Work was actually done on my NaNo2020 project today. I think I need to stop worrying about what I‘m “supposed” to write, and write when the characters want to do. I‘m trying to push them in one direction or the other and it‘s not working. How is everyone else‘s Tuesday going? Last Tuesday of NaNo2020, too.

TK-421 Isn‘t it funny how characters seem to take on a life of their own? If trying to push them in certain directions isn‘t working, then definitely “listen” to your characters & go where they lead! I had another 1000+ word night & it feels great to be making progress again 3y

GingerAntics @TK-421 that‘s usually how I write. I have a general idea and the characters kind of do their own thing. I just write it down. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Every now and then I try pushing things and it doesn‘t work so well. 3y

Texreader Btw, I tried to mail you a book today but the post office said the zip code I have for you must be wrong because they couldn‘t find it in their system. What is your zip code? 3y

GingerAntics @Texreader I don‘t know. I think I‘ve gotten so used to characters taking over and telling their stories that I‘m totally open to it. I remember in third grade writing a story about a boy who kept getting punished. My teacher kept saying “why don‘t you have him do something positive next.” So I‘d start writing with that intent and he‘d end up punished again. 🤷🏼‍♀️ She didn‘t get it, but it was his life and apparently his life sucked. 3y

GingerAntics @Texreader as an educator myself now, I‘ve wondered why now that would be a HUGE red flag, but back in the early 90‘s the teacher thought it was just me being a jerk to my character. 🤣😂🤣 3y

GingerAntics @Texreader we had that problem trying to get a table sent from IKEA. Apparently, even though they want to build a store here, they can‘t figure out how to ship here. It‘s 56560-4439. Sometimes the extra four numbers help. I have no idea what they mean, but they seem to appease certain systems. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3y

CocoReads No writing again. Work was banana pants again and I only took a break long enough to scarf down some cheese and yogurt. Then I was brain dead when I got home. I‘m off today and tomorrow so hopefully I‘ll get some words in. 3y

CocoReads Once COVID calms down, we should be back to normal. Plus we‘ve been short staffed for 3 weeks now, which hasn‘t helped. I‘m hoping for better luck during Camps and next November. I‘m definitely not done writing, it‘s just very sporadic right now. 3y

GingerAntics @CocoReads that happened to me last year. In 2018 I spent most of my time at work writing, which helped me finish in 9 days. In 2019, we were so busy at work so I got no writing done there and by the time I got home I was so tired I didn‘t want to write them either. I totally get that. The story will happen in its own time. I‘m still working on a draft of my 2018 story that I‘m willing to share with people. It‘s still being tweaked. 3y

CocoReads Yes, my first nano project (I think 2016) actually needs heavy editing/complete rewrite now that I know more about my characters and their world so I may work with it during camp or split my time between that one and this years. 3y

jb72 It‘s been slow for me this past week, but I did get some notes down for a new story that wants to be written. I‘m hoping to link it to my short story too. 3y

GingerAntics @Texreader as of right now it‘s really short and very basic, but I didn‘t feel like writing my story today...maybe I‘m just done with it. The story itself isn‘t finished, but I‘m just not feeling it at all. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I‘m spending time putting all the pieces together for my NaNo18 project. I don‘t know why, but that just seems like such a better story, but a vacillate between liking it and thinking it‘s cliche. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3y

Huzzah! I won NaNoWriMo 2020. Only my 3rd win in 12 years! 🎉

It‘s been a crazy month. The last week especially has been challenging because I not only had to travel for work, which got me out my writing routine, but I hit a bit of a writing wall. But today I finally hit 50,000 words.

Sooo...the only way I actually made progress today was by writing a part that previously didn‘t exist abs was never even a thought, but is now so obviously necessary, I don‘t know how I didn‘t think of it sooner. I feel like I know how SEVERAL chapters work out, but I just can‘t figure out how to get there. Thus this magical new part. Please tell me someone else is having a better writing day?

TK-421 @GingerAntics Hopefully it‘ll start to come together for you as you write more! Wish I could say I had a good writing day yesterday but I didn‘t write a single word. My husband ruptured his Achilles tendon last night so I had to take him to emergency. They wouldn‘t let me go in so luckily I was able to hang out at my parents‘ place near the hospital until he was done 3 hours later instead of waiting in the car. 3y

jb72 Glad to hear it‘s coming together for you. No words for me yesterday but as I was driving home from taking my SO to work this morning a few ideas popped into my head. A way to connect my three short stories that I‘m slowly working on and maybe tying them together in a fourth book?!?! 3y

GingerAntics @jb72 I did a short story collection as my very first NaNo project back in 2018. Maybe don‘t focus too much on how many stories you have. Write as many short stories as it takes. That was my plan, but then mine basically just became chapters, so maybe that‘s really horrible advice. 🤣😂🤣 3y

Not a lot of writing today but lots of reading, which is okay. Writer‘s are readers and I firmly believe you can‘t have one without the other. I‘m really enjoying my reread of Good Omens and The Book of Celtic Wisdom was lovely, if shorter than I wanted. I was sad to be stuck indoors for National Take a Hike Day, though. Here‘s hoping for a little adventure this weekend. How was everyone else‘s Tuesday?

CocoReads No writing (again, sigh) but some reading. Another family friend down with the damn virus. Another friend, who despite being a science teacher, has normally been lax about gatherings and masking has cancelled her family thanksgiving and Christmas. We decided to cancel tgiving and are crossing fingers for Christmas. 3y

julesG As bad as the last week. I need to find a way to incorporate half an hour of writing every day, preferably at the same time each day. And I fear the added pressure of NaNoWriMo doesn't help. 3y

GingerAntics @RainyDayReading sometimes the brain needs a little time away from what you‘re writing. I try to tell my students that all the time. I really do need to learn to take my own advice. lol 3y

CocoReads Got a few words in before work. Then I walked into chaos. Came home, showered the cooties off, ate all the bad food, went to bed. Maybe today will be better. I only work a normal shift, I‘m leaving early to go to the dentist and should have my evening mostly free. 3y

TK-421 I wrote a total of 508 words yesterday, over two short sessions. I‘m having trouble concentrating for more than 20 minutes at a time. 3y

I made it past 50k! 😱 This is the first time I‘ve made it to 50k so early in the month. Too bad I‘m technically only halfway through my story otherwise I would really be celebrating. I‘m going to take a couple days off to rest a bit before getting back to it. Some progress today. I was distracted for a while by a clogged kitchen sink and running back and forth to the bathroom, bailing the water as it started heading for the counters (and succeeding a bit). I got zero exercise minutes for all that work too. I‘m outraged. The writing went well, though. Anyone else have harrowing tales from the day or some pretty words they wrote down? I‘m counting on the later as almost a guarantee. 🤣😂🤣

RainyDayReading I managed to get to 36k today (even though it‘s technically tomorrow 😅 seems like I write better at midnight) but about 1k of that was just me outlining the rest of the book. I‘ve got multiple perspectives going so it‘s been a bit of a pain keeping track as to where I‘m at in each of their storylines. No good lines written as of yet, this is mostly me just figuring out the events in the story rather than writing anything good haha 3y

TK-421 My day 10 went well, in spite of having a weird day. Had 40+ cm of snow over the weekend & we‘re snowed in. There‘s no way I was getting to work. Managed to salvage the day by working from home for the first time, thanks to my co-worker‘s patience & help. In the evening, wrote 1523 words & finally hit 10K! Spent almost 2 hours on an intense scene & I‘m happy with the messy draft of it so far. One of my characters got to say, “you bastard!” 3y

GingerAntics @julesG in 2018 I kept writing, the story wasn‘t done at 50K words. I ended up getting about 125K words and still wasn‘t done with the draft. I know this one won‘t be done at 50K words either. I‘ve got to learn to tell stories in less words. 🤣😂🤣 3y

I do have this cool NaNo workbook that is meant to help develop ideas. I‘m planning on using it for camp to see how I like it. The first book I ever read on how to write said it should be mostly dialogue, but that‘s not what I see in any of the books I read. It‘s a balance of description and dialogue. It‘s frustrating to try to figure out how to balance when different people says different things. I‘m trying to make mine something I‘d read, but I‘m not sure that‘s working, either. 🤣😂🤣 3y

GingerAntics @JillsBookshelf I actually don‘t. I only wrote for a few hours last night because I didn‘t want to watch football. I also don‘t have much of a life, so it‘s easy to turn free time into writing time. I‘m a regular hermit, really. 3y

GingerAntics @Lifeisasnap I always keep something at the bottom of my document, something weird and random and different from my actual project that I can go type away at when I feel stuck. I find the act of putting words into the document helps take my mind off of whatever has me stuck and either I come unstuck, or another part of the story comes to me so I can go in and write that. 3y

GingerAntics @Lifeisasnap This year, it‘s a (currently one paragraph) manifesto on the implrtance of character names. 🤣😂🤣 If it‘s at the bottom of your file, you can hop to it if you need it, the word count contributes to your 50K, and just knowing the escape hatch is there can help sometimes. 3y

Someone once told me they always worked on at least two, usually very different, things at once because it seemed working on one helped the other, by being a mental holiday. Last year during NaNo I was really struggling to make progress, so instead of having two documents to switch between, I used the ToC option to add something at the bottom. 3y

Even if I type out a grocery list or lyrics to a song. Just getting my fingers moving on the keyboard sometimes frees me to start writing. 3y

wanderinglynn @JillsBookshelf What works for me is to schedule writing time & block it out on my calendar, just like I schedule any other appointment or activity. During the week, I block out 7pm to 9pm for writing. My alarm goes off at 7pm & I stop whatever else I‘m doing and go to my desk. I allow myself to stop when I hit at least 1667 words. If I make it to all the way to 9pm and haven‘t made 1667 words, I stop & will do some yoga to help relax my brain. 3y

Are you allowed to read, or is the page turning too loud without any vacuums, sewing machines or other “loud” appliances running that day? Is your sewing machine really that loud? I‘ve always found them to be rather quiet and calming. 3y

julesG No, the sewing machine is not too loud. And I am relatively certain that no neighbours would be annoyed. I am allowed to run the washing machine. And I'm fairly certain I could hoover up broken glass. But we have a zealously cleanly neighbour who spends about an hour every day (every day!) vacuuming her 1 bedroom flat with one of those cyclone jet hoovers. 🙄🤬 It sounds like a fighter jet on idle. So, the new rule was added to the contracts. 3y

julesG I have to say, I'm glad she can't hoover on Sunday mornings anymore. It was very annoying. 3y

So, day 6 was not the best day, in fact it‘s been the worst day so far. I‘ve been grappling with the direction my story took early on and thinking it needs to change...which means getting rid of a character. Maybe the character I get rid of can become a character in something else later...it‘s just deciding which one goes to make the change work. I hope everyone else is less stressed all of a sudden. How are you guys doing?

This one character is just making everything awkward, so I think Ciaran is coming out of this story and going into another one. Maybe one for camp in July. I‘ve tried just making it work for now and editing him out later, but it‘s just not working. It‘s not him, it‘s me. I‘m keeping everything I wrote, I‘m just moving forward without this character. 3y

There is some good stuff in there. That‘s why I think writing out new stuff, then later in editing I can meld it all together. 3y

CocoReads @GingerAntics yes, I‘m totally just doing verbal vomiting right now. I get in a flow with dialogue though and forget body language and description so plan on adding that in during editing. Right now I‘m having trouble making the preteen daughter sound like a brat without actually being a brat. She‘s going thru some stuff but I have quite figured it all out yet. 3y

GingerAntics @CocoReads that can be hard, especially since you know the “stuff.” Since you know the stuff, it might not sound bratty to you, but would to someone who doesn‘t know the situation. Maybe try thinking of it from the perspective of “what would a nosey old lady whose a bit of a jerk and feels the need to tell you what she would have done if her daughter ever said/did” that thing, but she just doesn‘t know the stuff so she‘s being a total jerk. 3y

Call anyone and anything to do with the awful thing "unfair", stick her fingers in her ears and/or turn the music up way too loud, throw things at the walls. I‘ve also got a book called The Writers Guide to Character traits that may be helpful. Maybe not for the daughter but I‘ve also got a narcissistic ex husband to write so I may dive into some research later 3y

GingerAntics @jb72 that‘s frustrating. That‘s actually a little bit of what‘s happening to mine. This added character, though he‘s a sweetheart, is making the MC more naive and fumbling than I want her to be. These characters just take on lives of their own, and we‘re just along for the ride. I hope your asshat chills a bit, or maybe your other character is just biding time and will surprise you. 3y

CocoReads Yes, and we just watched episode 2 of Seduced, which is about the NXVM cult and there‘s another one. Not as charming as Bundy and almost as repugnant as the Cheeto but I think there‘s material that can be worked with (as well as ideas for other stories when I‘m ready to leave my current fictional world). 3y

What makes someone abandon logic and all evidence no matter how obvious to join a cult or follow a crazy leader? I was interested before, but I‘ve been more interested of late. I think I first became interested because I was so impressionable (10 years old) when Heaven‘s Gate did their mass suicide. That‘s the first time I‘d ever heard the word cult. 3y

CocoReads Ah Heavems Gate. Thatwas a bunch of crazy right there. The stuff they shouted off was so unbelievable that I never understood what made people join that one. NXVM is a tad more believable but still....I‘ve been fascinated since I was a kid. Jonestown , Manson, Children of God, etc. and the strange pull of he who shall not be named.... again I don‘t get it but the psychology fascinates me 3y

GingerAntics Naming characters can be the hardest part sometimes. A character needs just the right name, and that name may have meanings or repercussions that ripple through the whole story. It certainly puts the pressure on. Other people don‘t get why I agonise over character names the way I do. Names have meaning and that‘s important. It all goes back to the magic of words, the most important words are names. 3y

GingerAntics The strangest situation I‘ve been in, I had my character‘s nickname. I knew, without a doubt, that was this person‘s nickname. So i had to either find a name that fit the nickname and everything else, or I had to come up with a reason why that was this person‘s nickname. Luckily, I found a name that fit the nickname. 😂🤣😂 3y

julesG @GingerAntics I've so often frowned at names in published books. Names are part of the backstory of a character, you need to chose wisely. As you should naming your own children. 3y

GingerAntics Exactly!!! I once was in a waiting room with a woman and her toddler. The toddler‘s name was Chlamydia. She thought it was such a pretty name and didn‘t understand why people didn‘t like it. 🤦🏼‍♀️ 3y

julesG 414 words in 30min. In German. Needed to translate from English into my effing mother tongue because the idea I had came up in English. I'm working on a middle-grade/YA for my kids right now. A story I had started two years ago during NaNoWriMo. 3y

RainyDayReading Just barely pushed myself over 20k today. Just can‘t focus very well 😪 I outlined the next three scenes that are coming up though so hopefully tomorrow I can get those out. I feel like I won‘t be able to make 50k with my story but I also don‘t feel like I‘m moving fast enough in my story 🙈 3y

GingerAntics @julesG that sounds like me with camp. I signed up in April but never wrote anything. Then I straight up forgot to even sign up in July. This is the first time I‘ve sat down to write since we moved, so I suppose it‘s all just pouring out now. 3y

CocoReads I managed around 1600 yesterday. My 2 day total is 5011. Not all of it was story, some was brainstorming and I started a character list to keep track of names because I keep changing them from project to project. 3y

GingerAntics @CocoReads admittedly, the first 11 pages (maybe 500 words in all) are the character questionnaires I didn‘t have time to do before Sunday. I started doing them as separate files, but then realised I was writing and it was November, so I figured it should count, so I included it. Writing is writing after all. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3y

I made it through #Nanowrimo, coming up witha win & I even got a bingo for #NanoBingo19, finally! I didn‘t reach my personal goal of finishing this draft of my novel, but I‘m much, much closer so WOOHOO! I think I‘m taking a day or two off and then it‘s back to it with the goal of finishing this draft by December 31st 😁
