day 28- I could have used many books, where characters wear a “mask” to hide their true selves from others. But, I decided to go with a literal mask. Read this book when I was a teen & finally saw the musical a few years ago. Also, to the Littens who do the photo challenges every month, you all are amazing! It‘s been hard to come up with something just for one month. @Clwojick #scarathlon #chillingphotochallenge #mask

One of my favorite films of all time!

1925 (Silent) starring "The Man of a Thousand Faces" Lon Chaney Sr.

Fun fact, Lon Chaney Sr. did all of his makeup and special effects costuming for all of his films. In fact, he is known to be the very first special effects wizard ever to grace Hollywood. His makeup design in "The Man Who Laughs" inspired Bob Kane's character The Joker in the Batman comic series.

Today‘s author spotlight: Gaston Leroux! He was born in Paris in 1868 and died in 1927 in Nice at 58. As a reporter, he covered the 1905 Russian Revolution. In 1919, he started a company writing books to turn into films. His contributions to detective fiction make him France‘s equivalent to Doyle in Britain and Poe in the US. “Phantom” is based on his investigation of the Paris Opera‘s basement as a former prison. #AuthorPotpourri #TheMoreYouKnow

I really enjoyed The Phantom of the Opera. I've seen a few of the movies that have been made from it over the years & the book is really better. I love how its narrated by the author & presented as a real event that had occurred 👻

OnlyYoo I think that the musical does a better job showing the different dynamics between Erik and Christine and Christine and raoul. But the book does a better job showing what a genius Erik is and how tortured he is by society‘s rejection of him 5mo

Got some tickets to the symphony from work; it was an evening of Sondheim and Webber. Cats and Phantom of the Opera have special places in my heart and I was super excited when the organist came out during intermission to get ready to perform The Phantom of the Opera. My zoom hasn't working but you can still see him sitting up there!

Phantom of the Opera! Maybe you have heard of this famous Broadway show or maybe you have seen the movies made about it. But did you know it was a book? I found this for ONLY $2.00 in this amazing book store in Salem Massachusetts! While this is my favorite musical, the book really satisfies my need to learn more about the french opera ghost. I wouldn‘t recommend this book for young readers however- the content is high school level.

kennedimartin This F novel would be great for a LC. Using UDL 5.1 the reader can research more about the story behind the alluring phantom of the opera. I found this great resource https://www.mirvish.com/uploads/shows/Phantom/PHANTOM%20Study%20Guide.pdf where the creator of the stage play created a PDF with pages of background info on the opera ghost! Using ESOL 1, 3 and 5, an advanced level EL could enjoy this book as well. #lae3414sp19 (edited) 7mo

There are several ballerina dancers present in this play within a book!

My staircase isn‘t as grand as the Opera‘s, but it serves the same function, so I‘d consider them equals! 😉

Happy Valentine‘s Day, Littens! I hope it‘s great. It bugs me that this quote is actually from the play not the novel. Nevertheless, I love it. The greatest gift I could receive today would be to get out of this reading slump that has stemmed from having the flu this week. Now, with no really excuse, I just feel like I‘m too lazy to read. 😂

It is finished!!! This weekend, I had the pleasure of seeing a stage performance of The Phantom of the Opera at an actual opera house. The best word I have to describe the experience is UNFORGETTABLE. The Angel of Music is singing songs in my head! These past weeks I have been driven to finish the original story, and I am so sad this is only my first read because it deserves another!! Poor, unhappy Erik. #OG

Mehso-so

Overall, a meh. AL Webber‘s musical really distills the best parts of the plot - and honestly, the movie of the musical does even more to bring in bits from the book. The characters in the book are too much - there are too many and Raoul, for example, is too petulant and childish, while Christine is too angelic. Still, glad to have read it.

Doing better than expected for #24B4Monday, too, thanks to kid lessons and hiding from family.

I‘ve had it for...at least 15 years; I think it‘s time to read it. So far, into the second chapter, and it‘s pretty good. On the down side, it‘s hard to read it with the soundtrack to the ALWebber version running through my head. Very distracting.
