LaGasseSam1996 I think in a lesson like this you would use ESOL 6. Student might become confused quicker when talking about a man they may know very little to nothing about. I think checking in with the student more than usually would benefit them. ESOL 13 I think is important as well. Giving ESOL students a preview lesson on Vincent Van Gogh will allow them to understand his art better. 5y

Kcallihan I have always loved this book and I think you did an amazing job explaining how to use it within a classroom. I think it was very important that you included limiting distractions if allowing students to read this in a group setting. LaGasseSam1996 When doing an author study note taking is very important. You want to keep a list of information you want to use. ESOL 9 would be used in this case. It would allow students to have the note taking skills to complete the author study. Note taking also allows the student to be able to look back at their notes to quickly clarify something. 5y

If you are going to do a lesson plan that involves the ocean or any of the things in the ocean you will need to teach that vocabulary to ESOL students. ESOL 5 would be important for the student so they can place the meaning of the word with the picture. ESOL 17 would also be helpful to students they would see the plant or animal and make that connection. 5y

The Giver is a SF book written by Lois Lowry and has received the Newberry award. I feel like this novel would do well in a LC setting. I feel students would enjoy reading it together and talking about it. This book is about a utopian society that turns out to not be as “utopian” as it seemed. #LAE3414sp19

My children read it in third grade and I thought it was a bit early however we were able to discuss many aspects of the story and I think it was an opportunity for growth! Literature circles would be best however you could also read it aloud. 5y

Leaving these words on the board where the ESOL student can refer back to them is also a good idea. 5y

Ugly Duckling | Jerry Pinkney

The Ugly Duckling is retold and illustrated by Jerry Pinkney. This version of TL has won the Caldecott. This traditional story is about a duckling who just doesn‘t belong in the group he is in. But by the end of the story something amazing happens to that sad little “ducking”. I think this book would make an excellent RA story for younger students.

UDL principal 3.1 is what I think can be used really well with this book. Some kids know what a duckling looks like, but if they don‘t you can easily pull up a picture of a duckling and then a baby swan. This will show students that there is a difference between the two animals. 5y

Most students have seen a picture of a baby duck before but if they haven‘t you can show the picture of a real baby duck and then a swan. The student will then be able to connect the baby ducks in the picture to the ones in the storybook as well as the baby swan. 5y

This allows members of the group to summarize what happened in each chapter. This can rotate around the group as the book is read. 5y

LaGasseSam1996 UDL 2.3 would work with the lesson plan above. To summarize the text you first need to decode what is major and what is a minor part of the text. Not everything in each chapter is an important part of the story. The student needs to be able to determine was is useful and what may not be. 5y

LaGasseSam1996 ESOL 2 works well in small groups which is what a LC is. I think working in the group will allow the ELL student to really understand the text and will be able to have clarification from their group mates on anything they do not understand fully. 5y

LaGasseSam1996 UDL 2.1 is also used in this lesson plan. We need to help students make since of the new vocabulary. Fiction and nonfiction are very easy to confuse. If we show what makes fiction fake and what makes nonfiction not fake it may help them understand better. 5y

This book is about the life of Theodor Seuss Geisel or better know as Dr. Seuss. This biography is kid friendly and shows students how one of their favorite authors came to be. #LAE3414sp19

LaGasseSam1996 The UDL I think would work the best is UDL 1.3 when used in the form of an author study. I think students would enjoy learning about Dr. Seuss just as much as they would enjoy making the information they received from this book into a poster, PowerPoint or any other media. 5y

Pocket poems is a book about, well, poems! This P book was selected by Bobbi Katz and illustrated by Marylin Hafner. This book is very interesting. You can pick out a poem at random and read it aloud to the class which is why I think this book would be an amazing RA book. #LAE3414sp19

LaGasseSam1996 This book would work well with UDL 2.1. This book has a lot of different poems inside it that cover a range of words. For example, if the word ‘trudge‘ is a vocabulary word you could read the poem “Call Me Polar Bear” in the book. 5y
