#OnThisDay in 1908 Gaston Leroux' The Phantom of the Opera began serialization in Le Gaulois. Leroux's inspiration for the tale came from a real fire which caused a chandelier to crash, and rumors of ghosts haunting Paris' famed Palais Garnier. The story was not immediately successful, but slowly grew a sort of cult fan base. (Cont'd in comments) #HistoryGetsLIT

TheKidUpstairs To date, it has been adapted into just about every medium available (please do yourself a favor and check out the poster for Robert Englund's Phantom) including the longest running show on Broadway. 1w

Surely it will not be buried in a pauper‘s grave! I maintain that the skeleton of the Opera ghost belongs in the archives of the National Academy of Music; it is no ordinary skeleton.

Absolutely stunning! A work of ever shifting themes and focus, wherein, I can say, there are many many villains, yet only one hero who will defy expectations. Part romance, part humor, part mystery and thriller and horror and philosophical musing—THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is divine and a wonderful start to my book reading this year!

🎧 I saw Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s The Phantom of the Opera 3X at the Civic Opera House in Chicago. All the stars!

Yesterday I listened to the book. The narrator was mediocre. No singing or music. The 4th wall is broken & the narrator speaks to us as though he‘s recalling facts. 20% in the pace picks up & suddenly the story fell into my limited knowledge base.

It was what I expected yet with more detail.

I‘m on a 3-star kick lately.

⭐️⭐️⭐️3/4 👇🏻

Twainy I can‘t believe I‘m going to say this & maybe it‘s because they‘re just different mediums .... the book was not better than ALW‘s masterwork. Still worth a read or listen. I enjoyed both. As for movies ... Gerard Butler was nice to look at of course but I love me some B movies!! Hammer House W00T & Lon Chaney IS The hideous Phantom in my book! He applied his own makeup for that role! 🖤 😁 😈 (edited) 1y

" The Phantom of the Opera " As a recommendation from my girlfriend @HellGL ,I've started to read this book (in Romanian) with pretty much enthusiasm and I finished describing it as one of the best books I've ever read. What I really, really loved was how the villain was placed in this story. It was something different for me and I can easily call it masterpiece?.

HellGL Omg babe. An amazing book for sure 🖤 2y

Mehso-so

Funny in parts, scientific in others and a bit confused overall, this book was a mixed bag, but in a good way. I wouldn't put it in the list of must-read classics, but it was entertaining to learn so much about the Paris Opera House. If there's one thing I do find commendable, it's Leroux's ability to set the scene. And I felt really sorry for Erik - why do classic writers always give their most inspired characters the shorter end of the stick?

Butterfinger That's awful. 2y
Enchanted_Bibliophile @Butterfinger It's actually a bit weird. It say Chapter 5 and then nothing and the it say Chapter 6 and then nothing and so on. Then only at chapter 9 does the reading continue. I've never experienced something like this before 2y

I vowed to read more classics, Phantom is my favourite musical - OMG I just can't continue I'm half way through and I have to put this down. I must say though after reading even this much you truly appreciate just how much of a genius Andrew Lloyd Webber, his lyricist and the script writer are even more. #booknotbetter

Yesterday evening I finished Phantom of the Opera. I really liked the plot in general even though the back and forth of Christine‘s character was a bit annoying. Since I never wayched the movie till the end I was a bit surprised by the ending. The description of the opera building qnd machinerie behind it were very interesting as well. 😊

jb72 There‘s a 2004 movie with Gerard Butler. It‘s pretty good. And I would recommend any of the actual operas. I got to see it in person in about 2009. It was amazing. 2y
rubyslippersreads If you have Hoopla, I‘d recommend the 25th Anniversary of the musical. It looks like the Gerard Butler movie is available to rent/buy on most of the streaming platforms. And if you haven‘t heard the original London cast recording with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman, I highly recommend it. And for books, 2y
ElizaMarie @rubyslippersreads ooo I just found the Hoopla Phantom of the Opera At the Royal Albert Hall 25th Anniversary. Not sure if that's the one you mentioned but I am going to be watching that one as soon as it downloads! Thank you so much!

@jb72 I am gonna see if I can rent the Gerard Butler one so my husband and I can do a “virtual date“ with that one.

I'm up to 4 bingos.

Can we do this again?

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! I actually am planning to do this again for August - it may become a regular part of the BookSpin challenge, and people can choose if they want to participate in Bingo each month or just regular BookSpin. 2y
vlwelser @TheAromaofBooks Good. It's done wonders for my tbr. 2y
TheAromaofBooks I didn't strategize mine very well this month and it was entirely books that have nothing to do with anything else I'm trying to read, so I don't think I'm going to get a bingo because I'm bogged down a bit with other stuff. Next month I'm going to try to have some of my “assigned“ reads mixed in for a better chance of success!! 2y
vlwelser @TheAromaofBooks That's what I did with my 5 "free" squares. I plan on doing it again. Those + book spin + double spin and then basically start filling the holes. How's that for strategy? It didn't look pretty at the beginning. 2y

Saw the movie Phantom of the Opera yesterday and realized it‘s based on a novel - never knew that. Bought it right away. 🙈

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ So different from the movie it‘s hard to tell this is the source material! I did enjoy this read, though!

I really did not like this. I put aside my knowledge of the musical/movies and tried to give it a chance. I found all the characters annoying and dim witted. I can see why Andrew Lloyd Webber and other screenwriters made this story completely different. The movies make it a beautiful love story whereas this made Erik (the Phantom) crazy and insane. Let me know if you agreed with my opinion. I really tried :(

rubyslippersreads I read this after seeing the musical, which I adore (I was lucky enough to see Michael Crawford as the Phantom twice 😍). The book‘s descriptions of Erik certainly don‘t make him matinee idol material. 😬 Have you read 2y
Manoshgirl51 @rubyslippersreads I did read the book, I am a big fan of the musical as well. BTW love your username :) 2y
