Nope. Feels formulaic. Basically a rewrite of first book, pushing characters through worn plot points. Even fast pacing is boring if it‘s same ol same ol. Sequels are hard.

This is the second book in the series and I was expecting something good but that it would suffer from second book syndrome and just be a bridge to the finale, boy was I wrong. This book, while short for fantasy, is jam packed with action and character development. I cannot wait for the third, I was questioning how on earth there would need to be a third and then BOOM! This is why! Right at the end. Massive cliffhanger. Fantastic.

So, the 2nd book had come out in late 2019. I read in early 2021. I thought the finale would be out by the end of 2021. Now it is 2022, I was absolutely sure it would be published within this year.
Wrong again.
2023.
It's okay. Writing takes time. Writers are humans just like us.

Ugh. But still😭, I did not expect it to be 2023!

“You are not your mistakes.” Mama Agba holds both of her shoulders, making Amari cry harder. “Do not let one moment define or destroy you. The gods work in mysterious ways. Have faith in their greater plan.”

Grateful for how this book was just the balm I needed during this difficult time🧡🥺

I didn‘t like this one as much as the 1st one, b/c I was kind of disappointed about the ending; I wanted this to be the last one. However, I still loved the writing b/c like the first one, it was poetic, such as, the description of the climax battle. It was very immersive, which is why it was my favorite part. The characters were also more flushed out; I enjoyed the interactions between Zélie & Roën.

Magic return to majis, but also to tîtans, royals with magic. Zélie, Amari, and Inan go into battle over Orïsha. Will they find peace? Or will one side annihilate the other?

I loved the first book, so I had to read this one to know how the series ends.

Skies! The sequel was so much better than the first book!! That was one helluva of a cliffhanger! What happens to Zélie?? It has been two years since the release and still no sign of the blurb, cover or even the title in sight!!

The first book is way better than it's sequel. The romance plot that I didn't like from Book 1 is a driving force in Book 2. The text became repetitive and caused me to lose interest in the story. The battle-relates sequences are well-written and put you right in the action. I understand why the book ended the way it did, but with Book 3 still to come it's a bit of a letdown to wait and by then I know I will forget some key details.

*no spoilers* I enjoyed the book. I read it in about 5 days. I enjoyed how there were 3 or 4 constant viewpoints that you got to hear the story from. I would recommend and will read the next one.

How gorgeous is this front cover though. 😍 This spectacular sequel was filled with magic, mystery and a twist. Core characters stayed strong in this and there was an edition of a new lovable rogue. Action and battles the whole way through. When is book no. 3?! 🧡

Not as action-packed as the first installment, but still a good read. The writing is fantastic & the world-building/magic system are really well done & complex. Good use of multiple POV. The plot was somewhat circuitous in places and there was a lot of character development, but some that felt contradictory. An enjoyable read for me, though occasionally a frustrating one. I highly recommend the audiobook, as Bahni Turpin's narration is amazing.

So good! I need more of this story!
I don‘t think I would have liked it as much if I had read the physical book only because of the pronunciations.
It has that feeling like it could be part of reality. I loved the badass female characters. The whole story is developed and the characters have some depth.
Overall excellent and enjoyable.

This one was between a so-so and a pick for me because it took me months to get through it and I found it hard to get deeply invested the way I did with the first book. But it's a pick because it really picked up in the last 100 pages and I'm still invested enough to be excited for the third book and the first movie!

Bits Same! 4y

1. Depends on the book. I tend to hang on to most books in the fantasy and nonfiction genres unless I didn‘t like it. Contemporary fiction and mysteries/thrillers I tend to give away after I‘ve read it.

2. Tagged book!

Honestly, it didn‘t hold up to the first one. I listened to the whole thing, and I like the world enough that I‘ll probably read the third book when it comes out (and support Black femme authors, duh!), but honestly, like almost an entire war could‘ve been solved if Zélie wasn‘t so intentionally against Inan just because he was her ex-bae. Anyone with me? I actually really did enjoy Amari‘s story arc and thought it was realistic. 6/10

kgriffith Yep, I felt 100% the same. 4y

Wow, another book that just blew me away.
The magic system is further developed with more explanations for the existing Maji and the newly made royal descendants of Maji.
The journey they all go on, facing the truth of their actions and emotions that bind them to one another across belief and society are epic and enthralling.
With the ending I can not wait for book 3.
4.5/5 Stars

Finally got to the 2nd in the series. It‘s a lot. Although the story is still strong as the protagonists fight for Orisha, I found myself skipping over the torture and injury portions. It just got to be too much in a book this long. Still, it‘s characters are vibrant and each holds an important part of the story.

🟩 Yes, for years when my 2 boys were babies/toddlers, I probably only read a couple books a year.
🟦 Queen Nehanda in the Legacy of Orisha series. Second book tagged. I can‘t wait to see the Children of Blood and Bone movie (first non-Star Wars Lucas Film!) and for the third book in this series to come out.
🟪 I like both. Depends on the story... sometimes I wish there was more in stand-alones.
