So many emotions reading this short story! The Yellow Wall-Paper has been on my TBR for a very long time, and I‘d always heard great things about it. It is a harrowing tale, describing a woman‘s descent into madness. The story‘s major theme of mental health and the way it is not taken seriously - sometimes by those closest to us, sometimes by those in the medical field - is still relevant in today‘s society. Powerful, creepy, and a must read.

Trashcanman The whole thing I think is sick. 3y
Jessieleah @Trashcanman it is, and I commend her for writing it. Only 30 pages long (in my copy!) and the emotions I felt reading it were intense. Anger at her husband, helplessness for her, empathy for her postpartum struggles. It wasn‘t what I expected and I rather liked the surprise of that 3y

“You see, this magic that had fallen on me was black magic -and I had wished white.
It didn‘t work at all, and, what was worse, it stopped all the other things that were working so nicely. Oh, if I had only thought to wish permanence for those lovely punishments! If only I had done more while I could do it, had half appreciated my privileges when I was a witch!”

Great collection of stories ranging from hilarious to eerie. #Connecticut

While I appreciate the value of Charlotte Perkins-Gilman‘s stories, I found them really hard to get into. Very well written and structured, but the style and lack of any feel for the characters, as well as how “flowery” they could be at times just wasn‘t for me. However, I can see how a lover of classics could enjoy these immensely...so it‘s definitely not a “pan”. Sorry, @shendrix413 ! #FreakyFriday

shendrix413 Darn! 6y
AllenTStClair @shendrix413 I‘m here and there with my tastes. It‘s my fault. 🤣 6y

On to the next book. This one is a #FreakyFriday selection from @shendrix413 and I have high hopes for this one!

Leftcoastzen A classic! 6y
shendrix413 I absolutely love The Yellow Wallpaper!! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ I actually wrote a HUGE paper on it in my women's lit class in undergrad. I turned it into a movie directed by M. Night Shyamalan. I hope you love it too! 6y

@Samplergal mentioned Serial Reader which sparked me to finally download it. I haven‘t touched my Litsy classics challenge at all this year so maybe this will get me going?

Hopefully it won‘t be a new source of stress but I really like the app design so far!

#serialreader #classics

Samplergal Yay! I have enjoyed many, not all of the books and stories read on Serial Reader. I hope this moves you from a reading challenge slump. Good luck. 6y
SkeletonKey @Samplergal - Thanks!! 6y
alisiakae I have only dipped a toe in to the Litsy Classics Challenge, I have to admit it took a backseat to Other challenges the first part of this year. 6y
SkeletonKey @4thhouseontheleft - That‘s kind of what happened with me as well. I think the app is helping now though! 6y

I was going to read a longer book, but due to time constraints, I decided to re-read The Yellow Wallpaper as my feminist classic for #booked2018. It‘s been thirty years since I read it. I‘m enjoying it. I didn‘t remember the title story being quite so horrifying. 😨 I love the writing, and I‘m having a good time imagining how shocking the feminist ideas in the stories were at this time of publication.

One of my favorite stories of all time, this is the perfect reread for #booktober. Not only is it dark and suspenseful, but it touches on important issues like mental health and subjugation in marriage. We may think that we're past all of these issues, but women are still suppressed all over the world and mental health is not talked about enough. #womenwriters #feminism #rereads #scaretober #allhallowsread

ElizaTodd I can't wait to read this! It's on Serial Reader ❤️ 8y

I know now that reading this short story was a step in becoming the feminist I am. I read this again this morning. It looks so different at 39 than it did at 18. Still powerful, but all the more heartbreaking. I am so grateful for the strong women that came before me.

Teaching this tonight. Students always get into it, which is good; but sometimes, it feels as though we are fetishizing mental illness. The risk is far outweighed by its strengths. Gilman tells her truth through fiction, and skeptics of lit falter on this one :).
