Cat's Cradle
Cat's Cradle | Kurt Jr. Vonnegut
Cat s Cradle is Kurt Vonnegut s satirical commentary on modern man and his madness. An apocalyptic tale of this planet s ultimate fate, it features a midget as the protagonist, a complete, original theology created by a calypso singer, and a vision of the future that is at once blackly fatalistic and hilariously funny. A book that left an indelible mark on an entire generation of readers, Cat s Cradle is one of the twentieth century s most important works and Vonnegut at his very best."

This is not one of my favorites by Vonnegut. Maybe I am not in the right frame of mind to read it...? The purpose of some of the characters was lost to me. I will always love his style of writing, it‘s fast and comical. The ending was good and brought the book together nicely. I will probably read it again to try to get a better understanding of the characters.

Loved this satirical book about the end of the world, brought on inadvertently by the children of one of the creators of the atom bomb, and a religion created by a Calypso singer.

This was my first Vonnegut. Boy was I disappointed! Definitely not what I expected.
This is supposed to be Sci-Fi, and that aspect is way underdeveloped.
Encountering derogatory content almost made me bail on it, but I persisted nonetheless, telling myself it was a short book —that actually took me an eternity to finish.
I did enjoy the commentary on religion –which remains relevant up to this date– so I‘ll give him one more chance.

“The puzzle is how to get Marines out of the mud...”

This quote is an example of how the world could end through ignorance, not evil. I had a lot of fun stitching together quotes from the book to hopefully show the folly of ‘ice-nine‘.

Please read the comments below for the full quote. Sorry it‘s so long. I spent too much time on it and thought it was so good, I had to include the whole thing.

#QuotsyJan19 | 5: #Ice

LiterRohde “The puzzle is how to get Marines out of the mud...There are several ways...in which certain liquids...can freeze...And suppose...that there were one form, which we will call ‘ice-nine‘...with a melting point of...one-hundred degrees Fahrenheit...[And] suppose...that one Marine had with him a tiny capsule containing a seed of ‘ice-nine‘... 11mo
LiterRohde If that Marine threw that seed into the nearest puddle...[it]...And all the muck...And the pools and the streams...[And] the rivers and lakes...And the oceans...They‘d freeze...And the United States Marines would rise from the swamp and march on!” 11mo

I love Vonnegut‘s dark sense of humor and resigned pessimism about the human race. Cat‘s Cradle is about the end of the world and Bokononism, the most accommodating religions ever. Many of the users on Litsy are probably members of my karass😀. I don‘t exactly know if it was published in #December1963 but it was at least published that year!

This was Vonnegut's satire upon the arms race post ww2 and the destruction of the world that nuclear weapons would cause by the discoveries of scientists. In ice nine a substance is created to make war easier by freezing anything it comes in contact with thus preventing solidiers struggling through mud instead the oceans freeze. Satire at its best.

I liked the book I guess. It's a strange one. Interesting aspects for me were the traditions of the island people and the pseudo-religion created to keep everyone busy. The narrative is a week plot at best. Its not a bad book. There are funny and satirical aspects to it, but not enough to make it a great story. I feel this is a book better to study and disseminate the meaning behind it, than to read for enjoyment. 6/10 Good enough to finish.
