Amelia Bedelia, the housekeeper with a literal mind, merrily upsets the household when she "dresses" the chicken and "trims" the steak with ribbons and lace.

I had to go back to a childhood favorite for this prompt! Amelia Bedelia was given a new look in the 21st century, but the very first book, and Amelia Bedelia Goes Camping, will always be my favorites. Ah, childhood memories! I'm pretty sure I tried to “dress the chicken“ and “draw the drapes“ at least once during childhood. 😆

megnews My absolute favorite is when she “dusts” was it the drapes. I think of that often and laugh. My 15 year old is extremely literal and has often reminded me of Amelia. 2mo

How do you keep track of articles you want to read but just don‘t have the time for?

I leave them open on my phone until I accidentally close them & yell, “SHIT!” 😅🙈💩

I know there‘ve gotta be better systems. I‘d love an app that stores them *and* reminds me to read them. Otherwise it‘s very much “out of sight, out of mind.”

Also: share some interesting articles you‘re looking forward to reading! I‘ll post mine in the comments. 🤗

laur89 On iPhone, there‘s an option to add to your reading list. It saves all the links to a tab in the same place you would look at your history. I‘ve used it before! 3mo
BookwormAHN Have you tried the pocket app? 3mo
monalyisha @BookwormAHN No! But it looks promising! Have you used it? 3mo
BookwormAHN Yes, I have it on my Kindle. I've used for a few years and it works well. 3mo
monalyisha @BookwormAHN cool! I think I‘m gonna try it out. Thank you! 3mo
Crazeedi @BookwormAHN you can put pocket on the kindle? Or is that only kindle fire, cause I have a paperwhite 3mo
BookwormAHN @Crazeedi Sorry I meant Kindle Fire. Although I also have a paperwhite and that would be a good addition. 3mo
TheBookAddict 😝 I use the same method you use. 🤦🏽‍♀️ 3mo
monalyisha Suggestions I‘ve acquired otherwhere (& have not tested since I‘ve already downloaded Pocket) include: Instapaper & Evernote. 3mo
Flaneurette I do that shit! thing too! I‘ve been using Instapaper and pocket. Mostly pocket lately bc it automatically syncs w my kobo and Instapaper no longer works for my New Yorker articles for some reason🤷🏼‍♀️ 3mo
rachelsbrittain I have the same problem so I bookmark them in a "to read" folder that I swear I'll get around to reading eventually ? 3mo
Crazeedi @BookwormAHN I have pocket app on my phone 3mo
Crazeedi @monalyisha I have Evernote too, it works! 3mo
Clare-Dragonfly I use Pocket. It doesn‘t remind me on its own, but you could probably hook it up to another app using IFTTT. I used to have it connected to Beeminder. 3mo
quietjenn Another Pocket user here, although I'm pretty bad about getting to them ... 3mo

1. Amelia Bedelia is one of my long-time favorites.
2. Pie. I learned the art of flaky crusts from my moms, who learned from her grandmother. It‘s a tradition!
3. Sometimes my garden and, more often, swimming. Also genealogy.
4. I love right where I live, but I‘d like to spend winters somewhere warmer.
5. 💕💕

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Prairiegirl_reading It makes me mad when people do that! Then the tradition stops. 😰😰 11mo
Prairiegirl_reading @BarbaraTheBibliophage yeah me too!!! I feel like it‘s the responsibility of the older generation to show the younger so that it continues but my grandma didn‘t see it that way. 😕 11mo

Amelia Bedelia is a RF written by Peggy Parish and illustrated by Fritz Siebel. This is a story about a girl who is hired to assist Mr. and Mrs. Rogers clean up around the house. The to do list is written out for her to complete while they are gone. Without realizing, she completes every task literally rather than the way Mrs. Rogers meant it. Amelia thinks she has done a great job but when they return, the Rogers disagree.

JessicaC This book is a great way to incorporate understanding idioms. This website gives multiple different ways to teach the students what an idiom is, while reading any of the Amelia Bedelia books. https://www.brighthubeducation.com/lesson-plans-grades-1-2/119642-idiom-lesson-w.... The UDL used would be 3.2, highlighting patterns and critical features of this book. For ESOL, 1,10,12,29. 1y
DrSpalding Good for you! You must teach idioms as a part of the Language Arts Florida Standards. Missing ESOL verbiage. 1y

Amelia Bedelia is a comical and charming RF book are written by Peggy Parish and illustrated by Fritz Siebel. Amelia takes everything literally and will make children giggle when they read about her adventures. This would be an excellent book for IR in the classroom. This is Amy. Or as I sometimes call her, Amelia (when she is being a stooge) or Amelia Bedelia Puppy Dog Butt. She's particularly in love with Second Smaller Human, always nearby during play, supervising exploration, and giving and receiving kisses.

Bookzombie Adorable! 💕🐶 2y

mrsmarch @Bookzombie @DGRachel @MaureenMc Thanks! She's 10 1/2 and my first baby so I love watching her love our human babies too. Apparently that can be difficult for a female of her breed to do, and as she was 3 when we got her and 6 when the first baby was born, it's especially exciting to see her being such a good nana dog. I'm very proud of her. 2y

This was my FAVORITE book when I was little. I used to carry this book around and read it till the spine started to fall apart! This RF book is a humorous story about a woman who takes a list of chores a bit too literally on her first day of work, but luckily her famous lemon-meringue pie saves the day! Lesson Plan: http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/amelia-bedelia-cl... #UCFLAE3414sp17

Mlegg SUCH MEMORIES! I always loved this book as a kid and I'm sure it is still widely appreciated to this day. Such a fun story to share to a class. 3y

I have a problem when it comes to humor in books. I gravitate towards the serious drama. Maybe I should go with the last book that I found wry in a self-deprecating way--A REUNION OF GHOSTS by Judith Claire Mitchell. Instead I return to childhood, and the delight I found in Amelia Bedelia's creativity. (Also maybe a little dread, cos I could be a rules stickler. 😱). This statue is in front of the Manning, SC public library. #FunFridayPhoto

I thought these books were hysterical as a kid. Today, it reads like people are talking very awkwardly to Amelia just so she'll have something to misunderstand. "These chairs need to be painted. Give them two coats each." So she goes to the coat closet ...

It reads like a ten-year-old telling you a really long joke, where you could have figured out the punchline yourself if the kid hadn't telegraphed it the whole way.

quirkyreader Maybe Amelia was high functioning on the Autism spectrum. Also, years ago I got a chance to see Peggy Parish speak and got to meet her whilst she was signing books. I went to this event with my way younger sister, one of her classmates, and my dad. 3y
Cortg My sister LOVED Amelia Bedelia growing up. She used to totally crack up reading it in 2nd grade. 3y

Imagineannie I think I'm not an Amelia Bedelia person. They annoyed me as a kid, and they annoyed me as a mom reading to her own kid (who, fortunately, didn't like them either). They frustrate me in the same way as "Curb Your Enthusiasm" did - repeated, foreseeable disasters with no growth curve. Did I just seriously analyze my feelings about Amelia Bedelia? 3y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled 😂 so true! 3y
SiriGuruDevSingh It helps if you make all the voices absolutely ridiculous. My kids love these books!😂 3y
bookishkris @Imagineannie I feel the same way about Amelia Bedelia. I refused to even read them to my last nanny kids, even though the older would have loved them. 3y
Gonerogue I never liked these... I felt like the whole book was set out to make fun of and put down Amelia. Then I really didn't like it when other people started telling me I was her. However I adore Elephant and Piggy books. They make me laugh and smile how they are so exact with their words. It helps they also stay really good friends. 3y
