ignore the bad and hurtful behavior of our spouses and friends for the children? What?! Stay together for the kids is the worst thing to do. And the truth needs to come out because Frankie needs to be embarrassed and suffer some consequences for his actions. Uhh the drama! Also agree with @Karisa was this necessary? Lol 3w
Karisa @mollyrotondo Right! I‘m feeling the same about Frankie/Aime. Not my favorites right now. Hard to tell with this roller coaster of a book where they will all land 👀🍿😂 3w
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I loathe Aime 😵‍💫🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ spineless comes to mind… 3w

1944 Frankie mad at women being in charge..
Resenting Filomena
Now Frankie
And off in Ireland?!
Frankie cleared -that awful Alonza dead…
But he‘s apparently missing?
Looking for Chris…

Chris so…. The truth comes out ..

So thoughts ?!?!?!

mcctrish Ding Dong the witch is dead!!! I was surprised at Frankie‘s resistance because his mother ran half the ‘show‘? Pretty sure he isn‘t coming home but I was hoping he‘d find Mario in the hospital 3w
kspenmoll I was surprised too as his mother was so involved in the family “business”. Glad Alonzo is dead-Wondering if Frankie will wander… 3w
AmyG Not too sure about Frankie. Does he meet another woman in Ireland? 3w
See All 15 Comments
vlwelser This is a little too much like the Godfather movies for me. But Frankie seems like a bit of a fool. Maybe he didn't understand that Tessa was in charge. 3w
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I think he may have but no the whole picture and Filomena isn‘t blood… 3w
Sargar114 @TheBookHippie @kspenmoll I agree, I think he “knows” that Tessa ran the show but never wanted to admit it. Alonza was terrible, I‘m glad she‘s out of the picture 3w
Sargar114 @mcctrish I‘m wondering if he‘ll meet up with Mario also. Or maybe send Chris that way if he doesn‘t make it. 3w
Deblovestoread @mcctrish 😂. I didn‘t think about Frankie finding Mario…maybe the other way around when Mario‘s injury has healed? 3w
mcctrish @Deblovestoread oh yeah, Mario would still be getting letters from Filomena and would know Frankie is over there 3w
DebinHawaii Frankie is a hothead & I‘m not sure things bode well for him. I think he totally thought Christopher was going to be Strollo‘s son the way he kept showing up in the book. 3w
Karisa So. Much. Drama! It could go anywhere next, but I‘m rooting for the women to stay in power even when the men come home. Love it! 3w
julieclair I do expect Frankie and Mario to find each other one way or another while they're both in Europe. But I'm afraid of what might be happening with Christopher. He may be gone for good. 3w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I think Frankie knew his mother was at least a co-runner of the business, but didn't have a problem with it because it was his mother, a strong parental figure, but to have his sister and wives running the show is the problem. I think because of Gianni and the sons, Tessa's role was perhaps more of a silent partner/office manager/bookkeeper. But with Gianni & Tessa dead, the sons spread out, someone has to keep things running. Why not the women? 3w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Also, Lucy should absolutely have come clean about Christopher, at the very least to Frankie. It's not like she took the kid from NYC to Florida. He's in their backyard!! That was poor judgment on Lucy's part. 3w
mollyrotondo @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I agree! Lucy should have at least told Frankie about Chris. That wasn‘t right to keep that from him even though I hate Frankie. I hope Frankie never comes back because then yet another lie will be told because there‘s another baby everyone wants to lie about 🤦🏻‍♀️ I hope he stays in Ireland. 3w

Pippa and the priest
Good for her!
And UGH
so so so prevalent… disgusting !!!
She seems to be coming into her own
I wonder what she‘ll turn out to be?

mcctrish Yay for Pippa and holy crap the nerve of the priest to send the police round!!!!! 3w
TheBookHippie @mcctrish RIGHT??? How dumb is he? 3w
LaraReads Ohhhh….this was a good part! I really like Pippa! 3w
See All 14 Comments
kspenmoll Fabulous! So amazing she was not afraid to speak against a priest given their authoritarian role in the Church. The Churches history with pedophilia - 2 priests I know of in HS abused some classmates of mine who were afraid to speak out until later. They just moved them from parish to parish. I wonder if this episode in the book is realistic? (edited) 3w
AmyG Pipps is turning out to be a strong yound woman! Like the other women. 👍🏻 3w
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll the mafia killed priest, good and bad ones but most priest did their bidding and left them alone for fear of death. I bet it‘s common and real 😬. 3w
vlwelser Pippa is also fierce. And that priest.... It does seem weird to send the cops after her. Maybe he thought she'd be too much of a girl to tell anyone. But the priest might think he's untouchable if he's been getting away with this for a while. 3w
Sargar114 Pippa has such strong female role models, no wonder she had the strength to stand up for her cousins and do what was right…even if the wrong way (kinda like the family). When the cops showed up saying they were sent by the priest I was worried that was what was happening. Glad it played out like it did. 3w
Sargar114 @mcctrish @TheBookHippie I‘m guessing that priest fully expected cooperation from the “community” given the history of the Catholic Church. (Much like @kspenmoll said) 3w
Deblovestoread This proved Pippa is going to be just fine. She is strong and ready to callout what isn‘t right. 3w
DebinHawaii Yay Pippa! She is strong & protective like her mother.. I do wonder if the priest just thought the authorities would take his side and/or was just stupid & too new to know the family he was dealing with in this case. (edited) 3w
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I was astounded how did he not KNOW?! Or was he that arrogant? 3w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I hate that I knew what was coming before it was fully revealed. At least Pippa wasn't afraid to confront the goon and stick up for her cousins. I am loving that all these women are headstrong for their time period. 3w
mollyrotondo Uhh this part was so frustrating! The cops were so quick to protect the priest instead of the children! They were going to just arrest that poor kid because the priest said so. Uhh I was so mad! So glad pippa stood her ground! 3w

The book- the ledger
Well
Wow
That‘s THE FAMILY
💵💵💵💵💵💵
I imagine it‘s true the bank wouldn‘t lend to immigrants.
Filomena fierce protection of it
“ Whatever happens, I am not going to die like Tessa did”
The sword throw!!! 🏆

So. The right person is in charge?

mcctrish I hadn‘t really thought about it but for sure the banks only lent money to people they knew/respected/liked. But only for some things ? Houses, summer homes. Other money things come up so other lenders step forward 3w
kspenmoll Filomena has proven how strong & intelligent she is-plus she is a whiz with numbers! At that time I assume immigrants could not get loans. Women could not either. (edited) 3w
LaraReads @TheBookHippie @kspenmoll yes! Love Filomena! 3w
See All 14 Comments
AmyG Filimena came into the family as arranged. But look how much she has to offer. Reminds me of Michael Corleone. Nobody wanted him to be involved yet he wound up being the Godfather. 3w
vlwelser She's fierce. I think this is a good role for her. 3w
Sargar114 @AmyG totally. She is the most “outsidery” of the wives and in a way was handpicked by Tessa. She‘s also a survivor, look at all she had to endure just to get to where she is. She‘s perfect for this role. 3w
Deblovestoread Absolutely! She proved herself to Tessa. 3w
DebinHawaii The sword throw was epic! I cheered. I like Filomena & I‘m glad the women know her secret & hopefully will stop referring to her as “Mario‘s wife” because that was getting annoying to me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii RIGHT??? Ugh. Reminds me of church people and their Mrs husbands first and last name …🤮🤮🤮 3w
TheBookHippie @AmyG GOOD POINT! 3w
Karisa It was probably doubly hard to get credit at that time as an immigrant and as women. Big potential customer base ignored = lots of opportunity for underground lending/sales. It‘s amazing how quickly Filomena went from stranger to head of the family (or at least co-head with Petrina) 3w
julieclair I admire Filomena so much. She's smart, strong and kind. And badass when she needs to be. That knife throwing scene!! 3w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick The knife throwing scene was excellent. You don't screw with Filomena. She has a lot to offer and has no family to be loyal to, so it's nice that she's showing loyalty to her “adopted“ family. I don't know if it's that she was brought in at a younger age or if being from Tessa's village really is giving her a leg up with the business side of things, but I'm amazed that she's still only about 19/20 years old at this point. 3w
mollyrotondo I really like Filomena. She has a head for business and she‘s tough! I understand the need for this money lending role for the immigrant and lower class since the banks won‘t. But then get a license to open your own money lending business and make it legit and don‘t get involved with all the violence. The women could turn this operation legit. 3w

LaraReads I feel like this was beginning of us seeing the darker side to Lucy. She jealously claimed that she didn‘t have dainty ears like the rest of them. Hers were pudgy like her whole body was curvy. I agree, weird to see them brought up so much, but it was some foreshadowing into how viscous Lucy was going to turn towards them. I hope they work it out! 3w
kspenmoll @LaraReads Your idea of seeing the earrings/jealously as foreshadowing regarding her fury/viciousness later on is one I did not think of but totally agree with you! 3w
mcctrish I had no idea earring posts came in different lengths and I was kind of wondering what do her ears look like? 3w
See All 14 Comments
LaraReads @kspenmoll yes, I didn‘t even think of it until this discussion post, but it does seem to be the beginning of her unkindness. @mcctrish I know, me too! 😂 3w
AmyG Good point as I didn‘t pick up on this either. (edited) 3w
vlwelser I thought it was a way to show Frankie's insecurity. And also to show that she's also insecure. 3w
Deblovestoread I just kept wondering what the deal was…they‘re earrings for crying out loud. But what @vlwelser says makes sense. 3w
DebinHawaii I kept wondering what the deal was with the earrings too, so that totally makes sense @LaraReads & @vlwelser showing both the insecurity of the couple & the darker side. 3w
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I was thinking are they clips? I was so confused. 3w
Karisa Hmmm, green is the color of jealousy too. Good call, @vlwelser! I was just thinking the earrings were going to become evidence somehow later. Whenever something small is mentioned a few times must have some significance. Were earrings mostly clip on during that time period, @TheBookHippie ? My grandmothers both wore clip ons but for religious reasons🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
TheBookHippie @Karisa Clip was big -my Bubbe said because of potential infection -no clue if that‘s true🤷🏻‍♀️… also religion 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️😵‍💫 3w
TheBookHippie @Karisa Google Why are so many vintage earrings clip on?
As the 20th century began, a solution was engineered with the invention of clip-on earrings. This new design allowed people to decorate their ears without the “disgrace” of piercing holes in their ear lobes. The crystal chandelier style of clip-on earrings is now considered an icon of Victorian-era fashion. 👀
3w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @mctrish I'm with you on wondering what her earlobes must look like to say they are chubby and she feels self-conscious about them. I wasn't making the connection to jealousy, but I did suspect they might be taken and used against the family. 3w
mollyrotondo I did not understand the self conscious earlobe problem. At first I thought the same as @Karisa I thought Frankie stole the earrings and Lucy suspected so she didn‘t want to wear them. But then she blew up over her chubby earlobes and I was like what? She is very self conscious. But I blame Frankie for that honestly because he clearly lets his eye wander. That relationship is really unhealthy. (edited) 3w
