The Grace Year
The Grace Year | Kim Liggett
A speculative thriller in the vein of The Handmaid’s Tale and The Power. Optioned by Universal and Elizabeth Banks to be a major motion picture! “A visceral, darkly haunting fever dream of a novel and an absolute page-turner. Liggett’s deeply suspenseful book brilliantly explores the high cost of a misogynistic world that denies women power and does it with a heart-in-your-throat, action-driven story that’s equal parts horror-laden fairy tale, survival story, romance, and resistance manifesto. I couldn’t stop reading.” – Libba Bray, New York Times bestselling author No one speaks of the grace year. It’s forbidden. Girls are told they have the power to lure grown men from their beds, drive women mad with jealousy. They believe their very skin emits a powerful aphrodisiac, the potent essence of youth, of a girl on the edge of womanhood. That’s why they’re banished for their sixteenth year, to release their magic into the wild so they can return purified and ready for marriage. But not all of them will make it home alive. Sixteen-year-old Tierney James dreams of a better life—a society that doesn’t pit friend against friend or woman against woman, but as her own grace year draws near, she quickly realizes that it’s not just the brutal elements they must fear. It’s not even the poachers in the woods, men who are waiting for their chance to grab one of the girls in order to make their fortune on the black market. Their greatest threat may very well be each other. With sharp prose and gritty realism, The Grace Year examines the complex and sometimes twisted relationships between girls, the women they eventually become, and the difficult decisions they make in-between.

I don‘t want to give too much away, so all I‘ll say about the plot is that it is filled with non-stop action and intrigue, which makes it a fast read. You‘ll be flipping through it trying to find out what happens next. You definitely won‘t be bored.

Sixteen-year-old girls are sent away for their grace year to an encampment where they can “get rid of their magic” and thus return and be safe for the men to whom they are subservient. Independent Tierney chafes against this society and has a more practical approach. This book is brutal but good with shades of Lord of the Flies and the mass hysteria of the Salem Witch Trials. I highly recommend.

Just finished reading The Grace Year for the #24in48 Hour #Readathon! And let me just say...Wow!

This book is so powerful! It got me ALL in the feels! I raged! I laughed! I cried! I'm shook!

Tierney, I mean...I just...*babbles incoherently*

Still trying to process everything I've read, everything I feel...

Well, bookish butterflies, which books are completely hijacking your emotions and making you question life? Hmm?

Completely engrossing, this tale taps into the emotional rollercoaster of female adolescence, but framed within a society where women are subservient wives or of no use to society. And what happens when one girl chooses to question all she thinks she knows and open her eyes to the real value she has in the world. Brave, bold and viscerally told. A wonderful story of survival of body and spirit, when all the world seems pitted against you.

Pretty good for what it is - Hunger Games meets Handmaid's Tale meets Lord of the Flies. The influences were just a little too obvious and I would have liked more scene building, I never really got a good sense of the setting or the size of their society. But it was engrossing, I tore right through it.

Received this gorgeous ARC from Wednesday Books and Macmillan. What a fascinating story about the power of women, told as a dystopian fairy tale. From the blurb: “We‘re told we have the power to lure grown men from their beds. They believe our skin emits a powerful aphrodisiac...That‘s why we‘re banished for our sixteenth year: to release our magic into the wild before we‘re allowed to return to civilization.” #ARC

😲This YA dystopian novel is what my dreams are all about! Dark, mysterious, & keeps the reader questioning what‘s real. Pub date 9/17- go preorder this!

16yo girls are sent 2a remote camp every year 4their “grace year.” The men in society believe women 2have magical powers & must spend this year of exclusion in order 2rid themselves of the magic. But what really happens during this year? No one knows; discussing grace year is strictly forbidden

TheBookKeepers PS: I really hate this cover! Don‘t let it deter you from reading this! Haha the content within is so much better! 2mo

I could not put this down! It was fast pace, gruesome, horrifying, yet beautiful. Women are not treated as equals to men. At age 16, girls must go to an island for a year to rid their magic, so they can return pure to he married or to work. Yet, something happens on the island. There are poachers killing them and the girls turn on one another. Can they survive this world?

allthingskayla @felinesandfiction enjoy! I just found out Elizabeth Banks required the rights to make it into a film. :) Also, I really need someone‘s opinion on what exactly happens at the very end because it left me a smidge confused. 2mo

Wow. I honestly need a day to digest what I had read. This felt so timely and so spot on for me. Comparisons to The Handmaiden‘s Tale do The Grace Year an injustice; this is its own story and it‘s just as amazing.

Unf. What a beautiful, gutting, suckerpunch of a book! Brutal from beginning to end, this clear commentary on the abhorrent treatment of women will make your blood boil. Yet, there is the reminder that we are stronger together, that we can create change and tear apart the status quo working as a team. Women are a force to be reckoned with!
