Waiting is a F, Caldecott and Geisel award winning book by Kevin Henkes about a stuffed animal pig, bear, puppy, and rabbit waiting by a window for something to happen. abbie-cadabbie The fact that this story is both a Geisel and Caldecott winner intrigues me! I will definitely be picking this up, as well as adding it to my classroom library in the future! Using this book as a RA to teach students about patience is definitely a great idea! 4y

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is a F picture book written by Judi Barrett and illustrated by Ron Barrett about a small town named Chewandswallow where it rains food. As great as food falling from the sky sounded initially, it caused problems that the people of Chewandswallow now have to face. An activity that I would like to do with my students after doing a RA would be for them to make newspaper articles from the Chewandswallow newspaper.

Stellaluna is a F picture book written and illustrated by Jane Cannon. This book tells the story of a young bat named Stellaluna who gets separated from her mother and ends up growing up with birds instead of bats. This book would be great for a RA and to incorporating multiple subjects into a lesson. I like the idea of having students learn about bats and birds and doing a comparison and contrast graphic organizer.

Journey is a Caldecott honor F wordless picture book by Aaron Becker. This book follows a young girl and her “journey” through a fantasy land. I believe this book would be great for a RT and for my students to create a script because there are no words in this book. Students can take turns being the narrators and the little girl main character.

This NF book, You Wouldn‘t Want to Live Without Cell Phones written by Jim Pipe and illustrated by Rory Walker informs readers about life before cell phones. This book goes into detail about history before cell phones. It is a comical and interesting book to get kids interested in history. Mr Wuffles is a SF, Caldecott honor book written and illustrated by David Wiesner. This book tells the tale of a cat, Mr Wuffles, and his interaction with aliens who come into his house. This book is very good at helping kids infer and imagine what characters are going to do or say because there are very few words in this book.

I think a great idea for this book would be for students to IR and then create their own speech bubbles, or dialogue, for the mostly wordless book.

This Is Not My Hat is a F, Caldecott Award winning book written and illustrated by Jon Klassen. This book follows a little fish who stole a hat from a big fish and his journey underwater. I think this would be a good book for a PR. Science could be incorporated into this lesson plan by having students study the environments the animals in this story live in with their partners.

The Watermelon Seed is a cute, humorous picture book about a crocodile who loves watermelons but is fearful of swallowing a watermelon seed. This F, Theodor Suess Geisel award winning book is written and illustrated by Greg Pizzoli.

This fantasy Caldecott winning book tells the story of a young boy who wakes up one night to the sound of a train outside his window. When he boards, he meets other kids, all awaiting a trip to the North Pole. When I was in 1st grade we did a Polar Express night at my school where we watched the movies in our pjs and drank hot chocolate. #UCFLAE3414F19

This SF book written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg follows two boys who are home while their parents go out for the evening and come across a magical board game. When they start to play the game they go on a crazy adventure with many obstacles, but they must finish the game.

This SF novel written and illustrated by Jeanne DuPrau tells the futuristic story where people live underground to avoid disasters above ground. In the city of Ember they are running out of supplies and energy. The main characters, Lina and Doom form a plan to escape the city which takes them through an incredible adventure. The City of Ember won the Mark Twain Award in 2006. This book would be great as a IR. #UCFLAE3414F19

This F, Newbery Winning book written by Kate DiCamillo and illustrated by Timothy Basil Ering is about a brave mouse named Despereaux and his journey to save a human princess named Pea from rats. I read this book in 5th grade and remember quickly flipping through the pages to find out what happens next.

The girls spend most of their time in Oakland out of the house and exploring the area and learning about the Black Panther Party.

This RF novel written by Sharon M Draper tells the story of Izzy, a middle school girl who is struggling with her identity with being biracial and her divorced parents and extended family. I highly recommend this modern story because to have in your classroom library because it promotes diversity and is a hard book to put down.

This B book written by David Stabler and illustrated by Doogie Horner tells the hilarious and true stories of the childhoods of our U.S. presidents. This is a great book to get kids interested about U.S. history. It is always a plus when you can hit on multiple subjects in one lesson, which this book does. I think this would be a great book to get students into groups to a do RT chapter by chapter.

In this novel written by Roald Dahl and illustrated by Quentin Blake, an orphan named Sophie meets a Big Friendly Giant (BFG) and learns all about the life of giants And their crazy vocabulary. This book won Germany‘s only state-funded literacy award, the “Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis”.

This great RF book, Last Stop on Market Street, written by Matt de la Peña and illustrated by Christian Robinson is about a young boy named CJ and his grandma and their bus travels. It conveys a theme of being grateful for what you have. The awards it has won including the 2016 Caldecott, Coretta Scott, and Newbery awards should give an indication about how great of a book this is to add to your classroom library.
