Saturday last I landed on Netflix and binged this series. Then I saw the series was based on a German book and the translated book had a short library hold, and I had to go there. Although the series kinda-sorta aligned with the book, there were significant changes in the adaption. The book had more in-depth backstories for the adults in the story, and we were better able to ‘hear‘ the conversations in their heads.
Compelling, dark German thriller with no comic relief. This is the kind of story that makes me take a long look at my life and seriously assess how many weapons I can carry on my person without being crazy. ? Because you might just get kidnapped by a psychopath and drug off to be his bunker wife to replace the last kidnapped wife. The story is told in first person by the "wife" who escaped, the father of the first ⬇️
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
This psychological thriller was disturbing and shockingly creepy but such a good read!😱
Dear Child was a gripping, chilling read (and a quick one!) to devour on a dark, stormy night. If you‘re in the mood for a charged thriller and you can cope with all the triggers (cruelty, violence against women and children, etc.), this is a good one to try. Wow, just wow.
Great book, and a great pick for #lmpbc
Round 1 is done for me, can‘t wait to see the next pick!
This dark and twisty novel set in Germany is one of the best psychological thrillers I‘ve read in years. Hausmann packs a lot of gut punches into her debut novel, and I was happy to accept them. This is the best kind of thriller - a true page turner that will have you reading into the wee hours and sleeping with the lights on. I want to say more, but the less you know about this one the better. Just read it. 5⭐️
My GR giveaway book - so it‘s slow at first and it took me a minute to get into it, but it definitely picks up and becomes this major mystery thriller creepfest.
Not my fave but it was still totally worth reading!
Y‘ALL! I won a Goodreads giveaway!! This never happens 😂😍😊😁
This definitely had the feel of “Room”. I was thoroughly invested in this story and finding out what happened. The epilogue made me very emotional. The only complaint I have is that it felt like it dragged a lot.
Finished The Passengers, I‘ll post a review later along with a review of another book I finished the other day as well. Starting this one next :)
A woman held captive with two children finally escapes and calls herself Lena, which is also the name of a woman who went missing years ago.
But Lena‘s family is certain this woman is NOT their Lena.
Who is this woman, and who are the children who had been forced to live this unimaginable life?
Def. gave me Room vibes, which is one of my favorite books, but also had much more of a suspense feel to it.
I stayed up past midnight to finish!
Oh my. Read this one as soon as you can. Here is the link to my gr review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/3551520503?book_show_action=false&from_rev...

What in the world did I just read?! I happened across this book in my local library and holy cow am I so glad I did! I had no idea what was going on in the book and when I had an idea it was absolutely wrong! The last ten or fifteen pages wrapped the book up and blew me away! Definite 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟!
It‘s too nice outside (finally) to not continue to sit here and be engulfed in this one!
I always hear good things about this book, so here I go! 🖍
Dark, page-turning, and plot twisting, this novel describes the aftermath of a woman who escapes her kidnapper. Some flashbacks include her time in captivity and alternate points of view from other characters. With this evidence, the reader has enough information to try to put together who the abductor could be. I don‘t like long soliloquies at the end of thrillers that explain everything, but it did keep me engaged. Good, but not Gone Girl/ Room.
Holy forking shirtballs people! 😱 If you like psychological thrillers you won‘t be disappointed. Now, I‘m gonna need some time to digest what I just read😬
Many reviewers have rated this well. I dislike a lot of popular thrillers so this is just me coming from a place of very particular tastes. May your experience be better than mine, should you choose to pick this one up.
Kept me guessing until the end but lacked a bit of the “heart“ that makes me truly engrossed and attached to the characters.
Book 154 I listened to Dear Child and originally mistook it for a story like The Room. Dear Child is less about how the captured will escape their prison and more about how they got in. It's a typical suspense/thriller novel. It kept me guessing. Even when I thought I had figured it out, I was wrong. I recommend it to those who like the genre, and I will watch for more from Hausmann.
Comparisons to Room by Emma Donoghue, one of my favorites of all time, are spot-on! I loved this thriller, and found it to be riveting, believable, and creepy. I also enjoyed the German-ness of it. Highly recommended 🌟
Some definite creepy vibes here, but not quite as effective as it might have been (not sure if some detail was lost in translation?). The shifting perspectives made for a quick, compelling enough read though! 3.5 ⭐️
Conditions this morning are 👌🏻
A friend made some creamy lemon-blueberry puff pastry and dropped it off. I have lemon drop black tea and a new (riveting!!) read. ☕️ 📖
Dear Child starts with a missing girl and a car accident, and spirals into a story of abduction, obsession, and creepy children. It is told from three points of view, which make the story quite fast-paced and engaging. If you enjoyed Room by Emma Donoghue, you might enjoy Dear Child too! 3.5⭐
I had to read this book real slowly, because I was haunted by every detail. This was very “Gone Girl meets Room.” So if you found yourself intrigued by those two novels you should pick up Dear Child.
A psychological thriller that kicks it up a notch from Emma Donohue's Room. Set in Germany, a woman held captive for months is rescued along with two other children. As the group attempt to heal from their ordeal while the media scrutinizes their story, more secrets are revealed concerning their captor that connects to another missing woman and a bereaved father. For fans of Karen Dionne's The Marsh King's Daughter.
Never ever sleeping again. Ever. Nope. Nope. Nope. Thoroughly horrified... and I like it! Lol! For all the lovers of psycho books... here‘s one for you! Full review at Scrappymags.com ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Shortest Summary Ever: Lena has been held hostage along with her 2 children. One night the unthinkable happens - she‘s free, only to wind up in hospital, hit by a car. What happened, who is she, and is the nightmare truly over?
This was such an intense thriller.

This was quite a read! The subject matter may be difficult for some (there are some potential triggers) but it is so well written, and the characters have such depth to them. It's like the novel Room but deeper.
It is set to be released on October 6, 2020.
This riveting pageturner reminds me of Emma Donouhue‘s Room, but with more perspectives-& a lot more twists! Told across 3 perspectives, the book opens in a hospital after a hit & run accident. A young girl is there with some alarming answers to basic questions, a woman fades in & out of consciousness & a father races to discover if the woman is the daughter that went missing almost 14 years earlier. Surprising & exciting, I couldn‘t put it down!
I found this to be an incredible, completely engrossing read. It‘s so well written, with a plot that keeps you on tenterhooks throughout. It grabs you from the very start and doesn‘t let go. Dealing with the trauma of abduction, violence and fear it‘s not an easy read at times but so compelling.
A fantastically chilling and original thriller….this is a must read.
@veritysalter omgosh 😱 what a wonderful surprise!! ❤️ ❤️ I totally did not see this coming, and it was so thoughtful and kind of you! 🥰Thank you, love! #LitsyLove
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A fabulously gripping thriller, superbly translated. A woman escapes from a cabin in the woods where she has been held captive with her daughter, she says her name is Lena. Lena has been missing for thirteen years, but when her father goes to identify her, he says she‘s not his missing daughter, but the young girl with her is the image of Lena. Who is the man who has kept them captive and what secrets are they hiding.
Starting ‘Dear Child‘ (original German: Liebes Kind) that I won in a Twitter competition by Quercus Books.
