Say Something | Peter H. Reynolds

Pickpick

Say something would be a fabulous choice for a RA in the classroom! This RF book teaches students to use their voice & speak up on topics they‘re passionate about! This book also teaches our students “speaking up” doesn‘t always require your voice, there are many ways we can make a difference through our actions. 🙌🏼 I would teach this book using the UDL principle 3.1(activate or supply background knowledge)

Vanvlieta I would use this UDL principle by creating a discussion with students about the ways they have used their voice/ actions to stand up for what they believed in. I would use ESOL strategy 1(use pre-reading activities to activate former knowledge) as well. https://www.readingrockets.org/article/103-things-do-during-or-after-reading #UCFLAE3414SP21 💬🗯🗣 3y
MFlowers Yes! We love Peter H. Reynolds here! 3y

This TL book is too cute! It‘s a spin on the original “Little Red Riding Hood” and totally worth the read. I would use this book as a RA in the classroom. I would implement UDL principle 3.1(activate or supply background knowledge) & ESOL strategy 1 (use pre-reading activities to activate former knowledge) . http://meridithmeermanchildrenliterature.blogspot.com/2013/04/traditional-litera... #UCFLAE3414SP21 👩🏼‍🦰👵🏼🐺

KellyR This seems like such a fun book to read to the class especially because the cover alone seems diverse compared to the typical Little Ride Riding Hood girl. I think it is important to push society's idea of normalization and allow students to express themselves. 3y
DrSpalding Your summary needed a little more information! I am adding this book to my stack because I am intrigued. 3y

One More Sheep | Russell Ayto, Mij Kelly

Pickpick

This poetry story would make for a silly and engaging RA in the classroom. This story is about a man named Sam who has 10 sheep, and every night he tries to count them before he goes to bed to make sure he has them all. The problem is that counting them makes him very sleepy. This is bad news when theres a mysterious “sheep” asking to be let in & hes unable to figure out if its the “10th” sheep he left outside, or if its an unwelcome visitor😳

Vanvlieta This story could be used in a math lesson! It would be a great story to introduce counting, or provide extra practice! I would teach this story using UDL principles 3.2( highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships) & ESOL strategy 4(use visual aids) by counting on my fingers during the counting scenes. https://prek-math-te.stanford.edu/counting/using-picture-books-counting #UCFLAE3414SP21 🐑🔢🐺 3y
KellyR This is book is so cute! I think it is pretty neat reading books that could be used a variety of subjects. I think this may get students excited to learn about the topic especially if math is not their favorite subject. 3y
DrSpalding What a great idea to use quality children‘s literature in other subject areas like math. 3y

This HF book is AMAZING. What a fabulous book that can be used as a RA in the classroom. When I tell you I felt mind blown at the end, i mean it! This story is based on a true account (which makes it even more shocking). This story truly shows how small decisions can have huge consequences, and how chance & fate play roles in our lives.

Vanvlieta I would teach this story using the UDL principle 3.2(highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships) & ESOL strategy 1(use pre-reading activities to activate former knowledge) https://blog.advancementcourses.com/classroom-activities/develop-reading-skills/ #UCFLAE4314SP21 🐱🚢 (edited) 3y
DrSpalding You included a helpful resource and certainly enticed the reader of your post to want to read this awesome book! I am a huge titanic fan and this historical event can be taught in social studies! Why not use a wonderful read aloud during this content area? Just do it. 3y

This Biography would make for a great RA in the classroom. This inspirational story can teach students about women‘s rights. This book has so much history woven into the each page! Teachers can use this story as a read aloud when teaching various social studies lessons. You HAVE to read it! I would suggest UDL principle 2.1(clarify vocabulary and symbols) & ESOL strategy 5(check frequently for understanding)

DrSpalding Wouldn‘t this be a wonderful book in a social studies unit about historical figures? Even better wouldn‘t it be an excellent read aloud during a wonder women in history unit? Be sure to explain your web resources. 3y

This silly rhyming story is about the well known, Goldie Locks, who catches the Chicken Pox! This story intertwines various beloved nursery rhyme characters. “Goldie Locks Has Chicken Pox” would make a fun RT! Students would find this story engaging and funny, while connecting with the characters that make appearances throughout the book! I would use UDL principle 3.2(highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships.)

Vanvlieta & ESOL strategy 1 (use pre-reading activities to activate former knowledge) https://www.readingrockets.org/article/readers-theater-giving-students-reason-re... #UCFLAE3414SP21 🧸👱🏼‍♀️🌡 3y
TabathaA Another one I am adding to my list. It looks very cute and addresses an issue that we are likely to experience while teaching elementary school students. There is a multitude of lessons you can work into this as well - possibly doing a compare and contrast to the original Goldie Locks and the Three Bears. I also love the thought of creating and acting out an RT. 3y
DrSpalding What a great version of this classic traditional literature piece. Readers theater is such a wonderful teaching strategy and you found a quality resource! Make sure to expand on these resources. 3y

This NY Times Best selling book is FUN & GOOFY. This story teaches our students about emotions & that it‘s okay to feel different each day. It allows students to be aware of their emotions and it describes in detail what may cause sudden changes in our moods. I think this book could be a fun RA when introducing SEL into the classroom. (There‘s also an interactive spin face on the last page for students to use!) 💛🎭

Vanvlieta I would implement UDL principle 3.1 (activate or supply background knowledge) by discussing moods with the class and how certain ones make us feel & what we can do to calm ourselves when in a bad mood. & ESOL strategy 1 (use pre-reading activities to activate former knowledge). #UCFLAE3414SP21 https://www.thepathway2success.com/25-ways-to-integrate-social-emotional-learnin... 3y

Blackout | John Rocco

This Caldecott award winning book shares a story about a family who experiences a blackout in New York City. When all electronics and lights are turned off due to this blackout, the family learns what it‘s like to enjoy each other‘s company & spend quality time together without any distractions. This RF story would be best shared as a RA. I would implement the UDL principle 3.1(activate or supply background knowledge)

Vanvlieta & ESOL strategy 1 (use pre-reading activities to activate former knowledge). This could be done by asking the students if they have ever experienced a black out, or any time when their electricity went out, like during a Hurricane (if you teach in FL). #UCFLAE3414SP21 https://strategiesforspecialinterventions.weebly.com/activating-prior-knowledge1... 3y
DrSpalding You are correct that this is realistic fiction. I like the idea of using this during a weather unit and connecting the story to the real world. As you have learned throughout this course, making text to world connections is vital for comprehension. This is a helpful resource about activating prior knowledge which is considered best practice and you aligned it beautifully with your English learner strategy. 3y

This Caldecott honor book would be great for PR. The short sentences makes it easy for partners to read every other line. This precious (RF) story is about an older cat who gets a new kitty sibling who he teaches everything too, until one day the older cat passes on & leaves the younger cat with his wisdom to share with future siblings down the road. (Not going to lie, this book made me tear up... lol)

Vanvlieta This book does have an element of sadness to it as it shows the life cycle. This book would best be read using partner reading. This allows our students to comprehend what is being read while taking turns with a buddy. This Judy Newman award winning book would be an amazing add to any elementary classroom library. I believe this book would make a great RA. Tom Percival did a fabulous job explaining anxiety/worry to young readers, which will help them understand social emotional learning. Having books like this are so important in your classroom because we want our students to feel comfortable & be able to find text they can relate too.

Vanvlieta This RF book shows that everyone can have a worry from time to time, but talking about it with someone you can trust can help ensure the worries won‘t hang around for long!
