A Curse So Dark and Lonely
A Curse So Dark and Lonely | Brigid Kemmerer
In a lush, contemporary fantasy retelling of Beauty and the Beast, Brigid Kemmerer gives readers another compulsively readable romance perfect for fans of Marissa Meyer. Fall in love, break the curse. It once seemed so easy to Prince Rhen, the heir to Emberfall. Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year over and over, he knew he could be saved if a girl fell for him. But that was before he learned that at the end of each autumn, he would turn into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. That was before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope. Nothing has ever been easy for Harper. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother barely holding their family together while constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, she learned to be tough enough to survive. But when she tries to save someone else on the streets of Washington, DC, she's instead somehow sucked into Rhen's cursed world. Break the curse, save the kingdom. A prince? A monster? A curse? Harper doesn't know where she is or what to believe. But as she spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, she begins to understand what's at stake. And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall . . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his people from utter ruin.

Tonight I met Brigid Kemmerer, which was amazing! She has an awesome sense of humor & a great personality. My husband told us to say “mozzarella” or something weird like that when he took this picture. I believe you can see our confusion if you look deep into our eyes. Well, my eyes are barely open but still...

This really was such a great experience! This was the first time in my adult life that I‘ve met an author!

Scochrane26 I go to a lot of author events now. I started meeting more about 5 yrs ago after going to our KY book fair, & now watch out for signings around my area. 3d
Butterflyamore @Scochrane26 That‘s awesome! I‘ve tried to look into events but I‘ve never seen one for an author I‘m interested in here in my area. Hopefully I‘ll get to do more over time! 3d
Scochrane26 @Butterflyamore I guess I‘m fortunate in KY because we have some awesome KY authors (& a book fair each yr that they attend), & I have been more interested in their books in recent yrs. Wendell Berry, Kayla Rae Whitaker, Silas house, Andrew Shaffer, just to name a few. I still haven‘t gotten to meet Barbara kingsolver or bell hooks. 2d
Scochrane26 My local bookstore has also hosted some good authors, & I recently realized that a lot are hosted at the Cincy store, if I‘m willing to drive 2 hrs. Hoping you get to meet more authors that you love! (edited) 2d

I am blown away by this book. It takes the idea behind Beauty and the Beast and has a wonderfully unique twist to it.
I do not have enough good things to say about it.
Brigid Kemmerer is a fantastic story teller and I can't wait to read more of her books simply because of how much I loved this one.

My recently read/currently reading pile! The tagged book was pretty good, although some parts were a bit too cheesy for my taste. Overall, it was a neat take on Beauty and the Beast! On to Willa of the Wood & Dragonslayer!

I expected to enjoy this Beauty and the Beast retelling but I am still surprised by how much I adored it. Although it was close to 500 pages, the story moved quickly and was packed with so much depth and beauty. It is definitely another favorite for me in 2019.

I enjoyed this book but I'm not quite sure that I saw what has everyone so enraptured with it. It's a fun, modern retelling of an old story. It is well-written and easy to read. There is a lot of beautiful detail, so the first half of the book or so only spans a few days, which I really enjoyed. Looking forward to the next installment in the series, since things were certainly left wide open at the end!

I liked this retelling of Beauty and the Beast even if I didn't love it. The story sweeps you up, there's lots of meaningful glances and guarded secrets, and I devoured the last few chapters all while rolling my eyes at the teenage intensity of it all.

I am definitely enjoying this book so far. I think it is probably going to end up as a 4 or 5 star read for me. The story flows nicely, I love the distinct voices of the two first person narratives, the premise is a unique take on Beauty and the Beast, and I love Harper‘s tenacity! Yay for strong female characters!

And Delilah is a bit of a monster so she can relate to the story.

When I was young and I‘d wake with nightmares, my mother always used to say, All you have to do is think of me, and I‘ll appear in your dreams. I‘ll help you chase the nightmares away. This book is one of my favorite read of 2019.
I absolutely love this story. I like the romance, it's slow and it feels more real.
I have laugh a few times. From the beginning to the end this book has enchanted me into it's world.
It's the kind of story where the prince doesn't save the princess but it's the princess job to try to save the prince.

Something about this book just grabbed me from the first chapters with that gut "I'm going to love this" feeling, and it did not disappoint! I loved the mix of modern girl thrust into fantasy world, people genuinely trying to attone for past sins, banter and action, and heroine who knows she has physical limits but doesn't let that lessen the strength of her conviction and willingness to help others. It all just worked really well for me. ?

It started slow but once I got into it I couldn‘t put it down! I love fairytale retellings, so I had to give it a chance! There were a few aspects I would have changed, but I still loved it. At times Harper‘s attitude was a little too YA for me and the ending wasn‘t my favorite. The book had some awesome concepts, but I think they could have been executed a little better. I am looking forward to the sequel! If you love fairytales give it a try!

I love her contemporary ya fiction, so I thought I try her new fantasy/contemporary mashup. After all, it is a spin on Beauty and the Beast and who doesn‘t love that story? It took me a bit to get really into it, but then there was no looking back. I‘ll definitely keep reading this series!
