Code Talker
Code Talker: A Novel About the Navajo Marines of World War Two | Joseph Bruchac
"Readers who choose the book for the attraction of Navajo code talking and the heat of battle will come away with more than they ever expected to find."Booklist, starred review Throughout World War II, in the conflict fought against Japan, Navajo code talkers were a crucial part of the U.S. effort, sending messages back and forth in an unbreakable code that used their native language. They braved some of the heaviest fighting of the war, and with their code, they saved countless American lives. Yet their story remained classified for more than twenty years. But now Joseph Bruchac brings their stories to life for young adults through the riveting fictional tale of Ned Begay, a sixteen-year-old Navajo boy who becomes a code talker. His grueling journey is eye-opening and inspiring. This deeply affecting novel honors all of those young men, like Ned, who dared to serve, and it honors the culture and language of the Navajo Indians. An ALA Best Book for Young Adults "Nonsensational and accurate, Bruchac's tale is quietly inspiring..."School Library Journal From the Trade Paperback edition.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ While really informative, this book had very little by way of actual story or character, which I would‘ve liked to see! Read for school

Fleming Begaye Sr., died on May 10, 2019 at the age of 97. He was one of the last remaining members of an elite group of Navajo people who used their language to help transmit top-secret military information during WWII. RIP code talkers

I struggle with both war books and, particularly, WWII books. I find that novels with that base often exploit the tragedy of the terrible for the dramatic value. I appreciated that this did not do that. It tells the story of people whose stories too often went untold in a restrained, respectful manner that I think the code talkers themselves would find well-done.

Met a real “code talker” today, while on vacation; he was 20 at the time of WWII and is now 93!

The book is one about the Code Talkers, but he did not write it nor is featured. He‘s one of seven still alive and spreading the word about the Native American military members.

inthegreensandblues That is wonderful that you got to meet him. Sometimes I think about how soon that whole WWII generation will be gone, and fear that people are already forgetting what that fight was about. 6y
DivineDiana How fantastic! 6y
CoverToCoverGirl It must have been an amazing experience to meet him! 😊 and I feel the same @inthegreensandblues (edited) 6y
AlaMich I have a coffee table book about the code talkers. It‘s such a fascinating story! 6y
CrowCAH @inthegreensandblues @DivineDiana @CoverToCoverGirl @AlaMich it was neat to meet him and it‘s a fascinating story how the war effort utilized all their resources! 6y

I have not read this book in years! It is one of my personal favorites! I am currently trying to get my brother to read it instead of books with baseball. He is too old for those!

Peaceful_Reader This IS a great book. Thanks for the reminder. 7y

Just finished. This was so well written. The protagonist is a compilation of people. I intend to have both my teens read this. If you love Navajo history, Marine Corp History, or have an interest in the Pacific part of WWII, I highly recommend. If you have an interest in the issues faced by Native Americans I also recommend it.

This not completely set on an island, but much of it does take place in Hawaii and other Pacific islands during WWII. It also seems a very appropriate book to share on Pearl Harbor Day.

I really enjoyed this book. I listened to it on audio and liked the historical references and stories told about the Navajo people and language being used during WWII. I may have to listen to it again on a road trip with the teeny-boppers, it's right up their alley.
