The Relentless Moon
The Relentless Moon: A Lady Astronaut Novel | Mary Robinette Kowal
32 posts | 19 read | 10 to read
Mary Robinette Kowal continues her award-winning Lady Astronaut series, which began with The Calculating Stars and The Fated Sky, with The Relentless Moon. The Earth is coming to the boiling point as the climate disaster of the Meteor strike becomes more and more clear, but the political situation is already overheated. Riots and sabotage plague the space program. The IACs goal of getting as many people as possible off Earth before it becomes uninhabitable is being threatened. Elma York is on her way to Mars, but the Moon colony is still being established. Her friend and fellow Lady Astronaut Nicole Wargin is thrilled to be one of those pioneer settlers, using her considerable flight and political skills to keep the program on track. But she is less happy that her husband, the Governor of Kansas, is considering a run for President. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Bookish Song Nr 53: Hall of Fame

You can go the distance, you can run the mile
You can walk straight through hell with a smile
You could be a hero, you could get the gold
Breaking all the records they thought never could be broke
Yeah, do it for your people, do it for your pride
How you ever gonna know if you never even try?
Do it for your country, do it for your name

Can't stop thinking about Nicole whenever I hear this song.

Alright, why did I wait this long to continue reading this series? All the books have been great so far and this one was as well. This is the perfect genre mix for me: sci-fi and alternate history. It's inclusive, the characters are remarkable and I still remember them after having a very long break between the novels. Some parts were difficult for me to read, since I've been fighting with the same problem as Nicole. But she's great 💙

I just adjusted my reading plans so that they fit better into my new and more lively lifestyle (there are activities besides reading that are fun?!), so I haven't yet finished my current #roll100 but I'll be definitely done by the end of the month.

For October I got The Relentless Moon and am really happy with this roll. Next year the 4th volume will be published and it's good that I can catch up with book number 3 until then.

My current read. A tricky one to pair with yarn, but I couldn't go past this hand dyed yarn by Shirsty Cat Designs, because it's called “The Void Stares Back“. Couldn't be more appropriate for this alt-history post-apocalyptic space mystery novel. #litsycrafters #booksandyarn

rockpools These are gorgeous- perfect pairings! 2y
julesG Wow! Wonderful pairing. What are you going to make from the yarn? 2y
Lauredhel @julesG oh I don't have this yarn! I am tempted but my stash is quite big enough :) 2y

I‘ve loved every single one of the Lady Astronaut books and this one was no different. We follow Nicole Wargin as she goes on a mission to the moon colony while there‘s someone trying to sabotage their home and trips. There‘s a mystery, you get a lot of personal stories about her health as she suffers from anorexia and how she also use to be a spy in the war. Kowal knows how to tell a story and immerse you in the world!

This third book in the Lady Astronauts series follows Elma‘s friend Nicole Wargin, pilot, astronaut, and wife of the governor of Kansas, as she encounters sabotage on Earth and the moon during the first Mars expedition. This novel definitely drags more than the first two and I have a couple questions after finishing, but I loved Nicole and now have a total Lady Astronaut hangover! Up for a Hugo this year for this book and the series!

This third novel in the Lady Astronaut series, nominated for the Hugo Best Novel award, is an excellent mix of sci-fi, alternate history, mystery and thriller. It was hard to put down! #hugoawards #hugo2021

The third book in the Lady Astronaut Series.

The Earth First Movement is sabotaging the international space efforts by causing trouble on Earth and the lunar station, causing accidents, chaos, disease, and casualties. Nicole, the MC of this book (Elma is on the Mars mission), has to find the saboteurs on Moon.

Practically a looked room mystery on a lunar station. It was marvellous seeing Nicole puzzling out whodunit.

Ruthiella This series is the on my list! I need to start it. 3y
julesG @Ruthiella And book 4 won't be out until 2022. 😩 3y

This one‘s right on the border between a Pick and a So-So. It‘s got all the same delectable ingredients as the first two Lady Astronaut novels, but somehow they don‘t produce quite the same flavour. I can look at each component part and tell I should‘ve loved the book, but the sparkle just wasn‘t there. I struggled to pick it up, even once the spy stuff kicked in and I resolved to try really, really hard to love it.

Sadness.

I‘ve been reading THE RELENTLESS MOON for days upon days and I‘ve still got a third of the book to go. Is it really only 384 pages, like Litsy says? It feels waaaaaay longer. I can see how I oughta love it, but I feel like I only creep a couple percentage points further for every long reading session and that‘s kicked my enjoyment meter down quite a few notches.

ETA: LibraryThing says it‘s 544 pages, not 384. That explains the pacing.

BkClubCare Hate it when that happens. I enjoyed her 3y
xicanti @BkClubCare I loved the hell out of that one, and I regular-strength loved THE FATED SKY. I don‘t know why this one‘s creeping along so damned slow. I mean, it‘s a spy thriller! On the moon! 3y
BkClubCare @xicanti maybe you need something else and then come back to it? 3y

xicanti @BkClubCare trouble is, it‘s a library book with a long wait list. I don‘t want to wait weeks to return to it, so I‘m gonna push through. I sure hope I can finish it today. I hate reading slowly. 3y

Well, my second shot kicked my ass. I feel like I‘ve got the flu. Gonna spend my day sleeping, reading, and maybe watching some TV.

Hopefully I can sink into THE RELENTLESS MOON. I started it last night, as pictured, and I dunno if it fits my mood any better than the GGK reread I‘ve paused for now. Argh. I normally read awesome stuff in June, but this year my concentration‘s shot and I can‘t seem to super-duper love anything. 😔

Lreads I‘m sorry you‘re feeling bad. I hope it doesn‘t last too long! Fatigue really hit me after my second vaccination shot. I‘m still glad I got vaccinated. 💕 3y
xicanti @QuietlyLaura a day of the fake flu was definitely better than being hospitalized with COVID! 3y

Another excellent book in the Lady Astronaut series. I love how Kowal plays with the history we know and explains it in her author‘s note. And I loved the cat in this installment!

TheKidUpstairs I loved this one. I think it's my favourite of the three so far 3y
rabbitprincess @TheKidUpstairs I think the first one is still my fave because it is the first, but I did enjoy Nicole‘s narrative voice. 3y

📚 Fantasy because it is the best escape reading.

Yes! I love how they refer to these men here as "so-and-so's husband" ? So often women are reduced to being simply wife, it gives me a smile to see it reversed.

My OverDrive holds came in for this one, so everything else is set aside. I love this series, and I'm so happy to see Nicole take front and centre, I've always liked her character and I enjoy reading from her perspective (and hopefully no more "ready for launch" cheesy innuendo!).

While I missed having the "Lady Astronaut" as the narrator, shifting the perspective to another character kept them focused on what's going on back on Earth vs. the Mars mission. The self-focus of Earth First has hit a boiling point & violent action is taken up through sabotage, an infectious virus, & assassination. The folks on the Moon bear the brunt of most of this, & the story revolves around finding the culprits & surviving the damage done.

I may have actually loved this MORE than the first two. Nicole Wargin was amazing! And Eugene, Myrtle, and Helen really got to shine in their own right too in this one.

This takes place during The Fated Sky and relates some of the events that happened in Earth, but mainly focuses on the Lunar Colony. This book does not pull any punches and it's nonstop from page one. I read this in one go, all 542 pages.

TheSpineView I loved this one too! 4y

Great story with plenty of action and intrigue to pull you in. The 3rd book in The Lady Astronaut series. This one is about Nicole Wargin, wife of a powerful politician, who secures a space on the 1st rocket carrying civilians to the moon. But there is someone(s) out to sabotage the moon colony and Nocole is tasked to find out who it is. Read my full review on my blog at www.thespineview.com. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
