The Glass Castle: A Memoir | Jeannette Walls
post image
Mehso-so

At this point in the book, the family has just moved to Welch. Welch is where the father (Rex Walls) grew up and his family stills lives there. Welch is a hillbilly town full of judgemental people that our main character, Jeannette, feels like she does not belong in. Jeannette‘s distaste for not only Welch but the life that would follow if she stayed, sparks her motivation to get out and move to New York City.

annika.verge In New York City, Jeannette lives the life she could have only dreamed about as a child. If you like books that show unique family dynamics and leading yourself to a better life. The book is written is first person POV, specifically Jeannette‘s, as the pronouns ‘I‘ and ‘we‘ are used. 1y

The Glass Castle: A Memoir | Jeannette Walls
post image
Mehso-so

The Glass Castle follows the life of the Walls family. Told through one of the daughter‘s (Jeannette) POV, we see this dysfunctional but loving family live in many different places and the events that happened in these places. So far we have seen them live in Tucson, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Midland, Blythe, Battle Mountain, Phoenix and mostly recently Welch.

annika.verge If you like books that are heartbreaking and eye-opening then this is the book for you. A theme present in this novel is the idea of appearance vs. reality. This theme is shown when the dad talks about building the “Glass Castle” which instills hope in the family since they live in poverty for most of the book up to this point. They don‘t acknowledge their dire situation and rather live in this fantasy that includes the “Glass Castle”. 2y

Looking for Alaska | Green, John
post image
Pickpick

Looking for Alaska by John Green follows Miles, also known as Pudge, around his new life at Culver Creek boarding school. He meets many new people but one person seems to stand out more than the rest, this person being Alaska Young. Alaska is beautiful, unpredictable and mysterious. Miles is fascinated by her world and quickly becomes friends with her. But then a tragedy strikes and everything changes.

annika.verge I would recommend this book to those wanting a reflective and emotional read. This book is written in first person point of view as we get the thoughts of Miles and words like “I” and “we” are used. 2y

The Bell Jar | Sylvia Plath
post image
Pickpick

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath follows the life of the protagonist; Esther Greenwood. Esther is intelligent, beautiful and strong minded but she suffers from mental health issues. When Esther doesn‘t get into the writing program of her dreams, she begins a downward spiral. Her passion for wanting to be a poet has vanished, she can‘t read, eat or sleep. One thing leads to another and she ends up in an asylum.

annika.verge I would recommend this book to those wanting a mature, relatable, and interesting read that leaves you questioning. A theme present in this novel is the feeling of being trapped in life. Esther feels trapped in her own mind and doesn‘t see any hope in getting out which in turn drives her mad. 2y
