Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise
Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise | Dan Gemeinhart
73 posts | 60 read | 67 to read
"Sometimes a story comes along that just plain makes you want to hug the world. The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise is Dan Gemeinhart's finest book yet -- and that's saying something. Your heart needs this joyful miracle of a book." -- Katherine Applegate, acclaimed author of The One and Only Ivan and WishtreeFive years. That's how long Coyote and her dad, Rodeo, have lived on the road in an old school bus, criss-crossing the nation. It's also how long ago Coyote lost her mom and two sisters in a car crash.Coyote hasn't been home in all that time, but when she learns that the park in her old neighborhood is being demolished--the very same park where she, her mom, and her sisters buried a treasured memory box--she devises an elaborate plan to get her dad to drive 3,600 miles back to Washington state in four days...without him realizing it.Along the way, they'll pick up a strange crew of misfit travelers. Lester has a lady love to meet. Salvador and his mom are looking to start over. Val needs a safe place to be herself. And then there's Gladys...Over the course of thousands of miles, Coyote will learn that going home can sometimes be the hardest journey of all...but that with friends by her side, she just might be able to turn her "once upon a time" into a "happily ever after."This title has common core connections.

This was the first book that came to mind when I saw this question. A beautiful story of a father & daughter traveling in a school bus. Their story, the stories of those they meet & the lessons learned are wonderfully written.

This is middle grade magic 🌟💫 A perfect, sweet, thoughtful, lovely look at found family and life and loss and grief and running from the things you don‘t want to face. It‘s not cheesy, it‘s not silly, it‘s just the absolute best kind of middle grade book. I loved it ❤️ (Thinking of using it as a read aloud or lit circle choice for my kiddos this year) #teachersoflitsy

This RF novel follows the journey of a daughter and father who have an anything but ordinary relationship. Along their journey they meet several people, who all have an impact on Coyote. This novel is great as a LC book, following the objectives of http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/literature-circle....

OliviaBuck EL strategy 2- promote cooperation (small groups) aligns with the LC. UDL 6.4- enhance capacity for monitoring progress aligns with students meeting with their LC each week to discuss the book. #ucflae3414sp21 3y

“The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise” by Dan Gemeinhart

Sunshine State Young Readers Award

Coyote and her free spirit of a father Rodeo journey across the country in their school bus home. Their journey is not only a physical one, but also an emotional roller coaster navigating loss, family, and relationships of the additional chosen family in the characters introduced to the traveling crew.

RF. LC. #ucflae3414sp21

DrSpalding Four are complete following the rubric while the other eight I assume are placeholders that you will go back and continue to add information. The four that are complete are well done. You made excellent choices! 3y
ToddSalerno http://www.mackidsschoolandlibrary.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/CoyoteTeachers...

I thoroughly enjoyed this story of Coyote and Rodeo‘s road trip lifestyle. It is very much a story of grief, good and bad ways to deal with it, and family. The characters in this story were also wonderful, including the cat and the goat.

This is also the reason I don‘t post book stats until the last few days of the year. Yesterday, on December 30, I finished one of my favorite #MiddleGrade reads of the year.

Author : Dan Gemeinhart
Genre: Realistic Fiction
The remarkable journey of Coyote Sunrise was a tear-jerker if there ever was one. This book takes you on a roller coaster ride and you never want to get off. This Realistic Fiction (RF) if just perfect for Independent reading (IR), students will quickly be hooked and won't be able to put the book down. There is a lot of talk about crossing the US map and going from one state to another it would be

LauraLeighn helpful to use UDL principle 3.3 (Guide information processing and visualization) by having a map on the board with pins on the cities that Rodeo and Coyote visit. This plays well with ESOL strategy 30. Encourage the use of diagrams and drawings as aids to identify concepts and seeing relationships. Possibly students can have their own personal maps that they can mark the road trip on as they go through the book. Once again I find myself on 4y
LauraLeighn Teaching Books where I find so many useful resources. There is an author interview, multiple lessons for the book, and vocabulary lists. https://www.teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?tid=61834 #ucflae3414SU20 4y
Emmaturtle3 Laura it was tear jerker for sure, I too loved this rollercoaster of a book as your know from our LC!!! I love how you mentioned that students can create their own personal maps what a fun and creative way for students to identify concepts and see relationships! Great post :) 4y
DrSpalding I am happy that I was not the only one to cry! Your resource with the author interview is quite helpful. I would share the interview with students that selected to read this book. I think it is an excellent option for literature circles and the idea of creating personal maps is an excellent extension activity. This is certainly one of my new favorites! 4y

Another tear induced read. The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise by Dan Gemeinhart is a RF novel about a girl who is trying to find her herself after loss. Coyote and her father live in a world of “once-upon-a-times“ and adventure, but it is not all that it seems. They are escaping a tragedy and loss like no other. They make friends along their journey that bring out the best traits in each character. #UCFLAE3414SU20

A 2019 Parents' Choice Award Gold Medal Winner
Winner of the 2019 CYBILS Award for Middle Grade Fiction
An Amazon Top 20 Children's Book of 2019
A Junior Library Guild Selection.
4y
Ameyer32 This book would be great for LC or RA. I think that ESOL strategy 2, promote cooperation, would best align with LC and RA for this reading as well as UDL 8.3 Foster collaboration and community. There are great resources and teacher guides for discussion at https://www.mackidsschoolandlibrary.com/teachers-guide-the-remarkable-journey-of... . 4y
DrSpalding Your resource from the publisher provides excellent discussion questions and after reading activities. This is one of my absolute new favorites! You taught me about some of the awards it has won. I agree it could work for read aloud or literature circles. 4y

Tears... so many tears!!! This RF novel by Dan Gemeinhart is guaranteed to make you call your entire family and tell them how much you love them. This story revolves around the life of a young girl and her father, who have been traveling for 5 years in their mobile home. Where are they traveling to? There is no destination... This book makes for the perfect LC because students can share this book using various roles! #ucflae3414su20

bsiqueira https://www.mackidsschoolandlibrary.com/teachers-guide-the-remarkable-journey-of... This website provides great discussion questions and activities that can be used during LC circles! It also gives a brief background story of the author and his journey. 4y
bsiqueira The UDL strategy that can be used is 8.3 “Foster collaboration and community” because this is actual what the book is all about! Followed by ESOL strategy #2 “Promote cooperation” when dividing the students into their groups. 4y
Viviannef Bianca I couldn‘t stop crying those last few chapters! This book is an amazing read for higher elementary readers! I would highly recommend this book to everyone! I agree that this book would work great for LC and your UDL and ESOL strategies align perfectly! 4y
DrSpalding I am glad it was not only me! 😭 I truly hope you will use this as an option for literature circles in your future classroom. It is a very current book and I hope the author writes more! Excellent resource included. (edited) 4y

This book is just as the title says it is, remarkable! The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise a RF novel by Dan Gemeinhart, is a heartwarming story about a 12-year-old girl (who goes by Coyote), her father (who she calls Rodeo) and their journey in the big yellow bus. The book takes place 5 years after Coyote‘s mother passed away and goes into detail of their journey all across the states and back to where they once called home. #ucflae3414su20

Emmaturtle3 I think this a great book for LCs, the students will be given their selected roles and will switch out after every few chapters. This book is perfect for upper elementary school aged students and I think they will really be able to connect to the text and maybe do some text to self connections and reflections based on the struggles coyote goes through. (edited) 4y
Emmaturtle3 ESOL strategy #2 can be implemented during Lit Circles when the students are in their small groups sharing and discussing the information they gathered from their personal reading. UDL 8.3 similar to ESOL strategy #2, the Lit Circles with this book promote collaboration and community among the students by them respectfully listening and sharing with one another. 4y
Emmaturtle3 This link: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.yayomg.com/the-remarkable-journey-of-coyote-sun... provides fun facts for the students to learn about the book and help them discover more about the characters! 4y
bsiqueira Emma, this book made me cry plenty. Using this book in a LC is a great way to have the students connect. Small group sharing is a wonderful ESOL. This book will definitely be added to my book collection. 4y
DrSpalding This is one of my new favorite books. You are certainly encouraging collaboration and a positive community through the use of literature circles in your classroom. There are so many engaging characters in the story, I believe students will be able to easily make those text to self connections that you mention. 4y

*The remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise* By Dan Gemeinhart. This MF book is one of this year‘s Newbery Award winner! This is a great LC book to engage students in thoughtful discussions about the events taking place. The story is about a young girl named Coyote who lives on a bus with her father. She gets some news that changes everything, and is determined to head back home. To find out how her journey ends, you‘re going to have to read it!

Viviannef UDL principle 8.3 Foster collaboration and community and ESOL strategy 16 Integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities. This is a great principle and strategy to use when students are working in groups and discussing/sharing their ideas about the book. 4y
Viviannef https://www.teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?tid=61834#Resources – This website provides great ways to use this book in the classroom recalling the events that took place in the story. It also provides resources about the author and sample pages to use in the classroom regarding a written story map activity. #ucflae3414su20 4y
DrSpalding Oops… While it seems somewhat fictitious or fanciful, this is not modern fantasy. This is realistic fiction. This book is a true mirror and window for children. Use this as a literature circle option in the future and the many resources that come along with it. 4y

Book 82
I listened to this juvenile fiction story about a 13 yo girl, Coyote, and her dad driving around the country in a school bus, evading the heartache caused by the death of the rest of their family. The main conflict requires the suspension of an inordinate amount of disbelief. I take the fact that I wanted to yell all the easier ways to a resolution a good sign that I was invested in the dynamic characters. A great book for a family.

This is a perfect book. It has everything: heart, smarts, and adventure! Everything came together, but in surprising ways that I did not see coming. Every character was unique and added a layer to an already interesting story, making it that much better. I loved the capacity for love, kindness, and overall goodness the story share in the wake of tragedy, but more importantly: in mundane every day moments. ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️

Overall i loved this story. I felt for Coyote, wanted to strangle Rodeo, and became best friends with Salvador and all the rest. This middle grade book feels like a saga worthy of Gone with the Wind or Centennial but with an eye to what would keep a young person entranced, and a page count short enough to not be daunting.

The_Real_Nani What is the #LMPBC group?! 5y
LibrarianRyan @The_Real_Nani The #LMPBC is the Litsy Markup Postal Book Club. There are 26 groups (one for every letter of the alphabet). Each group is a bit different. This is for Group M which is reading Middle Grade books. Each group has 4 people. Each person picks a book within the chosen category. Each month you read a book and then mail it to the next person in line. Month 5 you get your book back with all the notes, etc. These are nice because ⬇ 5y
LibrarianRyan they only last 4 months. Then you can choose new groups or new categories, or not to do it at all. Usually the first person “claims“ the group and puts up an idea of a plan. I usually do MG books, and added Graphic Novels (GN) this time around as well. The overall program is ran by @Suvata but each group runs pretty independently. This is my second round and I love it. If you look over the # you will see all kinds of groups. ⬇ 5y
LibrarianRyan Some groups are specific for mailing locations, some for the type of books etc. For example, at the far end of the alphabet are groups in the UK, AUS, etc. I know there is a creature feature group, literary group, and a classic group, this time around. 5y
The_Real_Nani @LibrarianRyan wow! Thanks!! 5y
