U is for Undertow
U is for Undertow: A Kinsey Millhone Novel | Sue Grafton
31 posts | 49 read | 11 to read
Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable. Even more so when Kinsey Millhones only lead is a grown man dredging up a repressed childhood memoryof something that may never have happened Looking solemn, Michael Sutton arrives in Kinseys office with a story: When he was six, he wandered into the woods and saw two men digging a hole. They claimed they were pirates, looking for treasure. Now, the long-forgotten incident has come back to himand he is convinced that he witnessed the burial of a kidnapped child. Kinsey has little to go on. Sutton doesnt even know where he was that dayand, she soon discovers, he has a history of what might generously be called an active imagination. Despite her doubts, Kinsey sets out to locate the so-called burial site. And whats found there pulls her into a current of deceit stretching back more than twenty years

The_Penniless_Author @CBee Laid back, almost to the point of being comatose. I love not traveling and avoiding a lot of the holiday stress, but this year may have been a little too quiet. At least we got together with friends for NYE. How was yours? 1y
CBee @The_Penniless_Author fairly quiet, but not without a few work hiccups here and there (we run a pet sitting business and therefore work holidays). I don‘t particularly care for the holidays so honestly I was kinda glad it was over 🫣 1y

With a lot of characters and a couple timelines this one could get a little confusing. I loved the story though! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I think I‘m going to have a little more reading time this week so my ambition for my #weeklyforecast is kind of high.

I only have 18 minutes left in U is for Undertow so will definitely be starting TGOG.

Still 2/3 to go in #murdertrending but it‘s a fast paced read. I‘m sure I will knock out the 2 volumes of Giant Days and the children‘s book too. I think I can also read the Rice and maybe get started on the Stedman. 🤞🏻

Bookzombie @Cinfhen That‘s great! It‘s one that has been on my shelf for a bit. 4y

I‘m a little late with my #bookreport due to my husband being a distraction (I mean this in a loving and funny way!).

📖I finished The Bus On Thursday. It was weird, but a pick.
🎧I‘m 67% through my reread of the tagged book. I have completely forgotten what exactly happens in this one.
📖I‘m a third of the way through #murdertrending and wondering if I have something figured out already. I really like it so far.
🎧TGOG is still on deck.

Cinfhen I‘ve just added GoDs to my que ~ maybe I‘ll start it later this week too 4y

This series is always a great palate cleanser for me. The audiobooks are excellent and each new mystery gives us a little more info on Kinsey‘s background. A random memory of “pirates” leads a man to hire Kinsey to try and solve a cold case of a kidnapped little girl. The hippie couple were obnoxious, but it was interesting to switch to different points of view and time periods in the story. I loved learning more about the aunt who raised Kinsey.

Sue Grafton never disappoints! What I liked about this one was jumping back and forth between different characters' perspectives (which I believe she did in S is for Silence too). Also, after finishing the book, I had to scroll back through my Litsy to see if I had actually posted about this before, as I remembered just enough of the plot and characters to make me think I had read this recently. 😅

It should come as no surprise that I would have another Sue Grafton reread in my queue. 🙂 (and yes, that's my duvet cover. I read before going to bed).

BookaholicNatty I haven‘t read this one but I have a few of them on my tbr. I want to start with A and work my way thru the entire series!.❤️ (edited) 6y
emilycoc @BookaholicNatty this is one of my favourite series! Can't recommend it enough. 6y
BookaholicNatty @emilycoc did you read all of them starting with a? 6y
emilycoc @BookaholicNatty I honestly can't remember! I started the series with A about 15 years ago, and read as many as the public library had on its shelves. I kind of forgot about it when I started university but a few years ago, I got reacquainted when I bought one of the books from the middle of the series at a yard sale - P, maybe. So I decided to (re)read them all. I'm sure I've missed a few in the middle from the time I started until now. 6y

My kobo stats are looking quite impressive! Enjoying the last few books of the Sue Grafton series, definitely an improvement on the first twenty books. Onwards to V for #LitsyAtoZ - can't believe I'm almost done with the challenge!

Kinsey Millhone takes on a case involving two child abductions twenty years ago and finds out more about her own childhood. It was ok, dragged a little in parts. Rating: 3/5.

I love me some Kinsey Milhone! These mysteries are taught, fun, and make me wish I lived on the California coast in the 1980s. I love the narrator of the audio books, and almost always read them that way. Longer review at https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1352020226. Feel free to add me there too!

Starting up a new audiobook. It's been close to 25 years since I listened to the first Kinsey story. Every year or so I listen to a few more. Only a few to go. Love them!

Bookzombie I love them too! I also love the narrator. 😀🎧 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Bookzombie I think if I heard Judy Kaye on the street I would run up to her and yell, "Kinsey!" while throwing my arms around her. 8y

The 1st half of this novel was problematic for me as there were multiple plot lines, & I couldn't get invested in all the characters. I do love Kinsey! I listened to this, which may have impacted my opinion of the disjointed first half. I'll read more but in text rather than audio format. 3.5 ⭐️s

MyBookLife I've never listened to an audiobook. What is the differences between listening to and reading a book? What is it that makes you continue reading this series and not listening to it? 8y
Ms.Story I'm finding narratives more accessible through text rather than audio format. I think it may be bc I can more easily flip back to remind myself of characters, etc. Audio would prob work better for simpler, shorter works (for me anyway) 8y
Ms.Story @MyBookLife Also, I want to give this series another chance bc I really like the main character--it was the side characters in this novel that turned me off. The overall writing was good, so I'd like to see if a different plot interests me more 😊 8y

carys14 @MyBookLife I listen to more audiobooks than read print or ebooks since I have a long commute and spend a lot of time sitting at my son's swim practices. I also listen while I run. One of the downfalls is not being able to flip back to a previous section. 8y
carys14 I don't usually have many issues to listening to narratives especially of the narrator is really good but is also may be conditioned now since I hand been listening to most of my books for at least the last 3-4 years (maybe longer) 8y
carys14 I also tend to only listen to books that are less of the quick summer reads and that are not part of super long running series (with the exception of the Dresden Files which has an excellent narrator) 8y
carys14 @BrittanysBookshelf I read a good part of this series when it started. I am wanting to go back and reread them from the beginning at some point but I will probably just check the ebooks out from the library. 8y
ReadingOver50 Too bad. I read this and really enjoyed it. 8y

Current audiobook: Over halfway through & the multiple plot lines are finally coming together (around chapters 17/18), which is making it easier to listen to and more interesting.

LitHousewife Sometimes a lot of plot lines can make audiobooks harder to get into. I'm glad this one is coming together for you! 8y
ValerieAndBooks I've been a fan of Grafton since she started the series, back in the 80s. Some better than others but I always root for Kinsey-- she's so awesome! 8y
sisilia I like U; I think it's one of Grafton's best 😊 8y

New audiobook for morning strolls with the wee one. This is my first Grafton novel, and I'm hooked so far!!

BookJunkie429 I love these books! You should also start with A. 🙂 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage The early ones are so charming! 8y
Soscha I started reading grafton (mysteries in general, really) because my mother would buy them. She loved mysteries, particularly women mystery writers. Grafton was her favorite. She died last weekend and I'm so sorry she won't get to the last 2 books in the series (Y & Z). 8y
See All 9 Comments
Ms.Story @Soscha I'm so sorry about your mother. I hope you can read the last two in remembrance of the best times with her ❤️ 8y
Ms.Story @BookJunkie429 I'll definitely backtrack-- this was the first audio available from my library & needed something quick 😉 8y
Soscha If you decide to read the series let me know which ones you liked best. Grafton's quality is pretty consistent; I can't think of any that have truly disappointed. My personal favorites are "I" and "K". 8y
words10000 Good to know. Ive often wondered if her books would be a good read. Wasn't sure about the lettering system! 8y
JennaRoot How is the audio? I might give one a try 8y
Ms.Story @JennaRoot I'm not an audiobook expert as I haven't listened to many, but my first impression was that this one is nicely done-I'd recommend it! 8y
