Blowout: Corrupted Democracy, Rogue State Russia, and the Richest, Most Destructive Industry on Earth | Rachel Maddow
Big Oil and Gas Versus DemocracyWinner Take All Rachel Maddows Blowout offers a dark, serpentine, riveting tour of the unimaginably lucrative and corrupt oil-and-gas industry. With her trademark black humor, Maddow takes us on a switchback journey around the globefrom Oklahoma City to Siberia to Equatorial Guineaexposing the greed and incompetence of Big Oil and Gas. She shows how Russias rich reserves of crude have, paradoxically, stunted its growth, forcing Putin to maintain his power by spreading Russia's rot into its rivals, its neighbors, the United States, and the Wests most important alliances. Chevron, BP, and a host of other industry players get their star turn, but ExxonMobil and the deceptively well-behaved Rex Tillerson emerge as two of the past century's most consequential corporate villains. The oil-and-gas industry has weakened democracies in developed and developing countries, fouled oceans and rivers, and propped up authoritarian thieves and killers. But being outraged at it is, according to Maddow, like being indignant when a lion takes down and eats a gazelle. You can't really blame the lion. It's in her nature. This book is a clarion call to contain the lion: to stop subsidizing the wealthiest industry on earth, to fight for transparency, and to check the influence of predatory oil executives and their enablers. The stakes have never been higher. As Maddow writes, Democracy either wins this one or disappears.

I‘ve started 3 different audiobooks over the past two days and none were really grabbing me. Found this expose of the gas and oil industry by Rachel Maddow and with her dedication alone, I‘m hooked.

AmyG It‘s so well-written and sort of blew my mind. She‘s great. 1y

Told with Maddow‘s trademark wit, this book is a remarkable exploration of the oil and gas industry — particularly the way it has contributed to the erosion of American democracy and the election of a particular orange man. Also included is a lengthy insight into Putin, which rings eerily prescient as we follow his unjust war in Ukraine and Europe‘s attempts to cut off his dominance over their energy grid.

It took me ages to finish this #audiobook but that shouldn‘t deter you...there is more than enough information (and detail to back it up) making it a bit of a challenge to digest it all but the overall point is well laid out and certainly one we should all be more informed on.
It may have been easier to take in had I read vs. listened, but Rachel Maddow narrated so with the audio you get the bonus of her tone and sarcasm which was fun.😊 🎧

KathyWheeler I bought this book for my husband because I liked her earlier book about the military. Neither of us has read this book yet though. Looking forward to it. 3y
Bookish.SAM @KathyWheeler be prepared... it‘s dense but definitely worth the read in my opinion. Eye-opening! I‘ve tried to talk about it with ppl but it‘s hard to do it justice and also hard to believe that this info is out there and there aren‘t more ppl up in arms about it. 3y

4⭐ Took me awhile to read it, as it was dense at times and a lot of information to comprehend. It certainly put things in a new light and quite honestly I wasn't that surprised at the level of corruption in present day Russia. The book is very reminiscent of Rachel's style on her show on MSNBC. #2020 #nonfiction #bookspin #bookreview #bookstagram #gasandoil #politics

AmyG This book was sort of mind blowing. 4y
melissajayne @AmyG it was; I knew the stuff in the last chapter, but I didn't realize how deep the corruption went. I remember Deepwater Horizon and the earthquakes in Oklahoma and the invasion of Ukraine in 2014, but how it was all connected was really fascinating. 4y

I have never watched Maddow‘s show or listened to her podcast. I know I‘m in her choir, but I am in absolute awe of how she presented so much evidence on such wide ranging, but connected, topics and made the information so engaging. I read 367 pages and learned something on Every Single Page. She showcases her Rhodes scholar writing exquisitely and I‘m both infuriated, informed, and even more petrified for November. Excellent book.

melissajayne The book is very much like her show: seemingly inaccous events that don't seem to relate to each other are somehow related to each other in some absurd way and made sense. 4y

This is no light read and it‘s scary but it needs to be read. It‘s Rachel Maddow, so I assume she‘s preaching to the choir. All I know is that I‘m getting our passports in order and keeping some cold, hard cash stashed away. Just in case. It‘s surreal to read this while the impeachment trial is unfolding. Maddow offers some glimmers of hope but will it be enough?
