Goddess of Filth | V. Castro

"Five of us sat in a circle doing our best to emulate the girls in The Craft, hoping to unleash some power to take us all away from our home to the place of our dreams. But we weren't witches. We were five Chicanas living in San Antonio, Texas, one year out of high school."One hot summer night, best friends Lourdes, Fernanda, Ana, Perla, and Pauline hold a sance. It's all fun and games at first, but their tipsy laughter turns to terror when the flames burn straight through their prayer candles and Fernanda starts crawling toward her friends and chanting in Nahuatl, the language of their Aztec ancestors. Over the next few weeks, shy, modest Fernanda starts acting strangely-smearing herself in black makeup, shredding her hands on rose thorns, sucking sin out of the mouths of the guilty. The local priest is convinced it's a demon, but Lourdes begins to suspect it's something else-something far more ancient and powerful. As Father Moreno's obsession with Fernanda grows, Lourdes enlists the help of her "bruja Craft crew" and a professor, Dr. Camacho, to understand what is happening to her friend in this unholy tale of possession-gone-right.

I loved this book. It's a bit raw and gory be warned but it is also fantastic. It's about a group of girls who have a seance that goes really wrong ❤️🐈‍⬛️❤️

This was a story possession story with Chicana characters from Texas. It had an interesting twist to the "spirit" possessing Fernanda. It has a feminist twist that explores sexuality and coming of age. The things Fernanda did were horrifying but the storybhad me hooked! 4 ⭐️

🎧finished a #BlackCatCrew Buddy Read #Scarathlon2023

A quick 1, but fully fleshed out. A group of girls upon their high school graduation have a seance & 1 becomes inhabited. Good, evil, all the grey area & a huge dose of female rage.

This novella was fantastic. I need more feminist horror in my life. Ancient gods, human monsters, possessions, female friendships. A latina Exorcist, but more satisfying in the end. At least for me. I also really love this cover. #SummerHorrorReads

I loved this horror novella about 5 friends who hold a séance. College bound Fernanda appears to have become possessed but things are not what they seem in this story of hardworking women, most of whom are disadvantaged by circumstances but dreamers nonetheless & yet to become disillusioned by life. There were a few flaws at the end but the majority of the ride was great. Another wonderful indie horror book (by an author who has now been (cont)

vivastory picked up by a major publisher) 10mo
batsy This sounds great! You and @Reggie always have great horror picks and I'm always noting them down in the hopes that I'll get to a few at least when the courage rolls around 😆 10mo
Reggie @batsy most of what Castro writes is justice for women. I never really feel scared reading her books. Also, I agree with what Vivastory said. Her endings need work. 10mo
sarahbarnes Fantastic review! I‘m with @batsy that I always feel like I don‘t have the courage to read horror. This sounds really good though. 10mo

To quote Lady Gaga:

“talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, shit on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it.”

This is a quick read that didn't really do it for me. The timeline is unclear and the writing style cursory. Castro is an author with a good message but no faith that her readers will get the message without her repeating it in plain language over and over again, which is fine, just not what I read fiction for.

I'll plan to get this one in the mail tomorrow or Thursday.

allureofbeauty Looking forward to it. 2y
ImperfectCJ @allureofbeauty The other two readers in our group loved it, so I think there's a good chance you'll like it, too. Just wait until after you've read it to read my "final thoughts" so my grouchiness won't taint your experience. :-) 2y
allureofbeauty Haha will do. I‘ve been wanting to read it for forever it feels like so I hope it doesn‘t suck (for me) like the blackened teeth one did. Hated that one. 2y

This story fed my craving for horror! It was liberating, haunting, and f-yah type moments. Definite pick for horror fans who want a fresh take on monsters and the true horrors and evils in life #lmpbc #round14 #groupH #horror @Jadams1776 @ImperfectCJ @allureofbeauty

I've added in some odd horror and debut authors-the last two picks are manga.
I'm torn between which pick to read

allureofbeauty I vote goddess of filth. I‘ve been really wanting to read that. 2y
ImperfectCJ I'm not a big manga fan, so preference for the other titles. But all of these titles are new to me, so I'm cool with whatever. 2y
Jadams89 I‘m good with any of these 2y

Goddess of Filth by V. Castro is a story about the love a group of friends and how tough their bond is when they are tested after one of them is possessed.

You gotta pick this one up!

A novella with a cool "possession", my only complaint is that I wish it were longer, so that the group of girls at the center could get more time to shine!

This book is novella length. It is very interesting, and easy to read. The possession storyline was different from others I have read. I especially liked the female empowerment, and how the girls realized their potential. I felt the inclusion of the priest subplot was unnecessary. Luckily it didn't take up too much time. I also felt at times the conversation was too juvenile, mostly when Fernanda was talking to the goddess. Overall I liked this.

There are five Chicanas, Lourdes, Fernanda, Ana, Pauline, and Pearla, who reunite after their first year of being out high school in San Antonio, TX. In fun they decide to do a seance asking for any spirit listening to come and help them in their lives. Little do they know, someone was listening. I really enjoyed this Chicana and feminist possession story that subverted all my expectations of what a possession story should be. I look forward 👇🏼

Reggie to more by V. Castro. 3y
Twainy Your books always look so much more interesting than mine 😝 3y
Reggie @Twainy it‘s the trickery of a good cover. 😁 This was a novella. Forgot to say that. 3y
DivineDiana I never thought I would be interested in a book with the word “Filth” in it, until I read your review! 😳 Great job! 3y

Since we‘re at the end of the month, I wanted to post what I received in my 2 April horror-themed book boxes. Here‘s what I got from #Nightworms.

I loved Goddess of Filth! I haven‘t had a chance to read Whisper Down the Lane, but it‘s on my May TBR & I‘m starting Scanlines* today. I absolutely love this subscription! I‘ve been introduced to a lot of great indie publishers & new authors. 👻
