The One and Only Ivan | Katherine Applegate
post image

Great F book to eather RA, IR or share it in LC.
It is based on the true story of Ivan, a gorilla that was in captivity for 27 years. This book is told in the first person by Ivan him-self; it is a story of family, courage, freedom, protection and love. It is a must-read book for animal lovers, and it will be great to add to any library. The story will let you feel and imagine his life.
Award: The Newbery Medal and Theme: Animal protection

Jennymmm Soon to be a motion picture (Disney)

Hip hop speaks to children: a celebration of poetry with a beat | Nikki Giovanni, Michele Scott, Willie Perdomo, Tony Medina
post image

Genre P. Theme of the book Is mix, but is mostly about inclusion, history, and acceptance. “Hip Hop Speaks to children; a celebration of poetry with a beat” is a beautiful book that introduces poetry to children; It can be used to compare and contrast the different styles of poetry writing or as part of a history lesson. I enjoy them so much; some make me laugh; some make me cry. It even has martin Luther king Jr “I have a dream“ full speech.

Jennymmm One of my favorites was “BOOKS” I definitely relate to it. I also enjoy “We wear the mask” and “Who will cry?” This book introduces children to the history of hip-hop and poetry. It comes with an audio CD to complement the reading, with songs, poems, and speeches.

The principle of UDL 3.2 Highlight pattern, critical features, big ideas and relationships, and the ESOL Strategies is 36. Ask numerous questions that require higher-level thinking re

This amazing RF and LC book is a must read for all. This book has been on the New York Times Best sellers list! Isabella, a young eleven year old who often feels torn between her divorced parents. She feels different from others because she is both black and white. An eye opening novel that is extremely important for those who want to learn more about current events!
#UCFLAE3414SP20.

carolinem This book would be great with ESOL strategies 2 which is prompting cooperation (small groups). This book can create great conversations among students about current events that are happening today such as the Black Lives Matter Movement. The UDL principles that go along with this book are 3.1 which activate or supply background knowledge. Students can connect the text to the world by reading this book. 2d
carolinem Here is a great website that has great discussion questions to help guide conversations http://sharondraper.com/bookdetail.asp?id=75 2d
Ashley_B Wasn‘t this book great? Honestly, it was an eye opener for me being a white mother, myself, to a “blended” boy. Sometimes, we forget how difficult life can be for those who look different. It really makes me sad. Anyways, I like your resource, I chose a different one so it‘s good to compare. I also like the UDL you provided, good choice for this book. 2d
carolinem @Ashley_B this book is fantastic!! I also read your post and loved the pic that you submitted ! 1d

She loves to hear her mama read. ❤️🐶
This Caldecott Honor award winning, poem PB, by Liz Garton Scanlon and illustrated by Marla Frazee, would be great for a RA to students. It makes connections with people, places, and things in the world around us and would align well with UDL 1.3 (Offer alternatives for visual information) and ESOL strategy 4 (Link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge).

Sharing this book with my blended baby. This book is about an eleven-year-old girl, Izzy, who is being torn between divorced parents while experiencing a feeling of not belonging anywhere because she‘s not just one or the other, but she‘s both, black and white. This story is an eye opener for those who are unaware of racial profiling and will allow children to get a better understanding.
#UCFLAE3414SP20

Ashley_B This RF book would go along with ESOL strategy 2 (promote cooperation) during literature circle in the classroom. Students will be able to relate to Izzy‘s struggles and understand her situation more than we know! This book hasn‘t received an award yet, but I know there‘s one coming! UDL 5.2 (use multiple tools for construction and composition)

F and LC book. This book can open conversations about discrimination, differences, respect, courage, bullying, feelings, judgment, and so on. The theme of the book is Empowerment. It is the story of Melody, a brilliant 10-year-old girl, trap in her own body, wanting to say and express so many things but unable to do it. It is heartbreaking, but at the same time, it inspires greatness. She never gave up and found a way to be heard.

Jennymmm UDL 8.3 Foster colaboration and community and ESOL strategy # 6 continue monitoring student comprehension.

HappyMaddy I really enjoyed this book. This is very eye opening for students to learn about acceptance for others with a disability. Also a great example of the harm of bullying & judging others to promote a healthy learning environment & developing community. 3d

This NF, RA picture book is a great addition to any classroom. “The Girl with the Mind for Math: The Story of Raye Montague“ is a beautiful and inspirational truth story, about a black African-American woman that defied all odds, in a time black people, especially women were discriminated. The theme is courage and perseverance. Award received The Amelia Bloomer Book, NSTA Outstanding Science Trade Book, NSTA Best STEM Trade Books for Students.

Macca the Alpaca | Matt Cosgrove
post image

This F book is a story about how Maca the Alpaca teaches a bully, Harmer the llama, that being the biggest and the strongest doesn‘t make you the best at everything. In the end, Harmer and Maca come to an understanding and hug it out. Students can learn the importance of kindness and never judging a book by its cover from this story. A PR would be great for this story so one student can read Maca and the other can read Harmer.
#ucflae3414sp20

Keishla.O UDL principles 8.3 (fostering collaboration and community) can be implemented during/after the reading.
ESOL strategy 15 (Reinforce the key ideas you present again and again) can be implemented during this reading.

This RF book would be really fun if read as a DR. In this story, Mary, a spunky little girl has fabulous style. On her first day of school she learned that nobody there had any glam. Soon, thanks to her, everybody had glam! At recess everybody realized that they were overdressed for outside play. A valuable lesson that they learned after this is that sometimes less is more!
#ucflae3414sp20

Keishla.O UDL strategies 7.1 (optimize individual choice and autonomy) can be used during/after this DR by allowing students to choose their own fun outfits to wear.
ESOL strategy 17 (Provide contextual support through audio visuals, models,
demonstrations, realia, body language and facial expressions) can be used when demonstrating the classroom glam time in the book via the DR.
https://youtu.be/Qs19IaMc4bY this video can be played during the DR.

Pickpick

This story of RF is heartwarming, Matt De La Peña takes us along with a boy & his nana. The illustrator, Christian Robinson lets us feel beauty in everything with the characters. This story was worthy of both the 2016 Newbery Medal & Caldecott Honor Book. I had the opportunity to really dig deep with this story preparing for my Teach Live read aloud focusing on the roles of author & illustrator. UDL (2.1, 8.1, 3.3) ESOL (1,6,11) #UCFLAE3414SP20
