The Winter Sister
The Winter Sister | Megan Collins
In this spellbinding and suspenseful debut, a young woman haunted by the past returns home to care for her ailing mother and begins to dig deeper into her sister’s unsolved murder. Sixteen years ago, Sylvie’s sister Persephone never came home. Out too late with the boyfriend she was forbidden to see, Persephone was missing for three days before her body was found—and years later, her murder remains unsolved. In the present day, Sylvie returns home to care for her estranged mother, Annie, as she undergoes treatment for cancer. Prone to unexplained “Dark Days” even before Persephone’s death, Annie’s once-close bond with Sylvie dissolved in the weeks after their loss, making for an uncomfortable reunion all these years later. Worse, Persephone’s former boyfriend, Ben, is now a nurse at the cancer center where Annie is being treated. Sylvie’s always believed Ben was responsible for the murder—but she carries her own guilt about that night, guilt that traps her in the past while the world goes on around her. As she navigates the complicated relationship with her mother, Sylvie begins to uncover the secrets that fill their house—and what really happened the night Persephone died. As it turns out, the truth will set you free, once you can bear to look at it. The Winter Sister is a mesmerizing portrayal of the complex bond between sisters, between mothers and daughters alike, and forces us to ask ourselves—how well do we know the people we love most?

A surprisingly good read! It's a slow-burn, melancholic, haunting thriller/suspense story. I enjoyed the atmospheric writing!

This was just ok I'm not really sure how I feel about it. I didn't really like any of the characters. They just all seemed so blah. I really disliked a few of them. Have you read it? What did you think?

Sylvie returns home 16 years after her sister‘s murder to take care of her sick mother. Her mother that also turned to alcohol after the murder and no longer cared for Sylvie. We piece together the events that lead up to the murder. Nothing shocking or new but a good debut from this author. Entertaining enough to be called a pick for me.

This was a mediocre thriller. About 3/4 of the way through, I had narrowed down the killer to two characters and I was right. The first 50 or so pages may seem slow, but it builds up the suspense needed to keep you reading. It was an easy read and I read it in a day (had the day off).

Again, not my usual genre for our #AccidentalBookClub, but I really enjoyed this quick read. I predicted parts of it, but it was an enjoyable page-turner that was better written than #TheSilentPatient, our last #BOTM club pick. #Recommend

This tale of family secrets and sisterly bonds that reach even beyond the grave was a good palate cleanser after reading my last two books. It wasn‘t nearly as profound as my other #BOTM pick (A Woman Is No Man), but it was a satisfying and well-paced mystery on this rainy, gloomy Saturday

I‘m gonna say just ok for this one. It wasn‘t suspenseful, it didn‘t even feel like a slow burn with a build up to the final reveal. Nothing special for me really.

So much #heartache in my #BOTM! This is an engaging book from its very first pages! Told from Sylvie‘s perspective, she was only 14 when her sister Persephone disappeared- and now at 30, she has returned to her CT home and begins digging into the past... some of the plot is easier to see coming than others, but I couldn‘t tear myself away from this one! #LiteraryLove

Compelling writing style. Some of the characters were well-written, but one or two I didn‘t think were well-developed (I felt like Tom was particularly trope-y and there were parts of that characterization that were insensitive and stereotypical). I figured out the plot about 1/3 of the way through. I‘d pick up another book by this author—I just hope for a more creative storyline in future books. #botm #bookofthemonth #february

As someone who majored in classics, I‘m a sucker for a character named Persephone! As Sylvie makes sense of her sister‘s murder, she slowly makes sense of her entire childhood. The only downside I had with this book is that I recently read a story with a similar villain, so I was able to guess the ending a little early on. That‘s on me, though, so it‘s still a pick!

The Winter Sister was so good. I started it yesterday and finished it today.

When Slyvie was 13 her 17 year old sister went missing. Three days later she was found dead by strangulation. Slyvie's close relationship with her Mother fell apart after her sister's death. Sylvie left the area when she turned 18. Fast-forward 14 years and she's back home to tend to her dying mother. Will she find closure during the visit? #BOTM #sickday #wintermystery

I have a special shelf for my #BOTM books, and usually the only time they come without the logo on the spine is if they are extras. Is there a reason why this #bookofthemonth selection doesn‘t have the logo on the spine of the book?

Not that it makes a difference to me reading it, of course! I was just wondering if there is a reason for this?

TheLibrarian @Aswenson You have a point about the plastic but a lot of times, B&N used plastic air bubble packing to make sure it doesn‘t move around. They could wrap it like BOTM, which would save on plastic packaging. 5mo
