I had heard a mix of reviews about this story. Actually enjoyed it more than anticipated. Not gruesome horror but thought provoking.

Finally finished reading my #BookSpin read for October! 👊

This book was okay. A lot of the connections in the plot were incredibly tenuous and I felt more confused than scared while reading it. Still a little confused after finishing it. I‘m a big fan of Paradise Lost so I liked how that was tied into the story, but there just wasn‘t enough in the plot or characters to really capture me.
4/10

Boring, not scary, confusing plot. Skip it.

The Demonologist has an intriguing premise – David Ullman, a professor of demonic literature specializing in Milton‘s Paradise Lost, is sent on a whirlwind adventure to save his own daughter from demons. However, the novel is riddled with highly improbable and unbelievable plot points, as well as emotionally flat characters and a rushed ending, leaving me unimpressed. This is my third Andrew Pyper novel, and it may be my last. #LitsyAtoZ #LetterD

We talk a lot about our Best Of Lists. I‘d love to hear which books fell short for you this year.

See All 24 Comments
rather_be_reading hmmmm...ill come back to this 5y
RaimeyGallant Good question. This book has much literary merit but is so flawed in protagonist worldview, which said world now knows is shared by the author. 5y
CarolynM It's an unpopular opinion, but as @Cinfhen knows the book I enjoyed least this year was 5y
Lola Great question! I had a few disappointments this year. One that really didn‘t work for me was 5y
Endowarrior21 American Gods just could not get into it I am going to try the Audiobook in 2019. 5y
Cinfhen Oh, I LOVE this idea!!!! I‘m such a hater....I‘d love to see @shawnmooney list😂😂😘😘😘 and yes I did not love but did not hate the King like @CarolynM but I agree 💯with @Lola about the KH!!! I need to look over my reads... 5y
Lola @Cinfhen My reading soul sister 😘 5y
Cinfhen Ha!!! @Lola 👯‍♀️ 5y
CoverToCoverGirl American Gods and Circe.. DNF either of them. 5y
Beachesnbooks I ended up hating House of Leaves, which was a huge disappointment 😕 5y
ShookBelf For me, it would be Slaughterhouse-Five (Finished it but 'meh' ... so it goes) and Lolita (my first bail of 2018). 5y
shadowspeak17 My lowest rated of the year are Just in Case, Binti: The Night Masquerade, and Seveneves. Seveneves had to be the most disappointing. I expected more from it and jeez that book is thiiiick. At least the other two were short. 🙃 5y
merelybookish So far no major hate read in 2018 but I did bail on 5y
ephemeralwaltz Love this post. @RaimeyGallant I bailed so hard on that one! One of my worst this year was this second-in-a-series thriller, what a waste of time, UGH. 5y
JPeterson Ah, I was so disappointed by Frankenstein in Baghdad. I ended up giving it a higher rating then it deserved, because I wanted to like it more then I did. @merelybookish 5y
merelybookish @JPeterson I wanted to like it but it just didn't work for me at all. 5y
RaimeyGallant @ephemeralwaltz It's such a difficult one to critique. She knows how to hide hate in beautiful prose. Fun trick. 5y

#TBRtemptation post 5! Prof. David Ullman is a leading expert on demon literature, particular "Paradise Lost". A woman appears at his office with an invitation to Venice to witness a "phenomenon". He eventually heads to Venice with his 12-year-old daughter, Tess. At the address given, he finds a man speaking in the voice & words of his dead father. Thus begins a PL-laden quest where failure means losing Tess. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

BookishTrish I JUST finished it for my #moosemoose book club. It was a pan for me. Some passages were very well written but the plotting wasn‘t well done. 6y
Reggie No but I have read this one and it‘s about Ed and Lorraine Warren, the real life couple from The Conjuring. And it is like their memoir which really freaks me out because that stuff is real. @kamoorephoto @BookishTrish @danibolahood @ephemeralwaltz @GatheringBooks @scripturient 6y

I'm calling this a YMMV. I did not like it. I liked it less and less as the book went on and it would have been a DNF were it not for the fact that I owed a careful reading to my #MooseMoose teammates. It's a best seller, so my guess is people liked it, so the book must not be for me.

Starting The Demonologist for #MooseMoose #lmpbc and look! They spelled my name right! I first. I swear.

CarolynM Don't you hate having a "difficult" name? Everyone wants to spell (and pronounce) mine as Caroline? 6y
tournevis @CarolynM Well, Isabelle is one of the most common names of my generation and spelled in the most common way, and yet almost every one I meet in Ontario spells it wrong. To make matters worse, my official name is long and hyphenated. Yet the secretaries at uni still spell it wrong after nearly 17 years. So, yeah, 😤😡😠 6y

“Fuck you. You think this is a scene in some indie drama you take my wife to in the Village, some pack of lies the guy at the Times said was so naturalistically performed. But in real life? We‘re bad actors. We‘re slobs who actually hurt. You don‘t feel it, you couldn‘t, but the pain you‘re causing us—causing my family—it‘s destroying our lives, what we have together. This book came to my attention when I finished "Night Film." Although not as sprawling as "Night Film," this is an immediately engaging, quick & well-paced work. A scholar who specializes in Milton is offered a mysterious invitation to Venice. He is soon forced to use his knowledge of "Paradise Lost" to confront potentially supernatural threats. Classic literature being used to solve demonic threats is not a new idea, but Pyper handles it well.

Leniverse That reminds me, have you read Matthew Pearl's books? The first one is called The Dante Club, (but they're all standalone). No demons, but while the poet Longfellow and friends are working on the first American translation of Dante, strange deaths take place that mirror the circles of hell. 7y
vivastory @Leniverse I'm not familiar with them. They sound interesting. There's also the series that begins with "Murder as a Fine Art." Features Thomas de Quincey solving a murder. I haven't read it either, but I've heard positive reviews 7y
Leniverse I'll need to look that up! The other Matthew Pearl books I have read are "The Poe Shadow", about the mysterious circumstances surrounding Poe's death, and "The Last Dickens", focusing on Dickens' American Tour and his last, unfinished novel. I enjoyed all three books. I think there's at least one more. I should buy that soon. Lol 7y
vivastory @Leniverse Have you read "Drood" by Dan Simmons? It's also about Dickens' final novel 7y
Leniverse I've heard of it, but not read it. You? 7y
vivastory @Leniverse On my TBR (life story) 😀 7y
