Looking for Alaska | John Green
The award-winning, genre-defining debut from #1 bestselling author of The Fault in Our StarsWinner of the Michael L. Printz AwardLos Angeles Times Book Prize FinalistNew York Times bestsellerBefore. Miles Pudge Halter is done with his safe life at home. His whole life has been one big non-event, and his obsession with famous last words has only made him crave the Great Perhaps even more (Francois Rabelais, poet). He heads off to the sometimes crazy and anything-but-boring world of Culver Creek Boarding School, and his life becomes the opposite of safe. Because down the hall is Alaska Young. The gorgeous, clever, funny, sexy, self-destructive, screwed up, and utterly fascinating Alaska Young. She is an event unto herself. She pulls Pudge into her world, launches him into the Great Perhaps, and steals his heart. Then. . . .After. Nothing is ever the same.

I have never had a book understand and grasp onto how your life changes and the holes people leave. The very structure of the book shows into the pain lost after tragedy and how some things will never be the same

Grateful for a working stove after 2 months, and cooler weather in Michigan. @ozma.of.oz

1. Colleen Hoover - all her books bring me comfort and heartbreak.
2. Not a gratitude journal, but I do try to journal everyday.
3. Tagged book- it‘s been my favorite book for years, and I don‘t see that ever changing 🥰

ozma.of.oz John Green! Great choice! Thank you for sharing! 2w

Banned Books Week: Day 4!

This book won the ALA‘s prestigious Michael L. Printz Award, which is given annually to “the best book written for teens, based entirely on its literary merit.” 💕📚

Despite this however, it was banned in many places for its use of profanity and sexual content. Did you know that it was the most challenged book in 2015? 😲

This is a stirring story. It discusses so many issues that teenagers deal with, drugs, sex, love, friendship, bullying and so much more. But mostly the story is about how we come to terms with our own mortality. Great read! 4.5 ⭐ Thanks @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks for gifting me this book. Perfect choice and a fabulous story.

On this week's episode of the Unabridged Podcast, we're chatting about the pilot of the television adaptation of Looking for Alaska (available on Hulu!). We are big fans of John Green's work, and this pilot does a great job of capturing what we love about the book. We also share what we're each currently reading in our Bookish Check-in and talk exercise in our Give Me One.⠀

What are some of your favorite television adaptations of books you love?

i am simply not a john green fan because i think he is insufferably pretentious, but this is arguably his least pretentious book. even in moments when it starts to become pretentious he uses his own characters to snap out of it, which i enjoyed. overall not life changing like some people say but pretty good

mandarchy I almost spit out my red wine - laughing at the description. How can sour milk and rubbing alcohol be ambrosia? Is this some kind of Alaska thing? 9mo
MatchlessMarie @mandarchy 😂 Nah it‘s just a teenagers trying to hide alcohol from their school administrators thing. Alaska is a character in the book. Now that you mention it, there is a red wine quote in this book too. “I believe,” Dolores said, “that yer s‘posed to drink white with turkey, but—now I don‘t know ‘bout y‘all—but I don‘t s‘pose I give a shit.” (edited) 9mo

Oh, Alaska, there you are!

...This was a conversational book with face-paced intelligent, witty banter. It was fun to read until the day after arrived. Then it became John Green sad. I‘ve thrifted a small stack of his books but I need to stagger my teenage tragedies.

This has been in my TBR for so long and I wasn‘t in a rush to read it because I heard it‘s very similar to Paper Towns. But I‘m glad I did, I actually liked this one better! This coming-of-age story is both funny and sad, silly and deep. Quintessential John Green.

Wil Wheaton‘s narration was awesome, as usual.

Curiouser_and_curiouser I also recently read this book as well as Paper Towns. And yes, they do have a similar feel. I have The Fault In Our Stars on my shelf and that might be it of John Green for me. I think I needed to be much younger to thoroughly enjoy them. 9mo

So whenI read this book I loved it. It had such great dialogue between the characters and just it was such a great story. I was so happy to have Hulu do it great justice! I felt it was perfectly cast and I fell in love with these characters all over again :)

I will say I think I enjoyed this book more than Paper Towns. To me it seemed more reasonable to understand the “manic pixie dream girl” ideal. Alaska is depressed and manic at times. And Miles sees only from his point of view, his sadness, until his friends point out he is not the only one who lost someone they love. I guess it felt more realistic than Paper Towns. I always thought Paper Towns was a bit far fetched. Have you read this? Thoughts?

I can‘t say much about this book, because I don‘t want to ruin the twist for anyone who hasn‘t read it yet. I will say that the book is about Miles, a teenage boy who enrolls in boarding school in search of the “Great Perhaps.” He makes friends, falls in love, and is forced to navigate through the labyrinth of life and loss. This book was also made into a TV series on Hulu. Love the book; love the series so far. 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

A solid 4 stars! I definitely enjoyed Wil Wheaton's narration of the novel. I will admit, I have seen the Hulu adaptation, and while there are some differences I would say the show definitely brings more emotion than you get from the novel. That's the big screen for ya though. #bookspinbingo

John Green seems like a pretty cool guy. His podcast, "The Anthropocene Reviewed," is phenomenal. It was because of that podcast that I put some of his work on my TBR. This was my first John Green. And I really am pretty bummed to say that I did not like it very much. And this is the best one? Right? The one that won all the awards? Sigh.

TrishB I would say this one is probably seen as his best - well certainly by my daughter! 1y

Holy cow #litsylove member @ElizaMarie you are amazing!! I really have wanted to read Looking For Alaska! The self care package is extra kind of you! My first John Green. Not a very long book & I'm enjoying it so far. I can feel something serious is about to happen though, with the chapters counting down ominously.
I'm 2/3's through so the chapter I'm up to is called "1 Day Before", whereas the chapter at beginning of the book was called "127 Days Before". I've got a feeling I know what it is & was looking forward to reading more until my kids come to me with their books for bedtime. Later...

Crazeedi I love the chapter titles concept! 1y
