This is a Caldecott winner and was written and illustrated by Molly Bang. This book would be good to use as a reader‘s theater in order to aid EL students using strategy #17 by providing support through body language and facial expressions.

This book is about a little boy, along with a swarm of bees and his town, who all get upset but then come together to feel better. This is a fantastic book for EL students to encourage self-talk with strategy #3..

MeaganM I can see teachers exposing students to the bond of community and working together as a way to open the door for EL students to discuss their own culture and community. https://www.thepathway2success.com/how-to-teach-positive-self-talk/. #ucflae3414su19 (edited) 5y

The Big Snow is a traditional literature book that won the Caldecott Medal for illustrations. It was written and illustrated by Bert and Elmer Hader. It follows the journeys of many woodland animals as they began to realize that winter is approaching and start
planning accordingly. This story would pair with EL strategy #43 that requires students to underline or highlight key words or important facts in written assignments.

MeaganM http://www.adlit.org/strategies/23332/

This website offers suggestions for incorporating selective highlighting. This could be taught in tangent with a science unit for animal adaptations and utilize UDL 1.3 to offer alternatives to visual processing. A cause and effect chart would be effective. #ucflae3414su19

MeganKlein This book would be awesome for teaching students how to visualize! Many students living in Florida don‘t really know much about snow and the season of winter, and I think this book would be a great way to teach students about those things. I really like your resource and I learned some new information about selective highlighting! 5y

It‘s about an unimaginary friend who is desperate to be a child‘s imaginary friend. He goes on a journey to meet the perfect friend. This book would be a great storytelling opportunity because you can create all of the characters and fun settings that Beekle encounters.

MeaganM I love this website! It gives a list of activity suggestions to accompany the book. It also gives plenty of discussion questions to follow the storytelling. The Giver is a Newbery Winner. It is in the Science Fiction genre and is written by Lois Lowry. The Giver, while controversial, is a dystopian novel that intrigues young adult readers as it is about a young boy who is living in a world that promotes “sameness” in order for everyone to live in peace. After he inherits the memories, he starts seeing the world in a much different way. This novel would be a great way to teach Independent Reading.

UDL 2.5 would be useful to illustrate through multiple media.

MeaganM There are very informative videos about Rosa Parks that could be adapted through a variety of grade levels. This would be vital for your EL learners for strategy #16 to integrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities. The following website is a great resource to learn strategies for an effective read aloud. Https://www.advancementcourses.com/blog/readaloud-strategies #ucflae3414su19 (edited) 5y
MeganKlein @MeaganM, I could totally see this book being read to students during Black History Month! Students would be very interested to learn more about Rosa Parks and her courageous acts. Also, for a writing activity, students could even write a paragraph or two in the perspective of Rosa Parks. Students would basically put themselves in her shoes and describe how they would feel if they were living during the same time she was. Great book choice! 5y
DrSpalding While your resource notes that storytelling and read aloud are considered synonymous, which is incorrect, the rest of the information is helpful! I like the idea of connecting this book to social studies and a writing activity. This could be used in many grade levels! 5y
