Love and Freindship
Love and Freindship: And Other Youthful Writings | Jane Austen
Jane Austen's brilliant, hilarious - and often outrageous - early stories, sketches and pieces of nonsense, in a beautiful Penguin Classics clothbound edition. Jane Austen's earliest writing dates from when she was just eleven years, and already shows the hallmarks of her mature work: wit, acute insight into human folly, and a preoccupation with manners, morals and money. But they are also a product of the eighteenth century she grew up in - dark, grotesque, often surprisingly bawdy, and a far cry from the polished, sparkling novels of manners for which she became famous. Drunken heroines, babies who bite off their mother's fingers, and a letter-writer who has murdered her whole family all feature in these very funny pieces. This edition includes all of Austen's juvenilia, including her 'History of England' - written by 'a partial, prejudiced, and ignorant Historian' - and the novella 'Lady Susan', in which the anti-heroine schemes and cheats her way through high society. Taken together, they offer a fascinating - and often surprising - insight into the early Austen. This major new edition is the first time Austen's juvenilia has appeared in Penguin Classics. Edited by Christine Alexander, it includes an introduction, notes and other useful editorial materials. Jane Austen was born on 16 December 1775 at Steventon, near Basingstoke, the seventh child of the rector of the parish. In her youth she wrote many burlesques, parodies and other stories, including a short epistolary novel, Lady Susan. On her father's retirement in 1801, the family moved to Bath, and subsequently to Chawton in Hampshire. The novels published in Austen's lifetime include Sense and Sensibility(1811),Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1816). Persuasion was written in a race against failing health in 1815-16, and was published, together with Northanger Abbey, posthumously in 1818. Austen died in Winchester on 18 July 1817. Christine Alexander is Scientia Professor of English at the University of New South Wales and general editor of the Juvenilia Press. She has published extensively on the Bronts and has co-edited the first book on literary juvenilia, The Child Writer from Austen to Woolf (2005). 'Spirited, easy, full of fun verging with freedom upon sheer nonsense...At fifteen she had few illusions about other people and none about herself' - Virginia Woolf' [Her] inspiration was the inspiration of Gargantua and of Pickwick; it was the gigantic inspiration of laughter' - G. K. Chesterton

It was like reading a blog or a journal. I enjoyed the dramatics of it all.

Spent the last hour chortling on the couch — much to my pups‘ continued annoyance — as I read this one.
A quick lil‘ epistolary novella written by Jane Austen when she was just 14, her wit and humor are on ready display here as she pokes fun at some of the absurd, overly-romantic tropes popular in stories at the time.

Favorite part was this sage deathbed advice:

Beware of swoons…
Run mad as often as you choose; but do not faint.

Day 8: #Friendship (or “freindship”, according to Jane‘s spelling 😉)

Love and Freindship is an epistolary novel written by Austen in her teens for the amusement of her family.

CrowCAH Have you seen the 2016 movie Love and Friendship? It‘s pretty close to the text. 2y
LeahBergen @CrowCAH I have seen that movie (loved it!) but it is based on Lady Susan (another of her epistolary novels) and they decided to call it by the name of this novel. Bizarre, don‘t you think? 2y
CrowCAH @LeahBergen yes, very confusing. 2y

Jane Austen must have been such a fun kid! Joyful, witty, observant (of both people and literary fashions), and wise.

Fascinating and entertaining! It was so interesting to see Austen's writing develop. I think a lot of these early writings were so funny. Some definitely read like stories a kid or young teenager would make up and I found myself laughing out loud. I also really enjoyed Lady Susan. I thought she was a fun character until about the halfway point but overall, I still enjoyed this early Austen novel. I especially recommend this to Austen fans.

Look, I have such wonderful friends. A package from a dear friend here in Germany and a package from my dear Litsy friend @Simona.

Simona, I had a sneak peek inside and had tears in my eyes just because you chose to wrap everything in my favourite colour.
Will open it all on Saturday, when I get a chance before or after my trip to Hamburg.
Thank you dear friend. You've made me feel so cherished.

Cinfhen 💕💕 @Simona 6y
Simona Didn‘t you see the note on the package - opening day: not before 31/3!?! The next year I have to add - without sneak peek 😘 6y
julesG @Simona There was no note on the package. Scouts honour. My son actually opened it. And I just had a teeny tiny glimpse. Promise. 😘😘😘 6y

Thank you so much to my #summersantagoespostal for gifting me this book off my TBR list. As is the standard for Austen, this was fun and witty. Laura is a middle aged widow recounting her brief marriage and its aftermath in a series of letters to her friend's daughter.

Fun Friday Photo! My fluffy cat with a collection of Jane Austen's minor works, including the basis of the film Love and Friendship. I loved the film, so I think it's time for a re-read of this volume.
