My father passed away this fall and this was a gift from our employees. My husband and I, along with my brother continue to run the weekly newspaper that my dad had worked at since he was 16. We bought it from him 20 years ago but he maintained an “office” in our building until his death at 85. Newspaper, ink and words were in his blood ❤️💔 I can‘t wait to see and read this on our town‘s story walk.

An element of design that I noticed in this book dealt with the composition. Throughout the story, the illustrator displays Jerome's book of words and the categories that they fall into. One page dealt with shot words, two-syllable words, multi-syllable words, etc. It also shows how he shared his knowledge with others as well.

This RF, is a winner of The North Somerset Teachers' Book Award. Jerome loves to collect words while others collect rocks. He picks up new words everywhere has goes, but he does not only want them for himself. Jerome wants to share his collection with all children! This vocabulary rich picture book would be good for RA. The reading may be slightly over what the students can read on their own, so this is the perfect strategy.

Sdemps The Learning To Give website has a guideline for getting the best out of the RA of The Word Collector.

UDL 2.1 Clarify vocabulary and symbols along with EL #14 Simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant both are met with a RA of The Word Collector.

I'd recommend this RF book to any primary school teacher. The reader is taken on a journey with the main character, Jerome. As he begins collecting new words, he starts to understand more about the world around him, and more importantly, himself. This New York Times Best Seller is best used as a RA in the classroom. Reading aloud provides an opportunity to discuss the specific vocabulary your students need to review or learn.

MFlowers It coincides with UDL 2.1 (clarify vocab and symbols) and EL 5 (to teach technical vocab supporting key concepts). You can choose to preteach certain vocabulary words in order to deepen your students understanding of the story.
This website goes in depth on different tactics and lesson plans you can use to accomplish both the UDL and EL standards.

The UDL principle 9.3 regarding developing self-assessment and reflection and the EL principle 5 regarding teaching technical vocabulary supporting key concepts could be met by this picture book. Teachers can have students reflect on a time when they used their words to convey their thoughts/feelings. In addition, teachers can explain unfamiliar terms addressed in the book prior to or after reading in order to promote comprehension.

nquintus Naomi, I think you're spot-on with your chosen UDL principle and ESOL strategy. Both revolve around vocabulary, and that is what this book is all about! The main character loves words and reflects on how they make him feel, and in order to aid in comprehension for our ELs, we will need to highlight and review the meaning of some of the words in the story. Great job! 4y
LauraLeighn I think you summed up the book really nicely and really made it sound appealing . I also like that your focusing on social emotional health by having the students reflect on how their thoughts and feelings can effect themselves and those around them! 4y
dbears1 I really like how you connected the UDL principle to this book. As a teacher we should promote learning vocabulary words as it promotes comprehension.Often times students are reading with knowledge of words. Addressing certain words before reading a book can make the book more enjoyable for ESOL students also. 4y

This activity has students reading more books and finding vocabulary they do not know. The students then look up the words to find out what they mean. This activity is great for learners because they get to choose what they learn.

Great RF about a boy who collects all types of words, accidentally jumbles them together & uses his mess to create powerful meaning and creatively express himself/inspire others. With a RA, this book could be a great tool to build vocabulary and highlight the power of words!

MeaganM @DMoux Omg! That‘s an absolutely adorable activity that is posted in the link. I love how it‘s just like in the book when he strings all the words together. Super cute idea! Must use that in my classroom one day! 5y
DMoux https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/blog-posts/scholasticcom-editors/2018-2019/c... This link provides a lesson plan that uses yarn and index cards to promote new vocabulary. UDL 2.1 and EL 37 can be used through language experience techniques clarifying vocab and symbols. EL‘s can choose vocab words in their native language paired with the English translation for the activity! #ucflae3414su19 5y
DrSpalding Scholastic is a high-quality resource and the vocabulary activity is excellent! This book obviously lens it self to teaching high-level vocabulary. Oral language development is vital to your students reading proficiency. 5y

The Word Collector is a picture book written by Peter H. Reynolds. It is in the Realistic Fiction Genre and would best be used with the read aloud teaching strategy. This book is about a little boy named Jerome who loves words. He collects words that catch his attention. He begins organizing the words and shares them with others.
This website resource gives reasons why students from all communities should engage in RA.

MeaganM UDL principle of 8.3 because one of the purposes of a read aloud is to encourage and assist children in making connections. This is enhanced with the EL strategy 24 which is incorporating culture and language because the main character travels around and reaches all kinds of children. #ucflae3414su19 5y
DrSpalding Lovely image! Kids with books make me smile! Cool resource! The 15 tips for babies and toddlers is also great; we must start them young! Nice EL/UDL alignment. Don‘t forget to use the genre abbreviation. 5y

A fun way to show kids the fun in words! Some great words from the book: blue harmony, silent orchestra, stars, peace, electric! Not only a RA! There are so many great ideas and lessons that can be used with this book! Scholastic has some great lesson plan resources: http://tinyurl.com/yxnu8yg3

#LAE3414SP19

JessicaRosell The Word Collector also addresses UDL 2.3, 2.4, supporting decoding of text, and understanding across languages, and 3.2 highlighting patterns and relationships. Also ESOL 11 by placing language in meaningful context and 14 slower speech.

The Word Collector (RF) written and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds is an amazing book and would be great as a RA in the classroom. This book is about a little boy named Jerome who enjoys collecting words and adding them to his collection. However, a problem soon arises when his word collection becomes too large and the words get jumbled together.

KAdudu Read this amazing book to find out what Jerome does to solve the problem. #lae3414sp19
The UDL principles that align with this book include 2.1 clarify vocabulary and symbols.
Use EL 20 list most important words on board.
Here is a great resource to use along with the book.

The Word Collector by Peter H. Reynolds is an inspiring RF picture book. The main character takes you through a journey of words. Big words, small words, words that were marvelous to say. It shares the message that words can have an impact; it is refreshing to read. This book would be amazing as a RA. #lae3414sp19

jessicabaksh UDL principle 9.1: promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation and ESOL strategy 11: place language in meaningful context pair well with this book 5y

The Word Collector (RF, NYT Best Seller) written and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds is newly one of my favorite books. Like I‘ll be practicing tomorrow, this book would be best as a RA at any elementary grade level, particularly with all the new vocabulary this book has to offer, but especially because each age will have their own impressions of what happened to Jerome, what he learned, and how he dealt with it. #LAE3414sp19

cwright After going over vocabulary from the book (ESOL 49), this classroom activity (https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/blog-posts/scholasticcom-editors/2018-2019/celebrate-national-learn-a-word-day-with-word-collector/) allows students to become their own word collectors! Addressed here are UDL principles 7.1, 1.1, 2.1, 3.4, 5.2, and ESOL 11, 37, and 46. 5y
gnewman @cwright it was awesome getting to see you do your TeachLive! I also did mine on this, and it was nice to see your take on it! This book is definitely great for a RA. 5y

This RF New York Times Best seller book, which would be great for a RA, is about a boy named Jerome who loves to learn and collect new words. This book can be used in the classroom to benefit students by showing them that words impact us in everyday life, and that reading and learning new words expand our knowledge of the world around us.
#LAE3414sp19

Zmohammad https://www.scholastic.com/kids/book/the-word-collector-by-peter-h-reynolds/ This website provides various forms of activities to engage students after the RA. UDL strategy 5.2 (multiple tools for construction and composition) and ESOL strategy 46 (discovery learning activities) align with the lesson plan from the website where students can make their own word collage and personalize the meaning they obtained from the story. (edited) 5y

This wonderful RF picture book is great for the early elementary grades and can be used as a RA! Peter H. Reynolds does a great job telling the story of a young boy who collects words as a hobby. Throughout the story there are words flying all over the pages. ESOL standard #20 and UDL principle 2.1 would work great for this book because of the large amount of vocabulary words. #LAE3414SP19

Olsonashley19 Not only is The Word Collector a wonderful book but it was also on the NY times best seller list! Scholastic offers a few wonderful activities to go along with this book. Attached is a "National Learn a Word Day" activity! https://www.scholastic.com/content/dam/scholastic/kids/pdf/the-word-collector/na... 5y
DrSpalding Better job explaining the universal design principle here however in most posts you needed to explain them in more detail. How do the universal design principles align to your resources. You utilized excellent resources like scholastic, publishers sites, author sites other than Scholastic and national organizations. These are high-quality! 5y

Have you ever had an obsession with collecting your favorite items? I know I have! In The Word Collector by Peter H. Reynolds (RF, RA, and *), Jerome has an obsession with collecting words. This cute picture book is great for a read aloud, especially for kindergarten students. During the read aloud, students are exposed to many new words, and they get to see how sharing can benefit others.

gnewman This book beautifully illustrations many different words that exist, and it shows the students that words can be used in a number of different ways in order to enhance their contexts and to make them more meaningful. In order to demonstrate this idea, I have found a great activity for the class to participate in after a read aloud has been done. It comes from the publisher's website, and it demonstrates the impact a single word can make. 5y
gnewman This leads me to UDL Principles 2.1: Clarify vocabulary and symbols, 2.2: Clarify syntax and structure, and 1.2: Offer alternatives for auditory information. As for an ESOL Strategy, it encompasses 11: Place language in meaningful context. #LAE3414sp19 5y
gnewman The activity that I want to highlight is called I Spy Words, and the link is https://www.wordcollector.org/schoolresources 5y

Such a great picture book about the power of words. I could relate to the little boy who collected words. I kept lists of words that I loved as a kid. I still write down words that I find particularly beautiful or compelling or dynamic. The perfect book for any child who loves language.

The Word Collector is such a great RF book! It is by Peter H. Reynolds. Jerome discovers the magic of words around him. He might learn difficult and impressive words, but he realizes that the simplest words have the most impact. A great ESOL strategy would be number 5 since there are so much vocabulary in this book for your students to learn! I would have fun activities for the kids to learn the tricky words in this book.

AmyPerezCubas The students can be in groups and try to come up with the right definitions for each word together! The UDL I would work with is 3.3 because I would come up with ways to guide them and process the words using the pictures in the book! #UCFLAE3414SuB18 6y

This book is so good!!! Other people may collect stamps, but Jerome collects words. From a billboard, book, just about anywhere. He categorizes and scrapbooks with his words, discovering new ways to use them along the way and sharing them with everyone he meets. It‘s beautiful, it‘s relatable, and it‘s diverse! ❤️Highly recommend!
